Abstract

The existence of Quranic exegesis journalism is a relatively interesting phenomenon. As media content, the field of tafsir is likely to adapt to media routine practices, social systems, and social institution forces wherein the media is produced. In the period 1970-1980, Indonesia’s economic planning and political system had been deeply committed to developmentalist and modernist in orientation, and required social forces, including media and religious institutions, to promote this national goal. This study aims to explore the influence of journalistic practices in shaping the tafsir of the Quran in three magazines in Indonesia published from 1970 to 1980, namely Ashri Magazine, Panji Masyarakat, and Suara Muhammadiyah. The result of the study illustrates that the tafsir of the Quran within observed Islamic magazines adapted to the logic of journalism. Over the course of the period, Islamic magazines carried out Quranic exegesis journalism by defining issues and discourses of developmentalism and modernity as part of policy and public agendas in order to gain legitimacy from the Indonesian Muslim community. Additionally, this study argues that the journalism of tic Quranic interpretation is one of the study fields of the tafsir of the Quran in Indonesia which is relatively unexplored throughout the ages.

Abstract

This paper delves into the distinctive significance and characteristics of Nawawi's linguistic thought within the Malay Muslim sphere, exploring their correlation with his broader Islamic paradigm. Utilizing the theoretical framework of knowledge production and authorship, the study reveals Nawawi's noteworthy contribution to Arabic linguistics in Indonesia. His comprehensive grasp of Islamic sciences infuses a unique discourse into the field, blending Arabic grammar intricacies with ethical and theological dimensions. Despite his profound expertise, Nawawi's impact on Indonesian Muslim society remains inadequately acknowledged. This oversight can be attributed to the prevailing curriculum in Indonesian pesantren, the influential presence of Arab-origin scholars, and restricted access to Nawawi's works. Unveiling this scholarly gap underscores the need for greater recognition of Nawawi's linguistic insights and their integration into the educational fabric of Islamic studies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Although Wahhabi institutions have neither grown rapidly nor attracted a significant number of followers in Indonesia, the spread of Wahhabist thoughts among Indonesian Muslims has outreached the institutions and their propagators. This study proves the argument by examining the rift among a Muslim community in the Eastern Java village of "Karang Mojo", in which Wahhabism penetrates into the lives of the villagers due to exposure to a Wahhabi television station "Rodja”. This Wahhabi televangelism TV channel typically broadcasts religious narratives that exclude and attack the culturally vibrant practices of Indonesian Islam that preserved the tolerance to the local cultures. No prior record was found of the presence of a Wahhabi propagator or institution in the remote village. However, currently, a Muslim group with heavy Wahhabist influence has emerged in the remote village through various channels including Rodja television (hence, the group is hereinafter referred to as Rodjai). Through a series of observations and interviews with a number of people from the various groups in the village, the study points out the powerful influence of Wahhabism that penetrates into not only the urban areas but also the rural villages of Indonesia. The previously-unified Muslim community in the village is now divided. The Rodjai group in the village is very aggressive in attacking the culturally-rich practices of traditional Indonesian Islam and condemning those practices as heretical and superstitious that deviate from the pure teachings of Islam.

Abstract

Tafsīr al-Qurānul Karim by Abdul Halim Hasan, Zainal Arifin Abbas and Abdurrahim Haitami who are known as Ulama Tiga Serangkai of Binjai is one of the less-studied Archipelago exegesis works. This could be related to the exegesis's scarcity, which is presently only found in private collections and a few libraries. This interpretation originated in 1937 at Madrasah al-‘Arabiyah, which is located in the Great Mosque of Binjai. Given that this exegesis was written during the transitional period of the Dutch colonial government, which was, incidentally, non-Muslim, and the period of the Indonesian state government, it is worth investigating how the mufassir views issues of inter-religious relations to the discourse of religious moderation. This study discovered that the mufassir's moderate views live in their commentary works through content analysis of their exegesis and data from interviews, observations, and documentation. The moderate viewpoints and discourses discovered are still useful for use in today's religious life.

Abstract

The era of Liberal Democracy (1950-1959) was a period of political dynamics in which Islamic political parties had a significant role at the time, such as the Masjumi Party and the Nahdlatul Ulama Party. However, in addition to political parties, newspaper is another medium used to promote Islam as a way of life. This article analyzes the column “Ruangan Agama” in the Indonesia Raya newspaper published between 1949 to 1959 in promoting Islam to the public. It is a non-partisan newspaper and not the official media of any party as well. The method used is qualitative and historical approach to get a comprehensive and complete picture of Islamic thought at that time. The findings illustrate that the rubric of the "Ruangan Agama" in Indonesia Raya has engaged a discussion of contextual religion by raising real issues that were relevant at that time through the engaged reflection of Muslim intellectuals. The issues raised by the “Ruangan Agama” rubric are corruption, poverty, abuse of power, and others. In short, the "Ruangan Agama" Indonesia Raya’s column is part of a renewed Islamic movement that reflects critically on the fate of Muslims within the nation-state.

Abstract

The article examines hate speech, particularly religious insults, and its implications in the case of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok, the former Governor of Jakarta. It underscores the complexity of regulating cyberspace expressions, especially on social media, and calls for clear legal regulations to prevent social conflict. It highlights the real-world impact of online hate speech and the role of linguistic analysis in addressing it. The analysis is in three stages. The first is a text and context analysis using the Discourse-Historical Approach (DHA), examining Ahok's speech within historical and discursive contexts. The second focuses on Indonesia's legal frameworks governing hate speech. The third analyzes the court proceedings in Ahok's hate speech case, using both micro and macro linguistic approaches. The article concludes with two main points; the need to analyze the intent behind hate speech and recommends a dual-dimension linguistic analysis model in judicial processes related to hate speech cases, including religious insults. By embedding this component within the legal criteria, it becomes possible to achieve a more holistic and equitable assessment of hate speech cases. Overall, the article provides a nuanced analysis of hate speech, its real-life implications in Ahok's case, and the need for refined legal and judicial approaches to address hate speech.

Abstract

Driven by strong political reforms in Indonesia, women's rights have become one of the nation's most prominent agendas. But Indonesia's women's equality agenda is running out of steam. The argument is that we have ignored the importance of Indonesian Islam, which informs and shapes the nation's 'habit of the heart'. So that the nation's efforts to entrench gender equality substantively, legally and culturally have been inefficient. With this argument, this paper emphasizes the importance of considering Indonesian Islam as a crystallization of local values that can strengthen women's rights in CEDAW, as has been proven. There is gender perspective in private legal products such as the Marriage Law and KHI (which intersect with culture and religion) and the development of expert opinions that use these arguments. This article presents examples of the use of Islamic customs and Indonesian culture to advance women's rights in the Indonesian context, even though in reality they are not fully CEDAW-compliant.

Abstract

Indonesia ranks third globally in Muslim fashion production, fostering optimism in its potential as a prominent center for the industry. This paper aims to analyse Indonesia's endeavours to establish itself as the worldwide hub for Muslim fashion through the use of national newspapers. A qualitative content analysis has been conducted using ‘directed approach’ through 200 domestic newspapers. Based on the research findings, it can be observed that, first, non-state media sources have assumed a more prominent position in disseminating information pertaining to this matter compared to the government-run media channels. Second, non-state actors place significant emphasis on the issue of Muslim fashion due to their awareness of the numerous possibilities presented by the Indonesian Muslim fashion sector. At last, the extensive coverage of Muslim fashion by lower-level actors compared to high-level officials suggests a significant impact on Indonesia's efforts to establish itself as a global center for Muslim fashion. While ministries play a crucial role in promoting economic growth, cultural preservation, and social inclusion through Muslim fashion, reduced attention from the president and vice president could inadvertently hinder the industry's growth potential, international competitiveness, and cultural significance.

Abstract

Departing from the reservation on the existence of sharia in Indonesia, especially in the area of criminal law, which leaves no room for its contribution in Indonesian law, Ibrahim Hosen (1917-2001), an Indonesian Muslim jurist who once served as mufti of fatwa assembly in the Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI), had spent his effort in boldly reinterpreting criminal verses of the Qur’an which for many are considered final and uninterpretable. This article is aimed at uncover and understand the methodological framework he used in reinterpreting criminal verses of the Qur’an and its contribution in the Indonesian criminal law. This study concludes that Hosen’s method is ta’aqquli (rational), revisiting the final and uninterpretable divine texts, and resorting to the concept of siyasa shar’iyya (policy compliant with shari’a). By doing so, it is feasible to implement any form of punishment as long as it realizes the goals and objectives of the law. Therefore, sharia will remain exist and it is not impossible that it will be integral part of the national law of Indonesia.

Abstract

The Hajj pilgrimage is a fundamental component of Islam and represents both societal harmony and profound spiritual value. This study delves into the rich tapestry of social and cultural dimensions surrounding the Hajj journey during the colonial era. The study examines four contemporary Indonesian novels that were published prior to the country’s independence: Tjerita Nyai Dasima (G. Francis, 1896), Hikayat Siti Mariah (Haji Mukti 1910-1912), Di Bawah Lindungan Kabah (Hamka, 1938), and Percobaan Setia (Suman Hs, 1931). These novels highlight the various motivations people have for making the sacred pilgrimage, such as the desire for forgiveness or the removal of sins, the desire to rise in social status, and the desire to identify as hajj pilgrims. The research also highlights the social and cultural facets of the hajj pilgrimage, beginning with the planning, implementation, and returning from the hajj experiences. Through examining the subtle social and cultural nuances present in these stories, this study aims to enhance our comprehension of the Hajj journey as a phenomenon that fundamentally alters society.
