Abstract

This research was conducted to reveal and classify the social adaptation efforts made by the main character in the film "Subarishiki Sekai" by Miwa Nishikawa. This type of research is quantitative research with a literary sociological approach. The theory used is Robert K. Merton‘s typology of adaptation. Data is collected by the listening and record method. The stages of adaptation according to Merton there are five, namely conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism, and rebellion. The results showed that from the five stages of adaptation, Mikami only performed the following four stages: (1) conformity, changing the way you look, looking for job openings, buying the latest mobile phone, studying for a driving exam; (2) innovation, biting the stomach of a thug who locks an employee at night; (3) ritualism, not saving and laughing at Abe when other employees bullied and made fun of Abe; (4) Retreatism, go to Kyushu to isolate themselves when all Mikami’s efforts did not get the response he expected. The conclusion of this study is that social adaptation must be done by ex-convicts who want to blend back into society. In particular, the state and society must play a role and be present in helping ex-convicts to obtain jobs and re-mingle with society so that they do not return to illegal business or crime.

Abstract

Yankee, which is a group of delinquent juveniles in Japan makes the society tend to focus only on the bad things they do. However, one of the interesting things about Yankee is that they stick to the concept of shuudan ishiki – the concept of group awareness that has been upheld by Japanese society for a long time. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the representation of Yankee in “Gokusen: The Movie” and “Drop”, from the appearance, behavioral, and group consciousness aspects. The method used in this study was an in-depth observation of the data corpus, then the analysis was carried out with the descriptive analysis method. To analyze the data, the theory of Sociology of Literature by Wellek & Warren and the theory of Representation by Stuart Hall were used. The shuudan ishiki concept was also used to analyze the behavior of the characters. The results showed that the appearance and behavior of students who become Yankees deviate from the customs, regulations, and norms that are applied in society. Other than that, the Yankee group in each movie has a high group awareness, which is portrayed by the loyalty and solidarity among the group members.

Abstract

After succeeding in two battles against the Qing Dynasty, China in 1895 and the Russian Empire in 1905, the Japanese Empire established itself as a powerful nation in the Far East region. After the war ended, the Japanese Empire creates peace treaty with China or the Shimonoseki treaty and Russia or the Portsmouth treaty. All of the treaties touched on the issue of the Korean Peninsula, in which it is clear that the Japanese Empire was making serious efforts for Korean hegemony under the authority of the Japanese Empire. The purpose of this study is to describe the efforts of the Japanese Empire through several treaties that have been made to annex Korean Peninsula. This study used a historical research method consisting of four steps: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The result of this study shows that from 1904 or before the protectorate treaty was signed, the Japanese Empire had violated the Korean neutrality declaration. The protectorate treaty was an attempt by the Japanese Empire to control the international relations of Korea, and in fact that this treaty was not supported by Korea. Meanwhile, in 1910 the Japanese Empire annexed the Korean territory by placing its Governor-General in Korea.
