Abstract

This article aims to investigate the ideology of progressive Islam of the Muhammadiyah Young Intellectuals Network (JIMM), a progressive wing within Muhammadiyah. This provides a systematic discussion of the construction of the JIMM’s ideology, its genealogy, and its current development. This is primarily based on the qualitative data purposively collected through participatory observation and interviews, conducted mainly during the 2023 JIMM Congress in Yogyakarta. By employing a sociology of knowledge approach, this article finds that the progressive idea of JIMM is deeply rooted in and has a coherence with Muhammadiyah, particularly in Ahmad Dahlan’s ideology of progressive Islam which combines religious liberalisation and social liberation as embodied in the Al-Ma’un Theology and the Alleviation of Public Misery. We argue that in its recent evolution, JIMM’s ideology of progressive Islam has responded to various contemporary issues, as demonstrated by its activists who have proposed to focus more on the advocacy for human rights, gender justice, religious harmony, universal access to education, environmental stewardship, and caderisation.

Abstract

This study delves into the spiritual lives of Indonesian female migrant workers in Taiwan. It uncovers how these workers actively engage in pengajian (Islamic study sessions) to address spiritual needs. The research question in this study is how do pengajian contribute to fulfilling spiritual needs, strengthening communication networks, and forming national identity for Indonesian women migrant workers in Taiwan. This research uses a qualitative approach with an online data collection method, involving in-depth interviews with the management of the pengajian and participatory observation of its activities of Indonesian women migrant workers in Taiwan. The research reveals that these gatherings facilitate everyday Islamic jurisprudence studies, sufism moral introspection, Quranic learning, and salawat recitations. Additionally, these sessions foster robust communication networks among workers, enhancing their information exchange, relationships, and discussions. In uncertain conditions, these gatherings provide ideological reinforcement, social engagement, and a sense of national identity. The study suggests potential future research avenues in education and political ideology of these migrant workers.

Abstract

This article examines the narrative identity of the Muslim community in Pegayaman Village, located in Sukasada District, Buleleng Regency, Bali Province. As the oldest Muslim community on the predominantly Hindu island of Bali, the people of Pegayaman Village possess unique characteristics compared to other Muslim communities on the island. These include the tradition of combining Balinese and Arabic names for their descendants, the use of Arabic books translated into Balinese in daily life, and various forms of acculturation between Balinese traditions and Islamic teachings. These unique features suggest a dual identity for the Pegayaman community, representing themselves as both Balinese and Muslim. The theoretical framework for this study is Paul Ricoeur's narrative identity theory, while the research approach employs a qualitative method using narrative analysis and literature review. The findings indicate that both historical and fictional narratives contribute to the formation of the Pegayaman community's narrative identity. Meanwhile, the idem and ipse identities, reflected in the culture, traditions, and character of the Pegayaman community, are rooted in both extralinguistic and linguistic dimensions. Moreover, the narrative identity of the Pegayaman community generates ethical, aesthetic, and political implications for its members.

Abstract

Muhammadiyah has historically played a significant role in bridging conflict through multicultural da’wah. Although the organization originated in Yogyakarta and was initially intended only for the local community, it has evolved into a national and global da‘wa movement that spans across ethnicities, including Chinese Indonesians. Literature discussing Muhammadiyah’s da‘wa is abundant, yet little is known about Muhammadiyah’s multicultural da‘wa and its impact on Chinese Muslim Indonesians. This study aims to reveal the historical role of Muhammadiyah in establishing multicultural da‘wa for Chinese Indonesians. Using a qualitative historical research method and an interdisciplinary approach, the findings illustrate that due to the encouragement of the chairman of the Muhammadiyah Central Executive, K. H. Ibrahim, Chinese Muslims propagated Islam to the people within their ethnicity, through the establishment of PITI. Further, Muhammadiyah’s da‘wa method inspired Chinese Indonesians to carry out da‘wa in a similar way. Chinese Indonesians who have converted to Islam preach Islam through the organization and da‘wa bil hal.

Abstract

This article highlights the influence of Islamism and identity politics on Indonesian younger generation in the post truth era by emphasizing on the role of information technology and social media in spreading those ideologies. The research uses mixed methods of combining quantitative analysis with qualitative analysis, in which data are collected though questionnaire and interviews with those Indonesian Muslim youths as well as employing content analysis of social media accounts, religious publication, and education background. The results indicate that social media plays major role among the youths in the spread of Islamism ideas, whereas social, economic, and political factors significantly influence the acceptance of those ideologies. In addition, the institutions of education and religion shape the awareness of the youths, but curriculum improvement is still needed to promote religious pluralism and national resilience. This article recommends the reinforcement of national identity and cultural pluralism, including education policy  which will withstand the intrusion of Islamism  and identity politics in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study focuses on presenting legal anomalies in the protection of ethnomathematical norms of customary marriage norms in Indonesian marriage law. Although various legal provisions appear to protect the existence of customary marriage norms, judge decisions related to disputes over customary marriage norms are proven indifferent to its existence. In this article, legal materials were collected by studying the provisions on the protection of marriage norms and several religious court decisions that rejected them. Normative legal research with a statutory and case approach are used in this research. The research found three main findings, namely: first, the provisions of marriage law in Indonesia recognize and protect the legitimacy of customary marriage including ethnomathematics norms; second, the rejection of ethnomathematical norms in marriage regulations stems from their lack of clear and explicit recognition within Indonesia's legal framework. The third finding of this research reveals that dismissing the existence of ethnomathematical norms conflicts with human rights principles, which are intended to safeguard the fundamental rights of every citizen. These findings indicate the need for legal reform to integrate customary marriage norms into the national legal system to ensure more comprehensive and effective protection of the citizen’s rights.

Abstract

Traditionally, da‘wa (Islamic preaching) has been conducted face-to-face in mosques or communities through sermons and personal interactions. However, the advent of digital technology has significantly transformed these practices. Digital da‘wa   facilitates the dissemination of religious messages via social media, websites, and mobile applications, allowing messages to transcend geographical boundaries. This study explores the perceptions and motivations of Tuan Guru in Lombok regarding the adaptation of digital da‘wa  . Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with Tuan Gurus in Lombok, supplemented by observations and documentation. The study identifies four themes reflecting Tuan Gurus’ perceptions of digital da‘wa  : general views, effectiveness, accessibility and interactive convenience, and content quality and delivery. Similarly, four themes emerged regarding their motivations: expanding the reach of da‘wa  , adapting to contemporary trends, fulfilling religious and moral obligations, and seeking economic opportunities. This research provides a robust empirical analysis, offering valuable insights for developing more effective and contextually relevant digital da‘wa   strategies in the modern era.

Abstract

Between 1965 and 1968, South Blitar as the “last defense” of Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) underwent military operation. In East Javanese’s memories, PKI members frequently clashed with members of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization prior to the 1965 coup, and led to thousands of deaths, mostly among PKI affiliates afterwards. For decades, both groups lived in silent grievance. From the mid-1980s, under NU leader Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), a new movement toward understanding and reconciliation emerged. This research examines how Syarikat, an informal NU youth network inspired by Gus Dur’s vision, facilitated cultural reconciliation in South Blitar without relying on formal NU structures. Based on oral histories and narrative analysis (2021–2024), the study highlights the role of religious legitimacy and moral authority in reshaping perceptions and building trust. The findings suggest that culturally grounded, empathetic dialogue rooted in shared spiritual values can heal historical divisions and promote social inclusion.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the religious expressions embedded in the local culture of the Pencak Macan among the coastal community of Gresik, East Java. The research method used in this study is qualitative research, employing an ethnographic approach combined with the study of cultural ecology in coastal communities. Data were collected through interviews, observations, document research, and focus group discussions. The informants were cultural practitioners of Pencak Macan from three sub-districts in the Gresik, namely Bungah, Sidayu, and Gresik districts. The results illustrate that Pencak Macan is a distinctive traditional procession for the coastal community of Gresik. It is a traditional art symbolizing the journey of life, particularly marriage. Featuring tigers as husbands, monkeys as wives, and Gondoruwo as conflict, it portrays the domestic trials needing patience and faith. This Gresik tradition, performed during bridal processions, emphasizes faith and piety, serving as a warning against succumbing to temptations that distort human nature.
