Abstract

Percobaan keterawetan 95 jenis kayu telah dilakukan dengan proses sel penuh menggunakan bahan pengawet CCA (copper-chrome-arsenate). Contoh kayu kering udara ukuran 5 cm x 5 cm x 100 cm disiapkan dan kemudian diawetkan dengan menggunakan bahan pengawetan sebagai berikut: vakum awal selama 15 menit pada 500 mm Hg: tekanan hidraulik dipertahankan pada maksimum 10 atmosfir selama satu jam, kemudian vakum akhir selama 15 menit pada 500 mm Hg.Contoh kayu yang sudah diawetkan dengan CCA diuji retensi dan penetrasinya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya hubungan positif dan nyata antara retensi dan penetrasi. Kelas keterawetan kayu ditetapkan berdasarkan nilai penetrasi dan dibagi dalam empat kelas. Berdasarkan hasil penetapan nilai penetrasi dari 95 jenis kayu diperoleh sebaran penetrasi berturut-turut 65,25% termasuk kelas I dan Il (mudah dan sedang) dan 34,73% termasuk kelas Ill dan IV (sukar dan sangat sukar).

Abstract

The effect af  some treatments of  freshly cut Sumaura  pine logs (Pinus merkusii) on the rate of ambrosia  beetle attack  (Xylebarus sp.)  was observed. The results showed that:l . Most of the tested  logs were initially infested by the beetles about one week after felling.2.There was  no significant difference among the susceptibility of any sections of  the tree trumk,  whether they were teaken from  the bottom,  middle or top portions.3. Debarked logs were more  susceptible, at least in the first week. to the beetle attack.4. Keeping the logs in the shady areas. and  also sprinkling with water, may lengthen the period  of  Jog freshness, but it  also means praviding  suitable host  for  the beetles continuausly.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to apply remote sensing techniques to estimate sago potential.   The estimation  method  of sago potential  is a linear regression equation. Estimate  parameter from  aerial photo  scale of  1: 20000 is the crown  density  as dependent  variable  while sago soft  core (empulur)   volume as the in dependent  variable.                                                                                            .                                         The linear regression equation  of the sago potential  is Ŷ =  3.6731 X  +  147.43 with 0. 7313 coefficient  corelation.  Based  on the study  the linear regression equation  above appear to have reliable estimate  and proved  to be useful for  planning  of sago forest  management.

Abstract

Proses kembang susut berlangsung selama kadar air bambu belum mencapai kadar air keseimbangan (KAK) dengan lingkungannya.  Oleh karena itu pengetahuan tentang sifat kembang susut dan KAK penting diketahui untuk menjaga mutu produk.  Penelitian dilakukan pada bambu tali (Gigantochloa apus Kurts) umur 3, 4 dan 5 tahun yang diambil dari bagian pangkal, tengah dan ujung batang. Pengeringan menggunakan metode oven pada suhu + 60OC. Perlakuan kadar air untuk pengujian sifat kembang susut dan KAK adalah 0%, 6% dan 12%.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bambu tali umur 4 tahun secara fisik sudah masak tebang dan dimensinya relatif stabil. Pengeringan bambu tali sampai ke kadar air 6% menghasilkan KAK pada level sekitar 9%.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to study the effect of treatments on seed and pressing temperatures on candle nut oil properties. The treatments consisted of steaming, dry-frying and control. The candle nut seed having been treated was pressed at temperatures of 65and 135°c. The data obtained  were analysed by using fac.torial  design and the difference between means were tested with the LSD procedure, calculated with SAS program.Vie results showed that an increase in a pressing temperature caused a decrease in a peroxide number and an increase in an iod number. The  dry frying treatment on seed before pressing activities produced a few deterioration on candle nut oil, denoted by a high value of iod number and a small value of peroxide and saponification numbers.  Compared to a steaming treatment or a control, the dry frying  treatment gave a better quality on candle nut oil indicated by a higher value of  iod number. .

Abstract

Pengangkutan kayu berguna untuk mengantarkan kayu ke tempat tujuan pada waktu yang tepat secara kontinyu. Pengangkutan kayu melewati jalan darat di hutan tanaman biasanya dilakukan dengan menggunakan truk angkut. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui produktivitas, biaya, efisiensi waktu dan prestasi optimum pengangkutan kayu menggunakan lima truk di dua perusahaan hutan tanaman industri di Sumatera. Hasil yang diperoleh menunjukkan bahwa produktivitas pengangkutan kayu menggunakan truk jenis Volvo 380, Mitsubishi PS220/260, Hino PS260, Mercedes Benz 2631 dan Mitsubishi PS120/135 berturut-turut sebesar 582,508 m3km/jam; 465,058 m3km/jam, 459,660 m3km/jam; 309,540 m3km/jam dan 194,148 m3km/jam. Biaya pengangkutan kayu menggunakan truk Mitsubishi PS220/260, Hino PS260, Volvo 380, Mitsubishi PS120/135 dan Mercedes Benz 2631 berturut-turut sebesar Rp 585,165/m3.km; Rp 619,265/m3.km; Rp 949,630/m3.km; Rp 1.403,864/m3.km dan Rp 1.686,553/m3.km. Efisiensi waktu pengangkutan kayu menggunakan truk Mitsubishi PS120/135, Volvo 380, Mitsubishi PS220/260, Mercedes Benz 2631 dan Hino PS260 berturut-turut sebesar 87,42%; 79,26%; 77,92%.,76,69% dan 73,40%. Prestasi optimum pengangkutan kayu dicapai bila menggunakan truk merk Volvo 380 dan Mitsubishi 220/260.

Abstract

Terak (slag) merupakan limbah peleburan baja pada pabrik baja. Selama ini pemanfaatan terak masih belum maksimal, sampai sekarang digunakan sebagai bahan pengerasan jalan di lingkungan pabrik. Guna meningkatkan pemanfaatan bahan terak tersebut salah satu caranya adalah sebagai bahan campuran perekat semen dalam pembuatan papan wol kayu.Papan wol kayu dibuat dari kayu tusam Pinus merkusii berukuran 30 x 30 x 2,5 cm Kadar terak yang dipergunakan ada 2 macam yaitu 33% dan 100% dari berat semen. Perlakuan perendaman wol kayu tusam di dalam air dingin ada 2 macam yaitu selarna 24 jam dan 48 jam.Kerapatan papan wol kayu tusam tidak memenuhi syarat Standar Jerman. Sifat mekanis berupa pengurangan tebal dan keteguhan lentur papan wol kayu tusam hanya pada perlakuan kadar terak 33% dan wol kayu direndam selarna 48 jam yang memenuhi syarat Standar Jerman.Secara ekonomi penambahan terak sebanyak 33% dari semen dan perendaman wol kayu selarna 48 jam belum tentu dapat menurunkan biaya pembuatan papan wol kayu.

Abstract

The effects  of  bleaching  of sega rattan  (Calamus  caesius Bl) peel  by soaking  in the  hydrogen  peroxyde of  several  concentration  levels  (1 , 3,  5,  and  7 percent)  and  soaking  times  ( 1,  3,  and 5 hours)  on  rattan peel  quality   were studied  at  the  Forest  Products Research  and Development   Centre  Laboratory   in  Bogor.  Results  showed  that   the unblea- ched  rattan  peel  has the  brightness of  38.8  percent  and  the  tensile  strength  parallel to  grain  of  412.09  kg/cm2   while for the bleached  ones,  those  figures are 44. 74 percent  and 374.99  kg/cm2,   respectively.It  is found   that  bleaching  agent  concenlration   has a highly  significant  effect  on  both  brightness and tensile  strength parallel    to  grain.   The  brightness   (Y)   was significantly improved   with   the  increasing  of  bleaching  agent  concentrations (X)  which   can  be  expressed   by  the  regression  equation   of  Y  =  40.2365   + 1.1265  X  (r = 0.9992).   On the  other   hand, tensile strength   (Y)  was  significantly decreased  with  the  increasing  of hydrogen peroxyde  concentrations  (X,  as expressed by  the following rearession  equation:   Y  = 421.37 5 - 11.675 x  (r =  0.9888 ).The  apllcation  of 5 percent   hydrogen  peroxyde   concentration   is optimum  which  could improve the brightness  up to  46. 03 percent,   and  reduced  the  tensile  strength down  to 364.8  kg/cm2.

Abstract

General characteristics and anatomical properties of several major wood species in Jambi, Sumatera, have been studied. The purpose is to find out their characters for identification, their appropriate uses and their possibilities to be widely cultivated. Five major wood species have been identified and described: balam (Palaquium gutta Bail.), bayur (Pterospermum diversifolium BI.), medang (Litsea sp.), mahang (Macaranga pruinosa Muell.Arg.) and merkubung (Mac.-ranga gigantea Muell.Arg.). Balam and bayur are suitable for house construction, plywood, furniture: and their fibres are fairly good for pulp. Therefore balam and bayur are highly recommended to be widely cultivated. Mahang and merkubung are too light and soft for construction purposes where strength properties are of prime importance. However mahang and merkubung fibres are of good quality so they still can be recommended to be widely cultivated for pulp source. Medang is fairly appropriate for construction purposes and having fairly good quality fibres as well. However the occurrence of oil cells inside wood tissue and the possible effect of the exudate on gluability and paintability, have to be considered before decision is made for its cultivation in large quantities.
