Abstract

ABSTRACTIt has been a widespread belief that to be more successful readers, Indonesian EFL teachers are strongly suggested to inculcate a higher degree of self-regulation within their learners. Some researchers hold a strong belief that robust self-regulation construction will breed more proficient, well-organized, and autonomous L2 readers due to the presence of long-lasting reading learning endeavors. This present small-scale qualitative study was a further attempt to profoundly investigate Indonesian EFL teachers’ perspectives of self-regulation in reading. One major research problem was formulated in this study namely what are Indonesian EFL teachers’ specific perspectives toward the utilization of self-regulation in L2 reading activities? Responding to this proposed research problem, narrative inquiry manifested in 5 open-ended written narrative inquiry questions were addressed for 2 invited Indonesian EFL teachers graduating from English Education Master Study Program, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. The obtained research results highly prompted all EFL teachers to be more supportive reading learning facilitators by introducing their learners to self-regulation concepts to transfigure them to become more resilient, persistent, and competent target language readers. Keywords: self-regulation, EFL teachers’ perspectives, narrative inquiry

Abstract

Teachers’ assessment literacy is defined as teachers’ knowledge, conception, and skills in administering classroom assessment practices. By the excellent assessment literacy, teachers could maximize students’ learning outcomes. Concerning the essential roles of teachers’ assessment literacy in instructional activities, the present study describes EFL teachers’ assessment literacy in Badung Regency, Bali. The researcher utilizes a descriptive research design, in which the required data is collected from a questionnaire and interviews. Forty-two EFL teachers responded to the questionnaire containing thirty items and then analyzed statistically and descriptively. Four representative subjects are invited to the interviews to confirm and elaborate on how EFL teachers put their assessment literacy into practice in the following stages. The present study found that the general level of EFL teachers’ assessment literacy is fair. Teachers’ professional experience, motivation, professional development, and social are essential in improving their assessment knowledge and practices.

Abstract

The students in SMPN 1 Nglames had difficulties memorizing English vocabularies and their meaning, and the problem affects their motivation to follow the class. Thus, implementing the right strategy to teach vocabulary is needed to address the issues. Previous studies affirmed that semantic mapping becomes an effective strategy for teaching vocabulary; it helps students memorize, understand, and use vocabulary more quickly. Therefore, this study aimed at implementing a semantic mapping strategy to improve the eighth graders' vocabulary mastery at SMPN 1 Nglames in the academic year of 2019/2020. Classroom Action Research consisting of four steps; planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting was used. The implementation was conducted in two cycles since the criteria of success have not been achieved yet in cycle one. In cycle one, there were only 68% of students gained ten points on their vocabulary scores and only 60% actively engaged. However, in cycle two it improved. 88% students gained ten points on their vocabulary score, and 73% students were actively engaged during the implementation of semantic mapping. Therefore, it can be concluded that semantic mapping successfully improved the students' mastery of vocabulary and increased their involvement.

Abstract

The pilot study focuses on three issues: how to articulate the need for learning videos in the language course, how to design learning videos in the language course, and how to articulate the feasibility and practicality of learning videos in the language course at the Faculty of Letters, Muslim University of Indonesia. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. The findings of this study indicated that students required more engaging learning resources than books and presentation slides, one of which is a learning video packaged in animation to capture students' attention and motivate them to learn the content or material in the learning video. Language learning videos with material paragraphs are produced using the video animation concept, specifically whiteboard animation. This design was picked based on the animated video's attractiveness to the audience in order to pique their interest in the material or film after it is shown. The viability of learning videos as determined by validation results from media and material experts on newly designed Indonesian language learning films is extremely good. The video's form or presentation, as well as the content included inside, are adequate and sufficient to allow it to forward to the following stage, namely testing to ascertain the answers or replies of lecturers and students. The practicality of the learning videos, as determined by lecturers and students' reactions, is extremely good; there are no substantial barriers to lecturers and students using these learning videos.

Abstract

The main objective of this research is to discover the instructional design model (IDM) that used by the English lecturers in preparation to teach speaking skill specifically in English Department of Makassar Muhammadiyah University. The models are ADDIE, Kemp, and ASSURE model. In addition, the efficiency of the instructional design model application by lecturers is also demonstrated in this research by the students' speaking skill achievement data. This research used mix method design. The subject of the research were 1 lecturer and 29 students from English Department of Makassar Muhammadiyah University. The instruments used interview and questionnaire (for lecturer) and test as the instrument (for students’ speaking achievement). Result of the research demonstrated that the ADDIE Model was implemented 91% of the stages, then Kemp and ASSURE models were implemented 100%. Finally, the lecturer complete 96% of the stages from the three IDM models. Then, students' speaking skill achievement presents that 10.3% of students were in the very good category, 34.4% were in the good category, 48.3% were in the average category, and 0% of students were in the poor category. So, it can be concluded from the research that when the instructional design model was effectively implemented, students' speaking skills improved significantly. This is evidenced by the absence of students who were in the poor category.

Abstract

Digital technology has begun to permeate all spheres of society, including education, particularly higher education. This research is concerned with investigating the need for digital-based learning materials in the folklore course at the Faculty of Letters, Indonesian Muslim University. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach by gathering data through questionnaire. The samples consisted of 5 lecturers and 50 students with a total of 55 samples that were given a questionnaire to which they have given consent to participate. According to this study, among other findings, students were becoming tired with printed educational materials. Students could have a unique experience with digital teaching resources, which can aid both lecturers and students in learning. Using the application Focusky, digital teaching materials containing historical folklore elements could be produced as a learning material. Digital teaching materials designed as presentation media with animations and 3D transition effects that zoom in and out to capture the attention of students. Focusky for courses in folklore seemed to have a very high level of practicability. The design or presentation of digital teaching materials and the content included within them are enough and adequate for innovative learning. Furthermore, based on the responses of lecturers and students to the digital teaching materials, the practicality of Focusky was rated as very good, and there were no significant challenges for lecturers and students when utilizing digital teaching materials for the history of folklore in learning.

Abstract

Assessment become one of the essential part in the process of teaching and learning. The influence of good assessment practices may affect the students learning outcomes. The goal of this study was to find out how well English teachers in Tabanan, Bali, Indonesia were assessment literate. This research used a descriptive quantitative method which utilized purposive random sampling technique in determining the sample of this study. In obtaining the data, teachers’ assessment literacy questionnaire were used which contains 30 questions related to teachers’ assessment practices. Then, the data were analyzed using ideal mean score to determine the teacher assessment literacy level of each teacher. The result indicates that the level of English teachers’ assessment literacy in Tabanan regency was categorized as ‘fair’. In which, there were 44.4% English teachers got the ‘fair level, and 40% teachers in the level of ‘good’ out of 45 teachers who contribute to fill out the teacher assessment literacy questionnaire. Therefore, more efforts, willingness, and more practices to be able to improve the assessment literacy level of English teachers.

Abstract

Translation is critical for second language acquisition in an EFL setting, much more so for people who cannot speak or understand a foreign language. Additionally, translation can aid in the educational process, particularly for elementary, junior high, and high school students. Students who are capable of precise translation will be more receptive to global knowledge, will improve their skills, and will have an open mind. Then they may think creatively and generate fresh insights and ideas. The purpose of this study is to determine the translation ability of Indonesian junior high school students when it comes to translating English ads. The current study adopts a qualitative descriptive methodology. The samples consisted of 25 grade VIII students from SMP Negeri 21 Medan. The findings discovered eight methods discussed and analyzed by the researchers. The results indicated that users of the literal method were the method which was most widely used by students with 96% of students using this method, and second was the free method with 88% of users, the third was the addition method with 72%, while fourth was the omission method with 36%, fifth position was the paraphrase method, and in the sixth to the eighth method was the explication method, the generalization method, and the concretization method respectively with each use of 0% or none used by students. The result of the research shows that the use of the literal method is more dominantly used by students and is easier to understand by students, and for other methods there are still some that have not been studied by students. Therefore, students need to continuously improve their English-speaking skills and increase their vocabulary. In addition, students also needed to learn the translation method as an important guide in carrying out translation activities.

Abstract

Some previous studies have proven that the use of ICT for learning gives some benefits as well as challenges for promoting learning autonomy. Thus, this research is aimed at investigating graduate students’ perceptions and practices on the use of ICT for promoting learning autonomy during the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the opportunities and challenges. This research employed a case study of qualitative research design involving ten graduate students of a state university in Surabaya. The data of this research is collected through an online questionnaire. This research revealed that all graduate students involved in this research have been familiar with the term ‘ICT’ and ‘learning autonomy’ in general. Furthermore, they have positive perceptions on the use of ICT for promoting learning autonomy during the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, the technologies and applications that they utilize during the Covid-19 pandemic are Google apps, LMS (Learning Management System), Reference Management Software (RMS), electronic devices, etc. Then, they also experience some opportunities which are getting to know applications, websites, and tools to support their learning, providing up to date materials, articles, information, and resources or references for their learning, and helping them to communicate or interact with their teachers and classmates. Finally, the challenges that they experience are internet connection problem, unnecessary or unclear information & irrelevant contents that make them unfocused or distracted, and problem in operating the applications or devices.

Abstract

Oral story telling as an African tradition used in safeguarding and transferring values from one generation to another has come under serious threat as a result of the modernization and digitalization of the arts. These oral traditions, like folk stories, are sometimes told and performed under the moonlight games, but seem to be going extinct with the advent of digital platforms where children can watch only foreign content, thereby forgetting African didactic content which inculcates values in them. Using the performance of Rejected Blessing in a multimedia approach, this study sees the infusion of media elements as a catalyst in reinvigorating and sustaining African storytelling and also refreshing the interest of the theatre audience in watching live performances. The methodology of exploring the multimedia and the stage in presenting the play is the recommendation of this paper. This paper also recommends that the infusion of multimedia creates a new spice for children and theatre-goers who may have lost interest in African traditional stories due to the influence of new media. Finally, this study suggests more experimentation with multimedia in order to sustain the values of African storytelling.
