Abstract

This study investigated the applicability of liquid medium in direct organogenesis of in-vitro culture of Melia azedarach L. Explants were collected from in-vitro multiplication originating from aseptically germinated seedling and from a 48 - years old mature tree. For adventitious shoot differentiation, 2 mm length of excised explants were cultured on liquid medium of MS (Murashige and Skoog's) basal medium supplemented with 28 combinations of hormone BAP (6-benzylaminopurine) and NAA (á- naphthaleneacetic acid). Differentiated shoots were subsequently cultured for shoot elongation in solid medium using MS basal medium supplemented with hormone BAP individually as well as in combinations with NAA. Finally, rooting culture were done using MS medium supplemented with IBA (3  indolebutyric acid). The results showed that the rate of shoot organogenesis of M. azedarach could be obtained through agitated liquid medium culture technique. The combination of hormone BAP 0.1-1 µM and NAA 0.01-0.1 µM are induced more adventitious shoot at a rate of 5 shoots / 2 mm length size of explants are transferring into rooting medium containing IBA 4.92 µM.

Abstract

Flowering intensity, insects visiting flowers and pollinators of S. album were determined in a study conducted in an ex-situ conservation plot, Watusipat, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta. Observations were undertaken during flowering season in 2009 and 2010, with an objective to determine the patterns of flowering and flower visiting insects of S. album in this population. In this study site, S. album typically flowers twice a year and reaches a peak on June and November. Flowers are visited by various insects, major in honey bees and ants. Santalum album is predominantly cross pollinated by insects however, low number of fruit set found in an open pollination. Variation of flowering intensity and the degree of self-incompatibility may influence the low number of fruit production in this species.

Abstract

Repeated forest fires highly impact on tree species composition. Forest planning requires information about the current condition of  species composition. This paper investigates the current tree composition of  natural regeneration after repeated forest fires,  regeneration process after repeated fires, and strategy of  secondary growth related to ecological restoration issues. Re-observation of  the 1.8 hectares permanent plot in Samboja Research Forest was conducted in 2011. All trees with diameters above 10 cm at breast height (DBH) were re-numbered and mapped. Herbarium specimen was collected for species identification. Number of  taxon was determined, Important Value Index was calculated, species trait of   light response was identified based on the references and dispersion index species was calculated. Results show after twenty eight years initial forest fire, 191 species naturally regenerated in the burnt area. Macaranga gigantea, a light demanding pioneer species of  Euphorbiaceae was the most dominant species, followed by Vernonia arborea belonging to Asteraceae. Both, M. gigantea and V. arborea had clumped distribution. Eight species identified survived from repeated fires, are Anthocephalus chinensis, Dipterocarpus cornutus, Diospyros borneensis, Eusideroxylon zwageri, Shorea ovalis, Syzygium borneensis, Pholidocarpus majadum and Vatica umbonata. All surviving species was distributed uniformly in the plot. Dominant pioneer species which has grown after repeated fires indicates that the current condition of  burnt forest is in the early succession. Protecting forest, assisting natural regeneration and monitoring dominant species are suggested as activities for the ecological restoration.

Abstract

Tropical peat-swamp forests are one of  the largest near-surface reserves of terrestrial organic carbon,  but rnany peat-swamp forest tree species decreased due over-exploitation, forest fire and conversion of natural forests into agricultural lands. Among those species are slow-growing Calophyllum  hoseiand Ploiarium  alternifolium, two species are good for construction of boats, furniture, house building and considerable attention from pharmacological viewpoint for human healthly. This study was aimed at understanding the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on early growth of  C. hosei and P.alternifoliumunder greenhouse condition. Seedlings of C. hosei and P.alternifoliumwere inoculated with AM fungi: Glomus clarum and Glomus aggregatum ,or uninoculated under greenhouse condition during 6 months. AM colonization,   plant growth,  survival rate and  nutrient  content  (P, Zn  and B) were measured. The percentage of C. hoseiand P.alternifolium ranged from 27-32% and 18-19%,  respectively. Both inoculated seedling species had greater plant  height, diameter, leaf number, shoot and root dry weight than control  seedlings.   Nutrient  content  of  inoculated  plants  were increased with AM colonization- Survival rates of  inoculated plants were higher (100%)  than those of  control plants (67%). The results suggested that inoculation of AM fungi could improve the early growth of C. hoseiand P.alternifolium grown in tropical peat-swamp forest therefore  this finding has greater potential impact if this innovative technology applied in field scales which are socially acceptable, commercially profitable and environmentally friendly.

Abstract

Raru (Shoreabalanocarpoides Sym) signifies one of the tree species that grows widespread in Sumatra Island.  Its bark portion is commonly used by local villagers as additional ingredient mixed to nira (sugar palm juice).  This addition is intended to make the juice more durable and also to enrich its taste after the juice is previously fermented to become traditional toddy beverage or the so-call “tuak”.  Local villagers believe that raru bark can reduce the level of blood sugar. As the relevance, the research was conducted to confirm that the extract from raru bark could afford its biological activities to inhibit alpha-glucosidase enzyme through its characterization, quantification, and isolation of its boactive compound. The extraction was performed using two methods (i.e.reflux and maceration techniques). Result revealed that the bark extract obtained from both techniques contained polyphenol compounds: flavonoid, saponin and tannin. Further, raru-bark extract from the reflux and maceration techniques could inhibit the action of alpha glucosidase enzymes on carbohydrate substrate ( i.e. p -nitrophenil-α-D-glucopyranose), at respectively 90.67% and 97.33%. Meanwhile, the inhibition activities afforded by the patented drug as a control (i.e. glucobay) equaled to 97.05%.  Assesment using UV-VIS spectroscopy, showed that the maximum spectrum of bioactive compound in the extract was at the wave length of 288.6 nm. Scrutiny using FTIR spectroscopy could identif y the presence of aromatic groups in the compound, containing -OH, C-H, C=C, C-O and C-H bond types. Analysis using GC-MS exhibited that the compound had molecular weight of 390 with molecular structure as C20H22O8. Ultimately, data analysis scrutiny with the aid of NMR judged the most plausible compound as bioactive was 4-Glucosyl-3, 4’, 5-trihydroxystilbene.

Abstract

Marrango tree (Azadirachta excelsa Jack.) has been introduced as a shade tree for coffee plantations that also produces valuable timber for construction and energy. This paper analyzed the financial aspect of an agroforestry system of marrango tree and coffee plantations, including observations of land management, costs and revenues, financial feasibility and sensitivity analysis. The study was conducted in Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province through field observations and interviews. Data was collected through direct observations, household surveys and in-depth interviews of several key actors to deepen the information and verify the collected data. Descriptive quantitative and financial analyses were employed to analyze the data. The results showed that the land management of marrango tree and coffee plant agroforestry in Rejang Lebong Regency was conducted in the traditional way. However, the agroforestry system of coffee plants and marrango tree was financially feasible at the level of 8% discounted rate (NPV = 76,250,582 IDR; BCR = 2.28 and IRR = 22%). This agroforestry system also has good resistance to changes in coffee price, coffee production and marrango tree price. The agroforestry system remained feasible although if coffee production declined by 50%, coffee price decreased up to 40%, and timber production declined up to 50%.  The changes in coffee production and price were the most influential factors on the feasibility of the agroforestry system. This agroforestry system is beneficial for the farmers. Hence, the local government should encourage the community to apply this system.

Abstract

The implementation of felling technique in logging companies is not yet carried out efficiently and appropriately. Study on the lowest possible felling technique (LPFf) is considered  to be important to  reduce residual  stand damage and felling cost. This study was carried out in a logging company in West Kalimantan in 2004. The aim of this study was to  determine the effect of LPFT on residual stand damage and felling cost. Data collected in this research include: residual stand damage, working time, timber  volume, productivity,  efficiency,  stump   height  and  felling cost.  Two categories  data were analyzed with  respect  to  their  possible  differences  using  T-test.    The  result  showed  that  the implementation   of  LPFT  was more advantage impact compared  to   that of  conventional felling technique, which is  indicated by the following factors:  (1)  Trees damage decreased 2.96%;  (2) Poles damage decreased 4.75%;  (3) Felling productivity decreased 17.16%; (4) Felling efficiency  increased approximately  3.2%;  (5) Felling cost increased about Rp 327.07 /  m'; and (6) in average stump height was 40.60 cm lower.

Abstract

Ebony (Diospyros sp.)  is a heavy hardwood that is  popularly known as blackwood. Diospyros consists of over 300 species spread throughout tropics area and about 100 species occur in Indonesia. Bisbul wood (Diospyros btancoi A.DC.) is one species of  streaked ebony that is locally known as 'buah mentega'.  The anatomical and physical properties of  bisbul  were studied to collect information  for wood identification  and to support appropriate use of the timber. Anatomical properties were studied from microtome sectioned samples, which have been coloured by safranin and mounted by entellan, while fiber dimensions  were studied from macerated samples.  Physical properties  of  bisbul wood studied include moisture content, density and percentage of volumetric shrinkage. Moisture content and density were studied from 20 x 20 x 20 mm samples based on wet and oven dry condition. Volumetric shrinkage was measured from dimension changes in radial, tangential and longitudinal shrinkage of 20 x 20 x 40 mm samples. The samples were measured in wet and oven dry conditions. The main anatomical characteristics to identify bisbul wood were black wood with pinkish streaked, heavy and very hard,  very fine texture, even, lustrous surface and glossy, distinct growth ring, small size of vessels, apotracheal parenchyma forming reticulate pattern. The average moisture content was 59.86 ± 2.84%,  the density average was 0.74 ± 0.04 gr/cm3  and volumetric shrinkage was 10.41±0.70%.   The higher the stem, the more moisture  content and the lower the density will be. Sapwood density was lower and had more moisture  content than heartwood. The black pinkish heavy wood, bisbul was recommended to be used for carvings, sculpture, souvenir and luxuryinterior products.

Abstract

The manufacturing of medium density fiberboard (MDF) using dry forming process for interior purpose requires extensive amount of thermo-setting urea formaldehyde (UF) adhesive. Unfortunately, this adhesive brings about formaldehyde emission from the resulting MDF, which was potentially harmful to human beings. The use of activated charcoal can be effective to reduce such emission. As the relevance, this research aimed to investigate the effect of activated charcoal addition to the MDF pulp on formaldehyde emission from the MDF. The fibers for the MDF-mat forming were the pulp procured from the MDF factory, resulting from the thermo-mechanical pulping (TMP) conducted on the mixed mangium wood (Acacia mangium) and rubber wood (Hevea brasiliensis) in 3:1 (w/w) proportion, respectively.  Such mixed TMP pulping was also done in the factor y.  The bonding between TMP pulp fiber during mat forming was assisted by the use of UF adhesive.  Prior to the MDF mat forming , was added to the resulting TMP pulp-fibers activated charcoal in  various amount, 2%, 4% and 6% based on fiber mass as well as based on UF adhesive mass. The activated charcoal was prepared by carbonizing candle nut shell into charcoal followed by activation process using phosphate solution.  Meanwhile the forming of MDF mat employed air-dr y process. As the control, MDF forming with UF adhesive was performed without addition of activated charcoal. It turned out that the activated charcoal-added MDF exhibited effective reduction in formaldehyde emission and significant improvement in physical and mechanical properties, i.e. lower thickness swelling , and greater MOR , MOE and internal bond, compared to the control MDF. The use of activated charcoal at 4% based on the adhesive mass seemed to be the optimum amount.  Physical and mechanical properties of the activated charcoal added MDF could mostly meet the JIS specification.

Abstract

This paper  provides  several alternatives  agroforestry  and plantation   systems  to consider  for carbon  sequestration  purposes.   It is indicated  that multicropping  of  coffee multistrata  or fruit trees such as mango,  duku and durian with timber or food and vegetable crops  produces  more benefits financially and economically compared  to monoculture  of tree plantation  such as albizia. The  former  system is more attractive in terms  of  return  to labour  and land.  However,  the later system produce  more carbon  and low cost of  carbon,  which is more potential  from the  buyers point  of  view: So there  is a trade-off   from  supply  and  demand   side  for  choosing   the  best alternatives   system.   Implication   of  these  are as follows:  (i) amount   and  price  of  product   is becoming  a key factors in determining  whether  a system is more  feasible  for selling of  product or carbon  trade, and (ii) there is   a need to create incentives  system for land  owners/producers if carbon  trade is a priority.
