Abstract

The productivity of exotic species developed in pulpwood plantations in Indonesia (HTI-pulp) has been continuously decreasing.  On the other side, there is a possibility to develop several promising native tree species in peatland HTI-pulp plantations. However, less information is available on the performance of those native tree species for planting in peatland pulpwood plantation. This study evaluates the performances (survival rate, growth and yield) of three native trees [mahang (Macaranga pruinosa), skubung (Macaranga gigantea) and geronggang (Cratoxylum arborescens)] in drained peatland, in terms of suitability for pulpwood plantation. An experiment plot was established by planting three native tree species and krasikarpa (Acacia crassicarpa) in drained peatland at Pelalawan District, Riau. Survival, growth and yield variables were monitored frequently until 5.5 years after planting (YAP) and then were analyzed. Geronggang (survival rate = 80.0%) and mahang (survival rate = 65.6%) showed good survival rates at 5.5 YAP which were significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of krassikarpa (22.4%). Geronggang and mahang are relatively promising growth and yield in which height, diameter and yield increment until 5.5 YAP were 1.96 m/year and 2.31 m/year; 2.08 cm/year and 2.59 cm/year; 13.1 m3/ha/year and 21.4 m3/ha/year, respectively. Yet, those growths and yields were still significantly (p<0.05) lower than those of krasikarpa, probably due to unequal  seedling quality. These results indicated the potential of mahang and geronggang to be developed in peatland pulpwood plantations. However, tree improvement program is necessarily required for mahang and geronggang to initiate the development.

Abstract

Currently, clonal of forest tree is gaining importance due to the yield improvement and low variability in different wood characteristics. Hybrid trees from clonal forest are importantly characterized in term of wood quality for finding  suitable uses. Accordingly, three clones (HD3, K47, H4) of 8-year-old Acacia hybrid (Acacia mangium × A. auriculiformis) were evaluated for inter-clonal comparison of its wood quality by evaluating their physical and mechanical properties as per Indian Standards. All tree clones were studied at breast high including diameter, heartwood content, and physical and mechanic properties. The Dbh of all  three clones was around 30–35% and 60–70% greater than pure forms of A. auriculiformis and A. mangium of the same age, respectively. The volumetric shrinkage of all  three clones was found to vary from 7.8 to 8.6%. The low shrinkage values may be attributed to higher dimensional stability of the wood of these clones. The data obtained in green and air-dry conditions were used to calculate ‘suitability indices’ with respect to teak (Tectona grandis) which was taken as a reference wood for comparison in India. All the suitability indices that these clones were either comparable or slightly lower than those of pure forms of A. auriculiformis and A. mangium. Less inter-clonal variation was observed in most of the suitability indices. Though, all the three clones were exclusively grown for their use in pulp and paper industry, but the comparative suitability figures for different end uses indicate that these clones could also be used for certain non-structural applications such as tool handles, light packing cases, pallets and light furniture.

Abstract

The use of natural antioxidants for medicinal purposes deserves thorough attention for their efficacy and possibly adverse toxicity. This paper studies the antioxidant actions and toxicity effects of bark extracts. The study focuses on eleven tree species of Euphorbiaceae family. Initially, bark samples from those trees were extracted using ethanol. The acquired extracts were examined for peroxide values with iodometric method. The bark extracts were chemically screened for possible antioxidant-compound contents, i.e. polyphenols, flavonoids, and saponins; and followed by oxidation-reduction test to assess the extract ability in vitro to scavenge free radicals in their standard sources, i.e. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl; altogether to determine qualitatively which species origin from bark extracts afforded the most potential as antioxidants. Toxicity test was performed on those bark extracts to assess their safety on living creatures, particularly humans as tried on shrimp larvae by counting their death, using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test method. Results show that bark extracts of four plant species, i.e. Acalypha hispida Blume, Bischofia javanica Blume, Glochidion arboreum Blume and Sapium baccatum Roxb species afforded potentiality as antioxidants, because its peroxide value (POV) was lower than or somewhat above those of the positive control vitamin E (POV 89.45 μg/ml). However, bark extracts from Euphorbia antiquorum  L, Euphorbia hirta L, and Jatropha podagrica Hook (i.e. LC50 : 238.85; 228.11 & 194.51 μg/ml) were highly toxic, because their LC50’s value< 1000 μg/ml.

Abstract

Local communities have been using forest land area far before Industrial Forest Plantation (HTI) permit was granted. The overlapping land use among different users potentially leads to conflict. This paper studies conflict resolution creatively and collaboratively with forest management. Conflict resolution is based on the Creativity and Collaboration Action - Forest Management (CCA-FM) model on field exploration that created participation pattern of all parties in the vision of forestry science principles as the basis of policymaking. Convergent Parallel Mixed Method (CPMM) approaches with Rapid Land Tenure Assessment (RaTA) were used. Results show that claim of the community as the owner of the authority rights and dominance of the local elites, greatly affect the action situation. However, the policy options taken by the government towards policy outcomes do not tend to consider the field conditions. The CCA-FM model has been implemented in five villages. The community strongly supports the government to devolve the management rights to the community and to facilitate the transfer of knowledge, technology, market information, supporting all parties, and collaboration on business license management. Research results recommend the CCA-FM model could be a basis for building village self-reliance and improving the performance of the Forest Management Unit (FMU).

Abstract

Community Based Forest Management program through Pengelolaan Hutan Bersama Masyarakat (PHBM) scheme has been implemented in Perhutani forest in Java since 2001. The program has been developed to alleviate rural poverty and deforestation as well as to tackle illegal logging. However, there was very limited information and evaluation on activities of the program available especially in remote area/regencies, including Ciamis. This paper studies the socio-economic, geographical and perceptional factors influencing farmers decision to join PHBM program, farmers selection criteria for the crops used in the program, and farmer decision to allocate their time in the program. It also examines the costs and income related to the program and how the program land was allocated between different farmers groups and within the farmers groups as well as the perceptions of the state company’s (Perhutani) staff members on the program. Deductive approach was used with  quantitative and qualitative methods. Quantitative data were collected through questionnaires from 90 respondents at three farmer groups from 3 villages, 30 respondents of each group respectively. Cross tabulation and descriptive statistical analysis were used to analyse quantitative data. Qualitative data were collected through interviewing of 9 key informants, three informants of each farmer group respectively, and two Perhutani’s staff. Results showed that PHBM program contributed to about 26.9% to community’s monthly income. The program introduced benefit-sharing system and accommodated community initiatives. Perhutani’s support was illustrated by freedom of choice of community in selecting the sharing area (land allocated for farmer to manage) and the planted crops. Factor influencing farmers’ decision in selecting the sharing area was geographic conditions, in selecting the crops was farmer skills, and in allocating working time  was farmers’ priority.

Abstract

The rural communities living around the National Park are generally farmers. They are less empowered and classified as poor. This is due to the relatively low capacity of farmers. In order to be more empowered, the farmers need to improve their capacity. This study aimed to analyze the factors that directly and indirectly affect the capacity building of agroforestry farmers around the National Park. This study was conducted in Kuningan and Majalengka districts of West Java Province for four months, from July to October 2017. Sampling technique used was random sampling with cluster location was agroforestry Forest Farmer Group (FFG) in the buffer zone of Gunung Ciremai National Park. The sample size was 310 members of agroforestry Forest Farmer Group. The results showed that the capacity of agroforestry farmers around the National Park was low. This is due to the low level of formal education, farming experience, cosmopolitan level, and narrow farmland of farmers. It is also caused by low environmental support factors (economic accessibility, ecological conditions, FFG role) and low participation of farmers in agroforestry both economically and socially.

Abstract

Soil macro fauna is one of the bio indicators in determining the quality of the land. The total soil macro fauna is influenced by the climatice condition and land utilization pattern. Agroforestry is one of type land utilization that is expected to improve the soil fertility. Land utilization changing from monoculture into agroforestry is predicted to influence the soils macro fauna. This study is aims to find out the population of soil macro fauna before and after applying manglid agroforestry. The research was conducted in Cukangkawung, Tasikmalaya District, West Java Province. Sample of macro fauna was taken from non-productive land of tea plantations and one year after the land was planted by manglid + corn + peanut by using agroforestry. Samples were taken in Feb-March 2015 and once more in Feb-March 2016. The observation land area is 1 hectare that is divided into 1 m x 1 m - 16 observation plots that was placed randomly. In each plot, a hole of 30 cm in depth was made and the dug out soil was placed on the plastic container. The collected macro fauna was counted and placed into a bottle that was filled with 70% alcohol. The macro fauna identification was conducted in LIPI zoology laboratory. The research shows that the diversity indexes for Shanon and Margalef on manglid agroforestry are higher than on the ex tea land. Factors that influence the soil macro fauna diversity improvement is pH, low temperature of soil and high soil moisture. Soil macro fauna becomes organic decomposer in agroforestry for about 56,25% and 20% in non-productive land of tea plants.

Abstract

Perspective difference of users related to forest area utilization has caused tenurial conflicts, as well as, possible utilization conflicts. This study aimed to understand stakeholders’ interests and influences as exogenic factors that caused the non-optimal institutional performance. This study used an institutional diagnostic approach to understand how the situation and action arena is from inter-influencing institutional entities. Data collection used the convergent parallel mixed method (CPMM) approach, while analysis used the rapid land tenure assessment (RaTA) method. Further, this study used the Institutional Analysis Development (IAD) method to explain how the exogenic factors influence each other. The results showed that the characteristics of biophysical attributes, community attributes, as well as, rule in use were inter-influencing within the action arena. Besides, based on the post-prospective analysis result, policy decision opted by the government tend to not consider the community existence, who have been using the land for their livelihood. This situation has caused utilization conflicts between communities and concession holders. Thus, this study recommends: 1) the stakeholders to establish a communication forum for all parties to obtain clear information about forest utilization and to support institutional performance; 2) institutionalizing local community to govern forest utilization, and 3) determining management and concept of sustainable forest, as well as, policy making.

Abstract

Globally energy crisis is known as a new era’s biggest problem. The use of agricultural wastes into the form of briquettes are the best alternative option of renewable energy sources. This paper studies the possibility of utilizing agricultural wastes into briquetting production with high calorific value. Major wastes were sugarcane bagasse, coffee husk, wheat straw, peanut shells, rice husks, paddy straw, corn stalks, sunflower stalk, soybean husk, coir pitch, jute sticks, caster seed shells, mustard stalks, cotton stalks and tobacco wastes for energy in the form of briquettes biomass. Observations were taken from Department of Bioenergy, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), India of different raw materials and briquettes of those raw materials. Results show that there were very satisfactory results after evaluation. In general, calorific value briquettes is higher than those of raw materials.   Raw materials of agricultural wastes and forest residual wastes ranged from 1,200-3,000 Kcal/Kg and its calorific values are significantly higher in briquettes than raw materials. Raw material of rice husk produces 3,000 Kcal/kg and briquettes of rice husk produces 3200 Kcal/kg. Likewise differences were observed in all types of agricultural wastes. The input and output ratio ware observed as cost-effective and profitable in all parameters for the farmers. Briquetting production is the emerging, ecofriendly, cost effective and profitable technology for the use of agricultural residues. It may help farmers to improve its socio-economic status and proper reuses of agricultural wastes.

Abstract

Trema is one of tropical forest trees that has many advantages such as wood for building, pulp and charcoal, leaves for medicine and bark for dye material. The constrain of the development of this species is the difficulties of the seeds to germinate and the rapid deterioration of the seeds after being stored. Therefore, there should be a right method to solve the problems. The aim of the study is to determine the proper method of priming to enhance the viability and vigor of trema seeds after storage. Randomized Complete Design was employed in this trial by priming the seeds before and after storage. The treatments werepriming methods including: control (no priming), matriconditioning with ash, osmoconditioning by soaking of 5% H2O2, humidify with water and hydrated-dehydrated process. The observed parameters were thepercentages and speed of germination. The results showed that the treatment method of priming the best for this type of Trema, both before storage and after storage hydration is the treatment of dehydration. Before storage, can increase the value of germination percentage and speed of germination respectively 15% and 0.9% /Etmal. After the storage, treatment hydration dehydration can increase 17% germination and speed of germination of 1.25% / Etmal.
