Abstract

Penelitian penyaradan kayu di hutan tanaman industri (HTI) dengan menggunakan traktor Valmet forwarder di lakukan di Perusahaan PT. RAPP, Provinsi Riau. Tujuannya adalah untuk memperoleh informasi tentang produktivitas, mekanisme kerja, biaya operasi, dan pemadatan tanah hutan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa produktivitas kerja penyaradan Valmet forwarder rata - rata 22,43 m/jam, biaya operasi rata - rata Rp 20.935,-/ m dan pemadatan tanah sangat ringan.

Abstract

The quality of machining properties of sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria Backer). obtained from 5 years, 10 years, and 15 years old plantation forest in West Java, has been Investigated based on air dried wood moisture content. The results revealed that the average planing quality of wood from 5 years old belong to medium (III). while those at 10 years and 15 years old belong to good (II); the average moulding quality varies from medium (III) to good (II) classes, but turning quality found to be very bad (V); sanding quality is medium (III), while boring quality varies from medium (III) to good (II) classes.

Abstract

An  inuestigation  on  forest  road conditiona  in teak forests  of  Cepu and Randublatung   Forest Districts and their soil erosion potentials  was conductild   in  early  1991.  The samples  of  roads  inuestigated  were  30  segments   in Cepu and  14 segments   in  Randublatung   each  of  60  m long.It  is found   that  from  the  total  of  266 km  truck  roads  in Cepu, only  3.7%  of  them  are in 2% are active roads. for the 180 km rail roads, 65.4% are in good conditionsIn Randublatung. the total  length of  truck  roads is 237  km  of  which  only  11.8%  are in good  conditiouns  but  78.3%  are active roads For rail roads, the total length is only  33 km  and only  13.5% of  them are in good  conditionsThe total  area used for road infrastructures (combined   truck  and  rail roads)  in cepu  and Randublatung   are 266  ha (0;8%) and 163 ha  (8.5%), respectively. This means that an average land lost due  to roading is 0. 7%.All  factors in the  USLE  for  the  teak forest  areas of  Cepu  and Randublatung are in the level of low  scores in terms of  soil erosion  acceleration  potentials  except   soil erodibility.   It is  noticed  in the field  that this soil erodibility factor is couered  by other  dominant facton   and. therefore,  soil  erosion potentials  of  forest roads roads are generally low.

Abstract

This report deals with an experiment on the manufacture of activated charcoal from the wastes of tea­ leaf processing. The purpose of the experiment was firstly, to evaluate the influence of H3P04 concentration as a chemical activator on the yield of activated charcoal and its quality, and secondly, to assess the possible use o( the corresponding activated charcoal in purifying fructose syrup as well as alcoholic spirit, and reducing the Fe1 ions in the pond water . The tea­leaf wastes were at first immersed in H1P04 solutions at four different concentrations (i.e. 5, 10, 15 and 20 %).for 24 hours. The wastes were removed and air­dried. The activated charcoal was produced by pyrolyzing the air­dry tea­leaf wastes in an electrical heated retort at 850°C, followed by the activation process. The steam was introduced into the retort and passed through the pyrolized tea­leaf wastes for 120 minutes.. The result revealed that the best quality ofthe activated charcoal was obtained with H3P04 immersion at 10 % with the yield of activated charcoal 13.78 %; the moisture content 6.92 %; ash content 15.68 %, volatile matter 4.68 % and fixed carbon 72. 71 %. Adsorptive capacity of iodine was 796.82 mglg, benzene 5.58 %, CHC1,4.14 % and adsorptive capacity of CC14,14.19 %.The quality of fructose syrup and alcoholic spirit after both being purified with the activated charcoal apparently improved. This was shown by the increases in clarity from 87.0 % to 92.0 ­ 97.2 % (for fructose syrup) and from 243.0 mg/L to 255.6­278.4 mg/L (for alcoholic spirit). The quality of the deep­weel water or particularly pond water also after being treated with the activated charcoal improved as well with the decrease in Fe3+ ions from 0.079 % to 0.016 ­0.045 %. The production cost to manufacture activated charcoal from tea­leaf wastes was Rp 5,738.82/kg.

Abstract

The experiment was carried out to study the role of lignin as dry wood termite Cryptotermes cynocephalus Light food. The C. cynocephalus termite was given lignin and cellulose food, separately or both in the test petridish.These research conclude that :1. C. cynocephalus termite besides eating cellulose as main food also eating lignin.2. The survival of C. cynocphalus termite was not influenced by the kind of food i.e. cellulose or lignin.3. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui sifat fisiko kimia minyak atsiri dari tanaman Cupressus benthamii Endl yang berasal dari arboretum Balai Penelitian Kehutanan Aek Nauli. Minyak atsiri diperoleh dengan cara menyuling daun segar dan daun layu menggunakan metode kukus selama 7 jam. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penyulingan daun layu menghasilkan rendemen minyak tertinggi sebesar 0,41%, dengan sifat fisiko kimia yaitu; berat jenis 0,889, indek bias 1,481, kelarutan alkohol 1:5, bilangan asam 3,8 mg KOH/g. Minyak atsiri Cupressus benthamii didominasi oleh ?-pinene (17,6%), sabinene (8,59%), 4-terpineol (6,56%), dan ?- terpentin (5,12%).

Abstract

Study of the effect of making undercut and back cut on the accuracy of tree felling direction and its effect on stump and technical wastes was conducted in plantation forest of Pulau Laut, South Kalimantan. Sampling trees were chosen purposively to the amount of 52 trees. Data on treefelling direction accuracy and the produced wastes were analyzed descriptively. Results showed that the combination of making either right or wrong undercut, and either right or wrong back cut was not the only factor affecting the accuracy of tree felling direction. It showed also that the quantity of the produced wastes was not only affected by accuracy or deviation on tree felling direction.

Abstract

Tractor and highlead  yarding  systems  are the most  common  logging systems  in the Indonesian  Selective  Cutting  (TPI) of its tropical rain forest  exploitations.   The study of  the logging system  performances  were conducted   to evaluate the extend  of residual stand damages. Studies in 22 forestry concessions  revealed  that  the  TPI concepts  have not been adopted  satisfactorily.   The study also confirmed that the average number  of trees having 35 cm  minimum diameter  are 11.6-70.8   trees per ha of commercial  species and 18. 7-79.4 trees per ha for all species.  With regard to the  TPI, there  were only  52.6 percent of   the forest  concessions  conformed   with  the specified  conditions  where at least 25 potential  trees per ha should remained  in the residual stands.Comparative  study  with  highlead  yarding  system  indicated  that  average number  of  potential   trees in the  residual stands were 5.1-16.6  trees per ha of  commercial  species and only  6.3-21.  7 trees per ha for all species. None of the concessions  with  highlead logging systems have met  the TPI requirements.The residual stand damage when  using highlead yarding  are significantly  higher (P  < .05) in comparison  with  that of the tractors.The  residual  stand  damages  were 68.7 to  71.7 percent  for  highlead  system  while only  3.9-52.2  percent  for  the  tractor.  The study  concluded  that with  respect to damages, tractor yarding  is preferable over highlead.

Abstract

Telah dilakukan percobaan kemungkinan pemanfaatan minyak biji jarak pagar (Jatropa curcas) untuk biodiesel sebagai alternatif petrosolar melalui proses estrans (esterifikasi dan transesterifikasi) dan penggunaan bahan antioksidan. Proses estrans mengakibatkan perubahan karakteristik minyak jarak (antara lain penurunan kerapatan, viskositas, bilangan asam, dan bilangan iod), sehingga meningkatkan kinerjanya sebagai biodiesel. Tiga macam bahan antioksidan digunakan (BHT, TBHQ, dan Formula X), masing-masing dengan variasi konsentrasi 0,03-0,10%, dan sesudahnya diberi tenggang waktu mulai dari minggu pertama hingga minggu ke empat. Respons yang diamati adalah bilangan peroksida, bilangan asam, dan viskositas kinematik. Hingga minggu keempat pada biodiesel dengan penggunaan antioksidan tetap terjadi oksidasi (bilangan peroksida, bilangan asam, dan viskositas biodiesel meningkat), tetapi dengan intensitas jauh lebih rendah dibandingkan dengan biodiesel kontrol (tanpa antioksidan). Antioksidan yang paling efektif menghambat oksidasi adalah TBHQ, disusul oleh BHT dan Formula X. Formula X diharapkan bisa seefektif seperti TBHQ dan BHT, tetapi pada konsentrasi lebih tinggi (>0.10%). Karakeristik biodiesel baik kontrol ataupun yang diberi antioksidan (hingga tenggang waktu minggu keempat) banyak memenuhi persyaratan SNI dan sebanding dengan karakteristik petrosolar.

Abstract

Gelam ( Melaleuca sp. ) Is a tidal marsh species that grow in the swamp forests of South Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan. Gelam is one of the species of timber-producing potential as liquid smoke with the technology available and easy to implement. This paper study the possible uses of softwood for liquid smoke. Liquid smoke derived from wood pyrolysis process at a temperature of 500 ° C for 3 hours. Liquid smoke is a reddish yellow, transparent and no floating material. Liquid smoke density is 1.008 to 1.058 with 3.105 to 3.195 pH and acidity varied from 5.167 to 12.903%. Carbonyl and phenol levels respectively is 11.250 to 28.307% and 2.429 to 9.231%. In general, softwood produce liquid smoke and meets quality requirements of Japanese standards.
