Abstract

This paper studies the effect of fundamental economic variables on real exchange rates in Asean-5. The fundamental economic variables are capital mobility, technological progress, terms of trade, opennes index and fiscal policy. The paper applies panel unit root test, panel cointegration test, and Engle-Yoo three-step for short run and long run equilibrium. The result indicates that purchasing power parity holds in the short run. The estimation of equilibrium real exchange rate equation suggests that the direction of the coefficients is in accordance with the theory. It also finds that capital inflow negatively influences equilibrium real exchange rates, and that technological progress affects real exchange rate.

Abstract

Indonesia is the fifth largest populated country in the world with abundance of labour supply. There are two types of analysis that can explain the phenomenon of labour supply, namely the income effect and substitution effect. The purpose of this study is to estimate the income effect and substitution effect of labour supply in Indonesia during 2005-2008. Using a panel data analysis technique, the results show that the income effect dominates the substitution effect in influencing the level of labour supply in Indonesia. This means that changes in labour income is more influential on a person's decision not to engage in the labour market. Keywords: Labour supply, income effect, substitution effect, panel dataJEL classification numbers: J01, J22, J29

Abstract

This research investigated demand for demand deposit in foreign exchange. Data used was panel data, which is combination from time series data and cross sectional data.Estimation method used was generalized least square (GLS) with polled regression, fixed effect (Covariance model) and random effect (Error model) models. Based on restricted F test and Lagrange Multiplier test (LM test), it is known that fixed effect model is the best model to explain demand for demand deposit in foreign exchange. It means that element of region (regency/municipality) effects model structure. Least Square Dummy Variable (LSDV) regression model by incorporating time element indicates that local autonomy event did not influence model structure. It is supported with Chow test indicating that the model is stable due to enforcement of Law No 22 and 25 of 1999.Keys Word: demand deposits in foreign exchange, panel data, fixed effect model

Abstract

This study aims at determining the impacts of economic policies on rice and welfare in Indonesia. It estimates a simultaneous equation model with two-stage least squares method, using secondarydata from 1979 until 2008. The simulation of partial policy will be a trade-off for the producers andconsumers of rice. The policy of the floor grain price is still needed to respond to the increasedproduction of rice. The paper suggests that if the input subsidy is taken out, it should be preferablyfollowed by the increase in output, and at least, the rising percentage should be in the same numberso that the policy will be better off. Keywords: Welfare, trade-off, better-off, simultaneous equation modelJEL classification numbers: Q13, Q18

Abstract

This paper attempts to explore to what extent the current regime has changed the investment attractiveness and illegal charges in doing business in Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY). We focus on five factors that lead to regional investment attractiveness, in particular institutional, social-political, regional economy, labor and productivity, and physical infrastructure factor. This paper combined KPPOD method to analyze investment attractiveness at regional level and Analytical Hierarchy Proccess (AHP) to examine the business climate in DIY. We find that noneconomic factor, rather than economic factor, constituted a key factor based on business perspective. The institutional factor is found as the most important factor, followed by physical infrastructure, and social political factor. Interestingly, business community perceived illegal charges persistanly high in DIY, in particular public service, court, and police. Therefore, we argue some suggested corrective actions based the surveys are badly needed for local governments in DIY. Key words: AHP, pungli, daya tarik investasi, peringkat, KPPOD
