Abstract

This study discusses the dominant socio-economic and environmental risk factors for TB disease. The design of this study was a case-control study with 70 case samples and control with a contribution of n = 1. Variables from this study contacted personal, ventilation of the house, humidity, the temperature of the house, density of the house, kitchen, and family earnings. Multivariate data analysis uses multiple logistic regressions. The study notes that from 140 samples, 47% have basic education, and 30% are farmers. People who had a past of contact with TB cases were ten times more likely to contract TB than those who had no contacted (OR = 10.00; p 0.001). Personalities who live in poorly ventilated homes who have a risk of contracting TB are 2.2 times greater than those who live in homes with standard ventilation (OR = 2.20; p 0.018). The moisture increases the risk of TB by four times the low moisture (OR = 4.00; p = 0.001). Living in a house with a higher temperature of TB is 3.8 times higher than a lower temperature (OR = 3.80; p = 0.009). Living in a high population density of the house improves TB five times more than living in a lesser home (OR = 5.00; p 0.001). Kitchen gas enhances the risk of TB 2.5 times greater than gasless (OR = 2.50; p = 0.007). Low family earnings raise the risk of TB three times greater than high family earnings (OR = 3.00; p = 0.002). A past of contact, poorly ventilated homes, high humidity, hothouse temperature, population density, kitchen gas, and low family earnings, are risk factors for TB in Wonosobo, Central Java.

Abstract

PHC as a public service institution is obliged to comply with the public service standard regarding with the community participatory principle. This research aimed to describe the community satisfaction and participation level in the PHC planning. Descriptive qualitative with 14 informants from 4 PHC in districts of Semarang and Kudus. Data were collected by indepth interview and analyzed with content analysis. Communities are satisfied with the PHC service because of the good service and uncomplicated procedure, which has impact to increase the daily visits. This situation makes queue time longer and the fatigue level of the officer tends to decrease the satisfaction. Communities have been involved in the planning mechanism, although only limited to the situational analysis phase. The Health Office is expected to facilitate the addition of PHC personnel and PHC also have to fulfill the need of human resources through the plans that have been done.

Abstract

Micronutrients deficiency is prevalent among women in reproductive age, particularly in developing countries, including in Indonesia.  Small body size reflects a chronic deficiency of nutrients intake. Both of those problems may correlate each other and making maternal nutrition more complicated. Brides-to be are the most important group of women in reproductive age who require better recognition, because they will become mothers. This study was to describe inter-correlation among anthropometric indices which reflected the maternal body size and several indicators of micronutrient status. A cross sectional study was conducted in selected sub-districts of Probolinggo District, East Java Province year 2012. The samples size of 115 brides-to be were randomly selected from list of brides-to be in Sub-district Office of Religious Affair. The observed variables were body weight, height, body mass index (BMI), mid upper arms circumference (MUAC), micronutrients status including concentration of hemoglobin, serum ferritin, serum retinol and serum zinc. Pearson correlation test was used to analyze data using SPSS for Window version 13.0. Result showed that the average of body weight was 47,3 kg, average stature was 150,4 cm, BMI was 20, MUAC was 25,3 cm. The average of hemoglobin level was 12,4 g/dL, serum ferritin was 50,6 µg/L, serum retinol level was 1,06 µmol/L, and serum Zn level was 12,9 µmol/L. Statistical analisis showed significant correlation between the body weight and hemoglobin concentration (r =0,25, p = 0,01) and serum retinol (r = 0,21, p = 0,03); between BMI and hemoglobin concentration (r = 0,31, p = 0,00) and serum ferritin (r = 0,23, p = 0,03), and serum retinol (r = 0,21, p = 0,02); between MUAC and hemoglobin (r = 0,32, p = 0,00) and serum retinol (r = 0,24, p = 0,02);  between hemoglobin concentration and serum ferritin concentration (r = 0,30, p = 0,00). Stature did not correlate with any indicators of micronutrient. It implies that among the indices of body size, body weight and BMI as well as MUAC are important indicators relating to iron status, and vitamin A status, but not zinc status.

Abstract

One way to control blowflies is by using chemical pesticides; however, it causes negative effect to human, environment, and other organisms. One alternative effort is to apply garlic as insecticide and larvicide to control infestation. The study aimed to investigate the effect of garlic extract towards the mortality of blowfly’s larvae and effective concentrations using LC50 and LC90. Ten blowfly larvae were used for each of these concentrations: 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 4%, with negative control of 5 repetitions, observed every 6 hours within 2x24 hours. The Kruskal-Wallis test result showed a Sig value of 0.0010.05, while Spearman analysis found Sig value of 0.0010.025, which meant that there was a significant effect of increasing garlic extract concentration toward blowfly larvae mortality. Mann-Whitney test found Sig value of 0.0010.05. Probit analysis showed LC50 and LC90 values were at 2.701% and 5.498% concentrations. 4% concentration caused the most larvae mortality. It is suggested to use garlic liquid extract to control blowflies.
