Abstract

This article discusses the responses and thoughts of Tuan Guru or the traditionalist ulama in Lombok on the waqf innovation proposed by ACT (Aksi Cepat Tanggap), which is an Islamic international social and philantropic organization that operates in Lombok. The main motives of the various responses is the emergence of alternative narration and thought in Lombok that relates to the new categorization of waqf which is not existent in the islamic traditional jurisprudence. Some ulama who still stick with the opinion of Shafii school of law who do not recognize the productive waqf turn to welcome to this innovation because the proposal of ACT is based on charity and welfare of Muslims. There are three arguments proposed by traditional ulama in Lombok behind their acceptance of productive waqf, namely the argument of flexibility which prioritizes the preservation of traditional jurisprudene. Still, this does not erase all reservation of this innovation. the second is social arguments which emphasizes the role of waqf in improving the quality of Muslims life in Lombok. the third is the practical  argument, in which the ACT program was not financially burdersome for the intstituion owned and run by the tuan guru of Lombok. This positive reception turns out to be the opinions of transnational Muslims in Lombok who in many instances oppose the thoughts and opinions of traditional Muslims as innovation, heresy and even infidelity. Thus, this productive waqf has become a meeting point of the two opposing groups amidst the numerous conflicting views.

Abstract

The same culture and political system do not always give birth to twin political faces. This article finds that there are different policy formulations from the same cultural background and political system. Through a comparative study in two regencies, Sumenep and Pamekasan, in Madura, East Java, this article presents the results of qualitative research which shows that the existence of the same religious culture and the same political system gave birth to different Islamic political policies. There is a tendency to formalize Islam in one area (Pamekasan) and strengthen the substantive side of Islamic teachings in another area (Sumenep). Cultural similarities that are based on values, beliefs, and orientations as the dominant factors that influence political behavior, as well as the similarity of the system that places democratic mechanisms as a determinant factor for the birth of political output, have resulted in different policy formulations.

Abstract

This article traces the history of Majelis Taklim groups in Indonesia since their emergence and reviews the groups’dynamics in the local Jambi region. Alongside the rise of Majelis Taklim, it details the advancement of women’s roles in the public sphere and their contributions to a functioning democracy. I argue that the role of Majelis Taklim groups has changed in recent decades, with the groups providing a vehicle for Muslim women’s interests and voices to be heard. In particular, women in Majelis Taklim groups are showing much more awareness of political issues compared to the past. Changes have occurred in wider Indonesian society, most significantly their participation in education since the 1960s. This is reflected in the gradual improvement in the Gender Equality Index and Human Development Index of Jambi in 2019 when compared to nearly a decade earlier in 2010, however, gender inequality issues, mainly regarding labor and political participation, are still strong.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the use of the Aboge calendar system in Jambi Sultanate manuscripts and analyze the historical context of the period. The research used the philological method to elaborate the manuscripts and then applied historical and astronomical approaches to study the texts. The study involved some 17th to 20th-century manuscripts of the Sultanate of Jambi that use colophons in the Aboge calendar style. Although some of the Aboge calendars in the manuscripts cannot be converted into the Hijri and Christian calendars, the analysis of the Aboge calendar in these manuscripts strengthens the argument related to the influence of Javanese Kingdom of Mataram on the Jambi Sultanate, as known in Jambi Sultanate history, both power and cultural relations. In contrast, the use of the Aboge calendar in Jambi also shows the relationship between the Jambi Sultanate with Aceh and West Sumatra, where some of the Aboge reflect Aceh and Tariqa Shattariya modifications.

Abstract

This article focuses on exploring factors behind the rising popularity of veiling during the 2000s. The surging fame of the women’s Muslim wear is stimulated by the changing trend within the political realm marked by the resurgence of political Islam. These alterations in the political milieu prompted corresponding adjustments in the government's stance towards Islam. Notably, there was a more accommodating approach reflected in policy reforms concerning religious matters. In addition, there are other factors that lead to the rising fame of veil among Indonesian Muslims including media, fashion as well as the celebrity factor. Media in all forms indeed play influential role in promoting the veil with songs, movies and magazines exposing the veil in a positive light. Interestingly, the songs and movies tend to use the encouragement rather obliging the veil; they ways used by the policy. Further usage by celebrity then lead to the extent where the veil becomes common. An interesting yet ironic fashion development turns out to be source for criticism as some of them deemed to be inappropriate. Still, the trend shows that veil has become common to the extent that the emergence of variety is inevitable.

Abstract

This article discusses two elements of the evolution of Sufism amongst young urbanites. First, it explores the dynamics of the youths who are actively involved in spiritual activities at cafés, councils, and pesantren in Yogyakarta. Second, it investigates their response to the religious formalism promoted by Salafist organizations. Such spirituality offers a means of enriching religious perspectives and discourses. At the same time, urban Sufism (as promoted by zikir groups, prayer groups, and pesantren) has been challenged by Islamic organizations that adhere to doctrines of Salafism/Wahhabism and transnational Islamism. This study employs a qualitative approach by collecting its data through observations and interviews with urban Sufis in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It finds that youths' opposition is not only to religious formalism produced by Salafists but also to formality and exclusivity known as brotherhoodism or tariqa (Sufi order) from Sufi itself. Their strict opposition to the dualism of religious formality provides them with an important means of critiquing the dominant strains of tasawwuf and religious schools (tariqa) while offering new religious dynamics.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of the hijab on women's personal security, body image, and cultural perceptions in Indonesian and Pakistani contexts. Twenty-three female participants, aged 15-50, who regularly wear the hijab, participated in semi-structured interviews selected through purposive sampling. Thematic analysis of the interviews highlighted the hijab's role in providing safety and protection, influenced by cultural norms and the Islamic principle of ‘Wajib’ (obligatory practice). Both Pakistani and Indonesian women perceived the hijab as enhancing beauty, modesty, and comfort, challenging stereotypes and empowering women. Indonesian participants reported encountering job-related challenges due to hijab requirements, while Pakistani women faced fewer such obstacles. Overall, the hijab was positively perceived in both societies, symbolizing religious devotion, personal choice, and cultural significance. This research addresses a significant gap by examining the hijab's influence on personal security and body image among Indonesian and Pakistani women, contributing valuable insights into lesser-known aspects of hijab perception.

Abstract

This study aims to provide an alternative insight into understanding Islamic populism. Previously, there has been a long debate about how to frame Islamic populism in Indonesia. The first approach tends to believe that Islamic populism is a product of economic inequality, while the second approach underlies the increasing use of religious identity to mobilize people. Considering both sides, this paper used critical review analysis to find out the gap amidst the existing literature. The result shows that, Islamic populism within the Indonesian context seems to be an emotional movement among especially urban Muslim middle class in that attempts to bring religion into line with dogmatic political preferences. They frustrated with existing Islamic political parties which they considered abandoning true Islamic agenda such as implementation of Islamic law and Islamic leadership so that they resorted to populism. This attitude has grown up recently, especially to 212 movement, “Aksi Bela Ulama” and “Aksi Bela Islam” to keep Islam as the majority.

Abstract

Despite the apparent egalitarian principles and language of the Qur’an, the use of speech level in the Madurese translation’s dialogue verses appears to reinforce social stratification, which has existed for a long in society. The current article seeks to map the typology of relationships underlying the use of speech level, its determinant factors and implications. To achieve this, a critical discourse analysis was employed, with the main source being one version of the Qur’anic Madurese translation published by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2018. Close reading of the verses to gather representative samples, coding, categorization mapping, analysis, and creative synthesis-making were all part of the analysis process. The findings suggest that there are two main types of relationship patterns: hierarchical and egalitarian. These patterns are influenced by factors such as social status, family connections, and the surrounding circumstances. The former focuses on the manifestation of cultural nuances in the translations of the verses, whereas the latter is primarily concerned with the impact on real-life social dynamics.
