Abstract

This study contributes to the existing literature on the phenomenon of lower valume of Profit-Loss Sharing (PLS)-based products offered by Islamic banks by comprehensively discussing and analyzing the issue from the internal, external, and regulation perspectives, taking the case of PT. Bank Aceh Syariah (BAS) in Indonesia. Using a grounded theory approach, this study interviews selected informants who are knowledgeable in Islamic economics, banking, and financial theories and practices, including experts, practitioners, customers, and regulators. Viewed from three aspects, namely: internal, external, and regulation, the study found that, from the internal aspect, the problem of the low volume of PLS-based financing products is caused by six factors, namely: high risk, lack of quality and quantity of human resources, complicated handling, lack of banking product innovation, asymmetric information, and lack of socialization. Meanwhile, from the external aspects, it is caused by three factors, namely: moral hazard, lack of community's knowledge of Islamic banking products, and low demand. Finally, from the aspect of the regulation, it is caused by a lack of supportive regulation. By tackling these issues, it is believed that the Islamic bank could offer more PLS-based products that finally contribute to the prosperity of the public.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and analyze the level of technical cost efficiency, technical systems and improvement strategies that need to be done for inefficient areas in 30 districts / cities in East Java Province. This study uses secondary data from 30 districts / cities in East Java Province. The variables used include APBD expenditure variables according to health function as input, variable total of puskesmas, posyandu, puskesmas medical personnel, and government hospitals as intermediate outputs, as well as  life expectancy, Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR),  Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), and Morbidity Rate variables as outcomes. The research method uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with the assumption of Variable Return to Scale (VRS) and input-oriented. The results obtained on average technical efficiency costs during 2012-2016 were only 26.67%, while for technical efficiency the system reached 53.34% which was already efficient so that there were indications of waste in the allocation of health spending and an improvement strategy based on potential improvement for the regions was needed. which is still inefficient so that the proportion of inputs and outputs can be efficient according to the needs in each of these regions.

Abstract

Within the framework of neo-classical analysis, each individual is assumed homogeneous. However, homogeneity assumption becomes incompatible when discussing human behavior. Latest literatures conclude that men and women allocated resources under their control in different ways systematically. This study was intended to see whether there is an increase in the household’s welfare if the head of household is a women and granted credit access to financial institutions. Women’s access to all financial services, is essential to allow them to benefit fully from economic opportunities. The data used came from the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) for two last waves (IFLS 2007 and 2014). Analyses were performed using fixed effect model to overcome the unobserved heterogeneity, especially in terms of the individual character. The results indicated that the credit received by the female head of households can significantly increase household income. These results support the policy of increasing women empowerment in order to improve family welfare.
