Abstract

The inbalanced numbers of job seekers and the job available as well as the high percentage of corruption in Indonesia has encouraged the government to find solution.    Based on the values promoted by education of entrepreneurship, the government has shifted the Indonesian people from being ‘job seeker’ to ‘job maker’ and prevent corruption.  Whenever the society understand and hold or conduct the entrepreneurship, corruption will decline because the society has already self sufficient and do not rely on the government any more.  Higher education serve the tool for the government to grow and develop students’ character, therefore, this institution is targeted to produce new entrepreneurship. Copyright © 2013 by Al-Talim All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jt.v20i3.44

Abstract

The high frequency use of phone- cell and short message service has produced various forms of new words.  These words create such variation of language that needs to be interpreted.  This is so because the results of abbreviations tend to go beyond grafology, syntax, and may produce psycholinguistic impacts.  The fact that the creativity of the language users are very expressive and subjective it frequently breaks the linguistic aspects.  These inappropriate words which is caused by irregular abbreviation seems so serious that writing  instruction of Indonesian at school must be reconsidered.  The phenomenon suggests that one can easily find students’ writing which are not understood, there have been so many illogical sentences, and ineffective language.  Therefore, school teachers have to work hard to rearrange students’ activity so that their writing skills may achieve the appropriate level based on the patterns of effective sentences.Copyright © 2013 by Al-Talim All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jt.v20i3.45

Abstract

The role of listening skills in EFL learning is very crucial not only for academic purpose but also for daily communication.  In university level, especially at STKIP Abdi Pendidikan Payakumbuh, students are exposed to listening I until listening III. In academic year 2012-2013, however, students were taught through Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and TOEIC to upgrade their critical listening skills. After several treatment or actions, I found out that students’ listening skills improved from 61.2 (in the pretest) to 73.5 (post-test).  It seemed that both TOEIC and TOEFL exercise have attracted the students’ mind that in the second cycle their enthusiasm increased surprisingly.Copyright © 2013 by Al-Talim All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jt.v20i3.49

Abstract

Character education is a positive offer in the eradication of moral crises which particularly emerged in our students.  Therefore, the internalization of values of character education in the educational institution is a must.  As an Islamic education institution in Indonesia, the existence of Boarding school is considered to be able to develop values of character education which may be done through formal or non-formal curriculum.  This is so because since its early existence, Boarding school has delineated its distinctive feature which is different from the other common types of education.  Here, the implementation of character values have been integrated (within large portion) in the religious subjects.Copyright © 2013 by Al-Talim All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jt.v20i3.41

Abstract

Education system in Indonesia is often in the spotlight, not only through print and electronic media, but also through cyberspace. Education in Indonesia is often tarnished by rampant incidents that are not well done by the students, ranging from engaging Drugs, promiscuity, fighting, until the murder. The problem occurs not only due to the lack of control of the parents, but also from school. Therefore, today a lot of changes in our education system, one of them are Character Education. The character education teaches habitual ways of thinking and behavior that help learners to live and work together with families, communities, and countries and help them to make decisions that can be accounted for. Because the character is not formed instantaneously, but must be trained seriously, continuous and proportionate in order to achieve the ideal form of character.Copyright © 2013 by Al-Talim All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jt.v20i3.46

Abstract

The diversity of Indonesia is a national asset which has long been considered by the founders of this nation.  It is thought that being diversity is not a barrier to realize the unity of the Republic of Indonesia.  However, the current state of our nation building indicates that such a spirit has declined as conflicts among the tribes lead to unlawful acts which raise the issues of tribes, tradition or race, and religion.  Education as a tool to resolve problems either as a state or a nation.  As a multicultural country, Indonesia is striving to horizontal conflict which may break the unity.  Multicultural education is, therefore, expected to be able to resolve the national conflicts.Copyright © 2013 by Al-Talim All right reservedDOI: 10.15548/jt.v20i3.42
