Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of five arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on the early growth of Alstonia scholaris (milkwood) seedlings.   The seedlings were inoculated with Glomus clarum Nicholson & Schenk, Gigaspora decipiens Hall & Abbott, Glomus sp. ACA Tulasne & Tulasne, Entrophospora sp. Ames & Scheneider,    and Glomus sp. ZEA Tulasne & Tulasne, and uninoculated (control) under greenhouse conditions. Percentage of AM colonization, plant growth, survival rate, mycorrhizal dependency (MD), shoot nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca),  and magnesium (Mg) concentrations were measured after 150 days. Survival rates were higher in the AM-colonized seedlings at 150 days after transplantation than those in the control seedlings. Mycorrhizal Dependency (MD) values were 80, 78, 79, 78 and 78% in A. scholaris inoculated with G. clarum, G. decipiens, Glomus sp. ACA, Entrophospora sp., and Glomus sp. ZEA, respectively. Shoot N, P, K, Ca and Mg content of the seedlings were increased by AM fungi as much as 82-86, 81-86, 81-86, 88-91 and 85-90%, respectively. The percentage of AM colonization of A. scholaris ranged from 64 to 91 %. Colonization by five AM fungi increased plant height, diameter, total fresh weight, total dry weight and total length root. Glomus clarum was more effective in improving nutrient content and plant growth of A. scholaris than G. decipiens, Entrophospora  sp., Glomus sp. ZEA and Glomus sp. ACA.   Total root length of A. scholaris ranged from 1,180 to 1,310 cm. The results suggest that AM fungi can accelerate the establishment of the seedling stocks of A. scholaris. This finding would contribute to the effort of establishing A. scholaris plantation.

Abstract

The second (2nd) and third (3rd) segment of  Ciliwung middle-stream watershed land use have changed drastically over the past two decades. The second (2nd) and third (3rd) segment of  Ciliwung middle-stream watershed land use have changed drastically over the past two decades. This paper analyses the land use change from 1989-2012 and its impact on decreasing carbon stock or increasing CO2 eq emission, as well as to establish projected Reference Level (RL) to 2020. Best RL projection was used to establish the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) in both segments. The land use changing from 1989-2012 indicated a reduction of  green space area by 2,575.57 ha whereas the non-green space area increased by 2,575.57 ha. These changes decreases the carbon stock by 26,900 ton C and released CO eq emission by about 98,723 ton CO2eq. Population growth, demand on land and land constraints were found to be the driving factors of  land use changes in this area. Reference Level 2020 was established based on business as usual (BAU) and forward looking (FL) scenarios. The projection showed that FL was the best scenario which estimated carbon storage at 217,610 ton C in 2020. Low carbon development strategy directed to the area of  green space added up to 20% carbon storage through the implementation of  the strategy based on green space and non-green space which covered the areas from protection, supervision, extension or awareness and law enforcement.

Abstract

The dynamic of 3-parties conflict of interests (investor, local people and government) in having actual income from the nature tourism park business in Indonesia became worse since a “very progressive” Government Regulation on Forestry Related Services Tariff (so called PP 12/2014) was issued. On one hand, everybody agrees to improve the 17 years old tariff regulation of PP 59/1998. On the other hand, the “unclear reason” of the new tariffs in PP 12/2014 has shocked many parties and created many difficulties while implemented. This paper studies visitors’ expenditures and their willingness to pay (WTP) for every recreation services scenario by using contingent valuation method (CVM) survey with open-ended eliciting questionnaire instrument. Regarding the characteristic of Gunung Pancar Forest Tourism Park (GPFTP) the method was used to justify a reasonable and eligible ticket pricing strategy at the GPFTP as a quasi-public recreation park. The survey has also specifically addressed the reasonable ticket-price that aligns with the financial assumption of investor's business plan and local people's economic activities. Results of the survey show that the continuum of visitors’ WTP is ranging from 3.4 times (as the response to scenario-1) up to 12.7 times (as the response to scenario-5) of the recent ticket price. The WTP of scenario-2, 3 and 4 are ranging from 4.7, 6.2 and 7.5 times, respectively. Furthermore, the results of Tobit Regression Analysis show that seven important variables are positively correlated, while six variables are negatively correlated with the WTP.

Abstract

This study was subjected to observe the possibility of  introducing specific foreign genes into Melia azedarach L., using Agrobacterium mediated transformation. Agrobacterium tumefaciens used in this study consisted of  strains of  EHA105 (vector plasmid pBIsGFP) and EHA105 (vector plasmid pBsGFP) to observe the possibility of introducing genes, and strains of EHA101 (vector plasmid pIG121-Hm) and LBA4404/ferritin (vector plasmid pBG-1) to observe the shoot organogenesis after genes transformation. Explants were collected from one cm in length excised stem of in-vitro plantlets. The results of the study showed that genetic transformations of M. azedarach could be potentially developed using Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains : EHA105 (pBIsGFP or pBsGFP), EHA101 (pGI121-Hm) and LBA4404/ferritin (pBG-1). The expression of  GFP (green fluorescence protein) signal worked successfully in this transformation  with 40% of transformation  rate for pBIsGFP and 20 % for pBsGFP.  The application of Agrobacterium strains of EHA101 (pIG121-Hm) and LBA4404/ferritin (pBG-1) which contained specific gene of kanamycin resistance and iron accumulation for plant growth improvement showed that adventitious shoot was well induced and elongated on the rate of 30 - 60 % of explants after genes transformation.

Abstract

Biological diversity can have significant contribution to reduce the build-up of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The trees in a forest stand form an essential part in the functioning of the terrestrial biosphere, especially in the carbon cycle. Yet tree photosynthesis is far less studied than crop photosynthesis for several reasons: the large number of species; difficulty in measuring photosynthesis of entire trees or of forest stands. This research aims to assess the contribution of biological diversity in carbon sequestration by analyzing the physiological characteristics (photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance, leaf chlorophyll content) of species native to tropical highland forest ecosystem of Mount Halimun-Salak National Park. The results showed that there was a wide range of variation of CO2 assimilation rate between tree species. The overall CO2 absorption rate ranged 1.1913 - 31.3875 µmolm-2 s-1, the highest rate was reached by Lithocarpus sp. (pasang parengpeng) (31.3875 µmolm-2 s-1)followed by Litsea noronhae(huru lumlum) (21.5750 µmolm-2 s-1), Saurauia nudiflora (kilebo) (11.8175 µmolm-2 s-1), Vernonia arborea (hamirung) (6.7125 µmolm-2 s-1) and Litsea.sp. (huru bodas) (6.2725 µmolm2 s-1). The rate of CO assimilation was affected by incident radiation and thus the photon flux (Q leaf). Correlation between CO assimilation and Q leaf under certain environmental condition was considerably high. Incident radiation and Q leaf also affected stomatal conductance and thus rate of transpiration.

Abstract

This study was conducted to explore the role of forestry sector in the economic system of Gunungkidul district. The Location Quotient (LQ) Analysis, Income Multiplier Effect Value, and Klassen Typology Analysis were employed to analyze the role of the forestry sector. The data were regional income of Gunungkidul district and Yogyakarta Province from 1993 to 2008, including the economic crisis period from 1997 to 1998. The result showed that forestry sector was an important sector in economic development of Gunungkidul district. LQ analysis indicated that forestry became a basic sector since pre-economic crisis period until post-economic crisis (1993 - 2008). Prior to the economic crisis, forestry sector generated the highest income multiplier effect value. However, the value dropped during and after the economic crisis. The economic crisis had an influence on the development pattern classification of forestry sector. Before economic crisis, forestry sector was classified as a developed sector (quadrant I) with the growth and shared to GDRP in Gunungkidul were higher than that in Yogyakarta Province. Meanwhile, since the economic crisis, forestry sector fell into the lower class as a stagnant sector.

Abstract

Temperature, rainfall and extreme weather have been indicated to affect the phenological patterns and forest productivity by shifting flowering and fruiting seasons and patterns, as well as crop production. Dipterocarpaceae are high value trees for both timber and non-timber forest products. This study aims to determine the response of phenological patterns of flowering and fruiting of Dipterocarps to climate variables. The study was conducted at Way Canguk Research Station of the Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park (BBSNP), Lampung during May-November 2012 by analyzing 14 years (1998-2012) of phenological data of Dipterocarps. The phenology surveys were carried out on monthly basis by estimating the percentage of flowering, fruiting (divided into 0-4 scoring) and the crop production. The results indicated that the phenological patterns of Dipterocarps in the area depicted major and minor patterns without mass-flowering time, different from what have been reported for Kalimantan or North Sumatra. Minor peak flowering season showed regular flowering, particularly during March to July every year. However, there were major flowering seasons in November 2002 (20.2%), September 2006 (21%), and October-November 2011 (20.3%). Average monthly fruit production showed a peak at the end of the dry season. Major flowering season seemed to coincide with the period of major El Nino events in November 2002 and September 2006, while others associated with La Nina. This study suggest that phenology and climate change may have implications in designing strategies for collection of seed materials to support the conservation and plantation programs of the Dipterocarps.

Abstract

The aim of this study were to identify and evaluate a condition in logged over area (LOA) after 5 years of reduced impact logging (RIL) implementation, and to asses how far recovery of former skidding road, damages in felled and yarded over area, and environmental condition had taken place. Results of this study was expected to provide inputs and to improve the RIL implementation guidance for sending   sustainable forest management. The results revealed that: (1)The covers of skidding road reached consecutively 2,641 m2  area (in block I), and 3,147 m2  area (in block II), as both marked by the growing of  bushes with coverage portions i.e. 84% and 80%, respectively; (2) The bush that grew on the former skidding road was regarded as pioneer vegetation; (3) The effect of cross drain on skidding road after logging was able to decrease erosion, and increase the recovery of the road condition; and (4) The healthy residual stand after 5 years logging by RIL showed that small diameter felled trees have resulted bigger residual stand damaged then big diameter or the percentage of healthy trees would be small.

Abstract

Limited transparency, accountability, and participation in policy formulation as well as implementation mainly based on economic considerations, all lead to failure to attain sustainable forest management (SFM).  Along with the reluctance of policy makers and lacking stakeholder capacity, less accurate data bases has also indicated a constraint in the development of appropriate action. The issues have been more complicated where they were correlated with economic imperatives, vested interest, ownership issues and the basic rights of indigenous communities living inside or adjacent the forest.  Forest destruction will be no end without securing customary  land and territorial rights.  To cope with these issues, the concept of fair governance has been promoted as an alternative to the traditional pattern of administration. In this paper, we propose a theoretical framework for policy development in order to attain SFM while respecting the rights of the adat people.  We show that adaptive governance, adaptive management, and participatory learning are strategic approaches in  governance reform to achieve sustainable forest management securing the customary rights and traditional land use of forest dependent people.
