Abstract

Some of the thinkers who emerged in the history of thought of Muslims complained of the low response of the Qur’an toward empirical reality and the needs ofcommunity. They were sure that it was because of the tradition of study of the Qur’an that Muslims developed until now is less dialogical approach in addressing the reality, and that the interpretation of studies so far is more dominated by the patterns offiqh, kalam, and mysticism, and only a little to do with the pattern of education. Yet the Qur’an actually views human as the object of education in a long process with the ultimate objective of happiness of the world and the hereafter. This process involves human in an intensive dialogue and it takes time. This paper offers a selection of verses of the Qur’an and then analyses it with a historical approach that the results will be the philosophical basis andfundamental principles of human education efforts to achieve perfect being. This paper concludes that the gradual way of revelation of the Qur’an shows that this holy book presents as a “book of education” that accompanies everyday life of man. Thus the study of the meaning of the verses of the Qur’an with a multidisciplinary approach is a must as a form of attempt to optimize the intake of ”divine nutrition” to human health in living his life.

Abstract

Islam encourages Moslems to seek for knowledge regardless the area boundary, age, and field of interest. However, the Islamic education in Indonesia has not been able to facilitate men and women to obtain equal education. This gender gap is found in the policy, management, and teaching institutions of Islamic education. This has an impact on learner output, his/her roles and responsibilities in society. Although the President Instruction No. 9/2000, which foreruns the implementation of gender mainstreaming in national development, has been implemented more than a decade, the policy is neither fully understood nor well implemented especially in the field of Islamic education. Gender mainstreaming is still questioned because a number of institutions and relevant parties have not shown serious responses yet to overcome gender gaps in such areas as policy making, management, and learning. Carrying out analytical study on the gender mainstreaming in Islamic education is, therefore, inevitable: i.e. whether or not it has been practiced based on the implementation guidelines of gender mainstreaming in the national development.

Abstract

A globalization, which looks like both sides of one coin, has both positive and negative impacts. The globalization inspired not only by capitalism but also by pragmatism has practically affected the education in Indonesia. The roles of education become practically unfamiliar and faraway from society needs. The globalization takes some issues such as competence, standardization, and commerce. To face this era, what should Islamic education do as sub-system of national education? The Islamic school (madrasah) as a sub-system of Islamic education in Indonesia, had extremely strong experienced to face the challenges at the last era of Dutch colonialism. The fact that madrasah had not only an autonomy but also an intellectual resources had proven that it could fulfill the needs of Islamic community. These are cultural potencies which should be kept and not be abandoned for the sake of globalization interest. The globalization as a cultural transformation process affects the world, especially the practice of education in Indonesia. All people using science and technology can easily access the global culture. The global culture which is value-free should be faced by transformation of values of which Islamic scholars had transformed in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) and Islamic schools (madrasah). In other word, both pesantren and madrasah should not be entrapped in capitalism ideology and could serve all people. It is because the paradigm of Islamic education differs from that of both capitalism and pragmatism. The article tries to elaborate how Islamic education in Indonesia especially madrasah should be positioned in the global era

Abstract

The training pattern at a pesantren community has until now been viewed as the best one. The pattern can simultaneously integrate both the cognitive and the behavior of the community. They are not only oriented cognitively by their leaders and teachers but also provided with the environment and living model. This is the case of Pesantren Al-Basyariah Bandung. The school of the Pesantren emphasizes a strict discipline of the day-to-day activities over all members of the community. So, every new members of the community will be informed of a book of discipline rules which also contains the rules of punishments for any offender. The Pesantren applies a tight control over the students, involving all units of the school institution, including student organization (OSPA), and other supporting community outside the school. The cognitive-behavior pattern of training has been proved effective at Pesantren AlBasyariah as a model of training.

Abstract

Indonesia with diversity of ethnic, culture, tradition, social group, religion, and so on, on the one hand, has aroused the dynamics of cultural diversity and positive civilization; on the other hand, it will even become the cause of conflict and disintegration, if it is not managed wisely and comprehensively. Multicultural education in Indonesia, however, should not only become an academic discourse, but it needs to be implemented in the concrete sphere, among them is in the education realm. Here, we need a conceptual frame in its implementation, so that the problem that emerges as the effect of the diversity and religiousness bias does not become a heavy burden of this nation. Multicultural education is a reform as well as the process of education which inculcate to the students the values and beliefs the importance of uniqueness recognition at every ethnic, culture, and other social groups. There are at least five scopes in multicultural education, they are (1) promotion to strengthen cultural diversity; (2) promotion to respect human right and other different people; (3) promotion to act based on his own way of life for every human being; and (5) promotion to the importance of equality and distribution of authority among different social groups.

Abstract

Al-Quran as a guidance to life for Muslims does not give details about the ins and outs of education. However, there are several terms related to educational issues in this holy books. This article tries to get a complete sketch of the nature and purpose of education in Islam by discussing the meaning of these terms according to the language experts and education thinkers, so that the opinions of mutual support among them will be used as the basis to draw the conclusion. This paper comes to the conclusion that the terms tarbiyah, ta ’lim, ta ’dib, tazkiyah and tahdhib give the message about the nature of education and its aims. The purpose of education in the perspective of the Qur’an is focused in three points. First, to achieve complete human being in the pillars of his life. Second, to build a comprehensive human dimension of religion, culture, and science. Third, to make human beings resposible of their function as servants of God and inheritors of the Prophet. The very nature of some of these goals is to achieve a true Muslim characterized with the notion of rah}matan li al-’a> lami>n. Thus, the purpose of Islamic education in the Qur’an is not merely the transfer of knowledge, but is also the the transfer process of value. This purpose is also related to effort to establish the h}abl min Alla>h, h}abl min al-na>s, and h}abl min al- ’a> lam, that is the good relation with God, mankind, and the nature.

Abstract

Insight on the progress of the PTAI (Institute of Islamic Studies) in Indonesia so far involves many things; the disorder of epistemological basis of the PTAI, the direction of global policy in structuring the curriculum, the recruitment of stakeholders, then standardization of the quality of graduates, and institutional holder. One thing that seems to be the consensus among observers is the lack of quality of PTAI’s graduates. However, so far there is no consensus among the thinkers, policy makers as well as the PTAI’s functionaries about how to solve this problem. In the midst of diversity discourse about it, stood out a solution that is much in demand by PTAI’s functionaries, namely the transition of institutional status, from the STAIN to the IAIN, and over from the IAIN to UIN. This paper tries to trace the historical roots of the founding the PTAI in Indonesia to find their main tasks. Results of the search was used as a foothold to reflect on the PTAI’s performance today. This paper finds that since their establishment, Islamic higher education institutions is to bring two tasks, namely as a religious institution and as a scientific institution. In the course of history, sometimes these two tasks go hand in hand, but often both were at opposite position. At one point, Islamic studies at the PTAI took the tendency of normative idealistic-theological approach abandoning the academic approach. Then in the last few decades came the openness, which presented the empirical and academic study of Islam. This paper concludes that the transformation or institutional reform of the PTAI’s status is not the answer to the problem of Islamic studies, but the more important is realignment of the structure of sciences in the PTAI which is the foundation for the interdisciplinary study on Islamic dogmas. The quality of graduates is expected to be flown with a firm decision, whether PTAI will be academic, preaching, or practical-pragmatic interests institutions.

Abstract

As a complete way of life for of Muslims, the Qur’an gives guidelines about education, in addition to the theology and the law. The history of thought of Muslims presented several paradigms of interpretation of the Qur’an, rangefrom the strictfundamentalist to the liberal. Thisfact indicates that the demands of Muslims to the sciences of the Qur’an and the results of them always arouse throughout the history. Even the enthusiasts ofstudy the Qur’an in the contemporary era insist that the Qur’an gives the widespread possibilities of meanings and themes. Taking into account the contemporary demands to education, it does not matter with using any paradigm of interpretation, but the choice to use a thematic method (al-tafsir al‑mawdu ‘i) is the most appropriate choice. Thematic method will generate a thorough understanding of the concept of Islamic education, and this is the right way to establish the discipline of Qur ’anic educational exegesis (al-tafsir al-tarbawi). In essence, thinkers on Islamic education should continuously develop elaboration of the concept ofIslam which views human beings have the their potential to achieve the perfection by integrating the innate factors and the environmental ones.
