Abstract

Forest  degradations  have left vast amount  of damaged  and abandoned  lands in Indonesia.   In this paper, we present our approaches  in rehabilitation of adverse soils using functional  bacteria isolated from plant species of Indonesian tropical  rain forests. For these purposes,  we collected  bacteria  from various  bio-geo-climatically different forests and conducted bioassays to test these bacterial abilities in improving plant growth. Repeated seedling-based studies on Shorea spp., Alstonia scholaris, Acacia crassicarpa, and Agathis lorantifolia have revealed that many bacteria were able to promote plant growth at early stage in the nursery.  Various  plant responses towards  inoculations suggested that although  forest soils maintain  highly diverse and potent  bacteria,  it is necessary to select appropriate approaches to obtain optimum  benefits from these plant-bacteria interactions.  Our  ideas and futures  studies  for further  management  of these plant- bacteria interactions for biorehabilitation are also discussed.

Abstract

Important    carbon  storage  in a forest vegetation   includes  below  ground  carbon  storage  and above ground   carbon   storage.    Carbon   storage  under  the ground   is  higher  than  that  above  ground,   so that soils are critical both  as a source  and sink of  carbon.   The  main  objective  of  this research  is to examine the annual  changes  of  soil carbon   storage   from  year 2001   to year 2003 in the permanent   plots  of  an experimental   plantation    (new  plantation   established   in the  year 2001)  and in the  permanent    plots  of control   plot/baseline  (young  secondary  forest),  in Cianten  Experimental    Site, Bogor,  West Java.    Soil carbon content   at 0-30 cm depth   for 0 year old, 1  year old and 2 year old plantations   are 4.14- 9.35%, 4.08  8.83%  and 3.04-   7.61  %, respectively.    Soil carbon  content  at control  plot  for 2001,  2002 and 2003 are 1.86-5.75%,  2.32 - 5.79% and 2.05 - 4.84%,  respectively.    Bulk density   at 0-30 cm soil depth  for 0 year old,  1  year old, and 2 yea.r  old plantations   are 0.38 - 0.5  mg/ m,  0.38 - 0.52%  mg/ m3 and 0.32  - 0.5 mg/ m, respectively.    Bulk density  at control  plot  for 2001,  2002 and 2003 are 0.47 - 0.63  mg/m3,  0.43 -0.6 mg/m3  and 0.4 1- 0.55  mg/m3,  respectively.     The  cumulative   soil carbon   stock  of  Pinus  merkusii plantation   is somewhat   higher  than  that of  baseline in Cianten  Experimental   Site, Bogor, West Java.

Abstract

Sequence polymorphisms among and within four Acacia species,  A. aulacocarpa, A. auriculiformis, A. crassicarpa, and A. mangium, were investigated using four chloroplast DNA genes (atpA, petA, rbcL, and rpoA). The phylogenetic relationship among these species is discussed in light of the results of the sequence information. No intraspecific sequence variation was found in the four genes of the four species, and a conservative rate of mutation of the chloroplast DNA genes was also confirmed in the Acacia species. In the atpA and petA of the four genes, all four species possessed identical sequences, and no sequence variation was found among the four Acacia species. In the rbcL and rpoA genes, however, sequence polymorphisms were revealed among these species. Acacia aulacocarpa and A. crassicarpa shared an identical sequence, and A. auriculiformis and A. mangium also showed no sequence variation.  The fact that A. mangium and A. auriculiformis shared identical sequences as did A. aulacocarpa and A. crassicarpa indicated that the two respective species were extremely closely related. Although a putative natural hybrid of A. aulacocarpa and A. auriculiformis has been reported, our results suggested that natural hybridization should be further verified using molecular markers.

Abstract

Stigma  receptivity based on seed set and pollen  tubes growth  following controlled pollination of flowers  of different  ages was examined  in Melaleuca alternifolia. The stigma secretion during 10 days after anthesis and pollen viability under three different temperatures and five storage times were also observed. These series of research were undertaken because successful controlled pollination of M. alternifolia depends on the application of viable pollen to the receptive compatible  stigma. The objective of this research was therefore to determine the stigma receptivity and pollen viability of M. alternifolia. Results showed that the stigma receptivity began to develop  on day  one and finished  on day  seven after anthesis,  peak receptivity occurred from day three to day six. The stigma receptivity also coincides with the appearance of secretion in the stigma, occurring  from day three to day seven after anthesis. Therefore,  the time for pollination of M. alternifolia appeared to extend for  approximately 7 days after anthesis. Data for M. alternifolia showed that regardless of storage temperature, pollen  was still  viable  after 26 weeks  of storage;  results also demonstrated  that the lowest temperature  (-18oC) was the best regime for long term storage.

Abstract

Recent studies of  fast growing species grown in PT. Sari Bumi Kusuma, Central Kalimantan, show that based on their fiber dimensions there are five species, namely Endospermum diadenum, Dillenia spp., Adinandra dumosa, Adiandra sp., and Nauclea junghuhnii with good potential for pulp and paper production.  The fiber length of  those five wood species are was more than 2,200 µm on average. This paper studies the physical properties, fiber dimensions and their chemical contents to predict the paper and pulp quality. The result shows that all of  the species were classified in the medium to high density category. All species were classified into the first class quality for pulp and paper. Based on chemical contents, Dillenia sp. is the most suitable species due to its high value of  holocellulose and a-cellulose, low lignin content, and its fiber length is about 3,119 µm on average. A. dumosa also has good opportunities because it had the longest  fiber lengths (3,137 µm on average) and high value of  holocellulose, even though it has the highest lignin content. While Nuclea junghuhnii is  less suitable due to low values of  holocellulose and a-cellulose.

Abstract

Root-rots are known to be latent diseases that may be present in plants for an extended period without any noticeable expression of  symptoms above ground. Photosynthetic responses of Eucalyptus nitens saplings artificially inoculated with the root-rot pathogen, Armillaria luteobubalina were examined to characterize the initial stages of  root-rot infection. This paper studies three photosynthetic parameters, i.e. photosystem II yield (Fv/Fm), chlorophyll content and photosynthetic capacity (Amax) for two strains of  A. luteobubalina over a seven-month period. Root systems were either wounded or left intact before inoculation. A significant difference was observed in the Fv/Fm ratio between the uninoculated control and inoculated saplings. Photosystem II yield was considered the most sensitive parameter for the early detection of  root-rot disease. Chlorophyll content and Amax decreased for all trees, including controls, during the period of  the experiment, and most likely reflected host responses to seasonal change rather than treatment effects. Fungal re-isolations from symptomatic roots of  inoculated trees confirmed the presence of  A. luteobubalina. Findings from this preliminary trial indicated that there were detectable physiological changes associated with early infection of  root-rot. However, to detect more widespread physiological changes an experiment  of  longer duration is needed.

Abstract

The rubber  agroforests  (RAF)  of Indonesia provide  a dynamic interface  between natural  processes  of forest  regeneration and  human’s management   targeting  the harvesting  of latex  with  minimum investment  of time  and financial  resources.  The composition  and species richness  of higher  plants  across an intensification gradient from forest to monocultures of tree crops have been investigated  in six land use types (viz. secondary forest, RAF, rubber monoculture, oil palm plantation, cassava field and Imperata grassland)  in Bungo,  Jambi  Province,  Indonesia.  We emphasize  comparison of four different  strata  (understory, seedling,  sapling  and tree) of vegetation  between forest and RAF,  with  specific interest  in plant  dependence  on ectomycorrhiza fungi. Species richness  and species accumulation curves for seedling  and sapling  stages were similar  between forest and RAF,  but in the tree stratum  (trees > 10 cm dbh) selective thinning by farmers was evident in a reduction  of species diversity and an increase in the proportion of trees with edible parts. Very few trees dependent on ectomycorrhiza fungi were encountered  in the RAF. However, the relative distribution of early and late successional species as evident from the wood density distribution showed no difference between RAF and forest.

Abstract

Selective logging has been taking place in Papua for several decades. In contrast, very little is known about the stand structure in post-logged forest.  Hence, this paper investigates stand structures in logged-over area of tropical forest in South Papua. Four species were selected in three one-hectare permanent sample plots (PSPs): Vatica rassak, Syzygium sp, Litsea timoriana and Canarium asperum.  PSPs were located in the forest concession area of  PT. Tunas Sawaerma in Assiki, Boven Digul, in South Papua.  Data sets comprised measurements made in 2005 and 2012 consisting of  species, diameter at breast height (DBH), mortality and number of  tree of  each species.  Integral Projection Models (IPMs) were developed, taking into account mortality, growth, recruitment and fecundity.  Results show the pattern of  stand structures of  the four species were more or less similar, i.e. more individual trees were present in the small diameter classes than in the larger diameter classes.  The general pattern of  the individual distribution of  the four species is the typical reverse-J shape.  Syzygium sp. has a greater number of  individuals in the small diameter classes than the other three species.  Population growth rates (λ) are above one, indicating that the stand structures of  the population dynamics of  the four species are recuperating.  Conclusively, these results suggest that species composition and population structure in these logged-over forests are recovering increasingly.
