Abstract

Kokon segar memiliki masa simpan yang singkat untuk dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan baku pembuatan benang sutra. Pupa dalam kokon akan tumbuh menjadi ngengat dalam waktu +5 hari. Proses pengeringan tidak hanya akan mematikan pupa, tapi juga menurunkan kadar airnya. Akan tetapi, karena kokon yang telah kering masih mudah menyerap air kembali dari lingkungannya, maka diperlukan alat penyimpanan kokon untuk mempertahankan mutunya. Permasalahan yang dihadapi di lapangan selama ini adalah pengamanan terhadap kokon  kering masih belum dilakukan dengan tepat. Kokon dimasukkan ke dalam karung bawang kemudian ditumpuk di ruangan terbuka yang kondisi suhu dan kelembabannya tidak diatur, sehingga selama penyimpanan kokon yang sudah kering akan menarik air kembali atau diserang jamur maupun serangga. Tujuan penelitian adalah mengamati kualitas filamen dan benang sutra dari kokon hasil uji coba menggunakan alat pengeringan EB-2005D dan penyimpanan EB-2007S yang didesain P3HH Bogor. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kualitas filamen maupun benang sutera dari kokon yang dikeringkan dan disimpan pada alat yang didesain P3HH Bogor lebih baik dibandingkan dengan kualitas dari kokon yang disimpan pada ruang yang tidak dikondisikan.

Abstract

Wood materials from plantation timber, among others is mangium (Acacia mangium Willd.) are supposed to be more susceptible to the wood-degrading organisms. This situation can expectedly be overcome by improving wood durability through a proper preservation. Previous study of the preservation of mangium wood was only by cold soaking treatment, using boron preservative. In order to provide a complete practical guidance of wood preservation, it would be necessary to study the preservation of such mangium by hot-cold treatment with not only boron but also CCB (copper-chrome-boron) preservatives.Mangium wood samples, after reaching their air-dry condition in block-shaped size measuring 5cm by 5cm by 100cm were treated by hot-cold soaking separately in solution of boron and CCB preservatives, varying at consecutively 5 percent, 7,5 percent and 10 percent. The treatment in this regard was implementing a particular schedule, which involved the regulation of soaking durations and temperatures. The durations in the hot-soaking stage for each preservative strength were 1 hour, 2 hours and 3 hours, with the temperature maintained at 65 to 70 °C. In the following cold-soaking stage, the durations were fixed for one day.The results showed that mangium wood treated with hot-cold soaking in either boron or CCB solution and implementing such particular schedule was only applicable for indoor uses, i.e. being under the roof utilization without ground contact. In this matter, the optimum strength for boron as well as CCB preservatives was 10 percent whereby the durations of hot-soaking stage were from one and three hours, followed by cold-soaking stage for one day.

Abstract

An investigation of skidding performance was conducted at one Forest company in Riau,  in 1988. The results showed that stand density  rangea  from  126 to 190  trees with an average of 158 trees/ha, soft soil .without any rock, land slope ranges from 6,8 to  20,0 % and the trees felled from 2 to 8 with an average of 5 trees/ha. Also it was found that the length of productive skidding road ranges from 91,0  m to 329,8 m with an average of 210,4 m /ha while the length of unprodue- tive skidding road vanes from 2,5 m to 49,9 m with an average of 26,2 m/ha. The ratio between the lengths of unproductive and productive  skidding road is 12,5 %. By considering tractor's life time 20.000   hours,  around  2.500  hours of them are  unproductiue, Relating this figure with owning and operating costs, those unproductive skidding road surely cause quite  large loss.  Besides, the unproductive tractor movements also cause land exposure to the amount of 122,5 m2/ha. All the above disadvantages can be minimized by planning akidding roads ahead and  strictly controlling the operation.

Abstract

Sumatera Utara merupakan sentra produksi kemenyan di Indonesia. Kemenyan di pasaran dikelompokkan menjadi 6 kualitas berdasarkan kriteria uji ukuran (besar kecilnya) lempengan/ bongkahan dan warna kemenyan, yaitu kualitas I s/d VI.Tujuan penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk mengetahui perbedaan sifat fisiko-kimia kemenyan berbagai kualitas yang ada di pasaran, sehingga diharapkan nantinya pengelompokkan kualitas kemenyan dapat dipertimbangkan secara kuantitatif berdasarkan unsur-unsur sifat fisiko-kimianya. Sifat fisiko-kimia kemenyan yang diuji adalah warna, bentuk, ukuran, kadar air, kadar kotoran, kadar abu, titik lunak dan kadar asam balsamat.Hasil analisa menunjukkan bahwa kadar air dan kadar abu relatif sama antara kemenyan kualitas I, II, III, IV dan V. Kadar kotoran dan titik lunak kemenyan kualitas I, II, III dan IV adalah relatif sama, sedangkan kadar asam balsamat kemenyan kualitas I, II dan III relatif sama. Dengan demikian disarankan pembagian kualitas kemenyan menjadi 4 kelas kualitas yaitu kualitas I berasal dari kemenyan kualitas I s/d III, kualitas II berasal dari kemenyan kualitas IV, kualitas III berasal dari kemenyan kualitas V dan kualitas IV berasal dari kemenyan kualitas VI.

Abstract

The resistance of 99 Indonesian wood species against dry wood termite (Cryptotermes cynocephalus Light) attack has been assessed. The wood species come from several regions in Indonesia. The woods were each cut to small samples measuring 5.0 cm by 2.5 cm by 2.0 cm and subsequently exposed to 50 dry wood termite of workers for twelve weeks.The results revealed that out of the 99 investigated wood species 33 (i.e. 33.33%) were classified as the most durable wood (classes I and II); and the rest, i.e. 66 species (66.6 %), were classified was lower durability (i.e. classes III, IV, and V) and, therefore, in their utilization, a preservative treatment is required.

Abstract

Keruing  oils can be obtained  through separating  the oil from keruing gum  by distillation technique,   or distilling  keruing  wood.  In accordance with the lattest method,   the objective of this research  is to study the  physico-chemical  properties  of keruing oils which were obtained by steam distillation  of   a mixture of several keruing wood species.  This wood was randomly taken three  times from  the wastes of wood processing  industry in East Kalimantan.   Each wood wastes taken was steam distilled  and  the yielded  oils were   analysed  their physico-chemical properties.   The difference between means value  of the properties of the oils  was tested by using LSD according td SAS  procedure.Results   revealed that  wood wastes gave  a highly  significant  effect on refractive  index, optical  rotation,  acid and  ester number  of keruing  oils.  It also gave  a significant  effect  on saponification   number.   Further  analysis   showed  that  the  keruing  oil  with  clear  colour compared  to  both  keruing  oil  with  clear yellow and pale  yellow  colour  was  a  significant difference in acid   and ester number.  Moreover,  the keruing oil with pale yellow  colour had ll significant  difference  in saponification   number  compared  the others.  Among  these  oils,  the refractive index and optical rotation properties  were a significant  difference one to the others. Based these results,  if  the keruing wood wastes will be used as raw materials for  keruing oil production,  it is better that the keruing wood containing much oil or gum should  be separated from the others before further processing.Keywords:  Keruing  oil, Dipterocarpus  spp, Steam distillation, oil properties

Abstract

Steam  activation   char of  wood,  bamboo,  and coconut shell  to produce  activated  charcoal were carried out  in a labora- tory  scale electric  heated  retort.The  treatment   conditions   applied  for  activation   were  temperature   of  700°C,  steam  flow  rate  of  30 g/minute  and reaction  time  15 minutes.   The  activated  charcoals produced   from   the  experiment   were  respectively   used  for refining  the samples  of  low grade commercial   coconut oil obtained   from   the  market.The  results  showed   that  all of  the  activated   charcoal  produced   can  increase   the  quality   of  coconut  oil  to  meet requirements   of  the  Indonesian   Industrial   Standard  (Sll).

Abstract

This paper present the study results on the effect of veneer thickness and glue spread on bonding strength of damar (Agathis spec.) plywood. The responses observed  were the corrected absorption height measurement, depth of lathe check of  veneers, veneers thickness,  moisture content,   specific  gravity and  plywood  bonding  strength. The design employed was  tire randomized completely design with factorial experiment.The results showed that the effect of veneers thickness on plywood bonding strength was not significant, while the glue spread have significant  effecton the plywood bonding strength.  To meet damar plywood requirement for interior uses it ts advised to use 150 gm: perface  of glue spread with urea formaldehyde adhesive.

Abstract

Anatomical properties is necessary for wood species identification. This paper observes anatomical properties of six wood species originated from Papua. Wood species studied include: ketapang  (Terminalia complanata K. Schum.); pala hutan (Gymnacranthera paniculata (A.DC.) Warb.); bipa (Pterygota horsfieldii (R.Br.) Kosterm).; kelumpang (Sterculia shillinglawii F. Muell.); manggis/kandis (Pentaphalangium parviflorum); and lancat/lebani (Mastixiodendron pachyclados (K. Schum) Melch.). Anatomical properties were observed according to IAWA (International Association of  Wood Anatomists) checklist. The anatomical main properties observed in ketapang wood were vestured pits, prismatic crystals in non-chambered axial parenchyma cells, and druses. Pala hutan main anatomical properties were the presence of tannin tubes and oil cells which were associated with axial parenchyma. Prismatic crystals in axial parenchyma cells, and rays of two distinct sizes were two main anatomical characteristics of bipa and kelumpang wood. Prismatic crystals in chambered axial parenchyma cells was one of characteristics of manggis wood. Vestured pits and scanty paratracheal parenchyma were two main characteristics of lancat wood. For identification pur poses, bipa wood could be distinguished by banded parenchyma; polygonal alternate pits; and prismatic crystals in non- chambered axial parenchyma cells.
