Abstract

The aims of this classroom action research are to find out how can and how well the information gap improves the students’ speaking skill at one vocational high school in Pontianak.Tools of data collection were observation checklist table, field note and speaking test. The participants of this research were the students of the twelfth grade of one vocational high school in Pontianak who were selected purposively. The findings showed that the students’ speaking skill has been improved by using information gap technique where the students’ behavior during the treatment was changed that were reflected from their responses, creativities, and speaking performance. The students’ speaking test results showed that in the first cycle, the students’ mean score was 55.00, then in the second cycle became 60.62, and the last cycle it became 72.07. Based on these findings, English teacher should consider using this technique to improve students’ speaking skill.

Abstract

The purpose of the classroom action research was to find out the improvement of the students’ speaking skill after applying pyramid discussion at the tenth grade students of the senior high school in Kendawangan. The participants were 24 students at the tenth grade students of a senior high school in Kendawangan. Observation and measurement were used as the techniques for data collection.

Abstract

The purpose of the classroom action research is to find out the effectiveness of reciprocal teaching technique to improve the students’ reading comprehension. The participants of this research were 35 students of the eighth grade, class VIII-A at junior high school in Pontianak. The participants were chosen through purposive sampling, class eight was selected because they had had problem in reading comprehension since they were in grade seven. The data collecting technique of this research includes observation checklist and field note. They were covered in observation technique while reading test was covered in measurement technique. The findings showed that the students’ understanding in reading comprehension improved and this was proven by the result of reading test from each cycle, the first cycle mean score was 52.57, second cycle was 63.14, and the third cycle was 71.71. The last cycle means score was categorized as good. The improvements in students understanding indicates that reciprocal teaching technique is effective and applicable when it deals with students’ problem in reading recount text. For the teachers, this teaching technique can be a good alternative when they encounter problems in teaching reading.

Abstract

This research focuses on improving reading comprehension by using semantic mapping in pre-reading of the tenth grade students of one senior high school in Mempawah. There are some problems appeared in classroom while reading learning. The students have difficulties in reading comprehension. For that reason, the researcher conducted Classroom Action Research. The research was conducted in two cycles. It is followed by evaluation of a test. The finding showed that students’ reading comprehension of the tenth grade has improved. Then, the students’ responses to learning were positive. Their participation in cycle II has improved from cycle I and the teaching learning process was good. Semantic mapping is a good technique, which can be applied by the teacher in the classroom to improve the students’ reading comprehension.
