Abstract

Key words: [Social Class, In Time, Class Conflict, Mise-en-Scene]The social structure created by state capitalism principle oppresses the proletarian class, and because of the oppression, the conflicts of interest between classes are born. In a way to survive in life and pursuit for happiness, some philosophers think that the struggle of the oppressed class must be done. Struggle is the only solution for the proletarian class to bring happiness to their life. The researcher is interested in analyzing the conflict of interest between two social classes reflected in the movie entitled In Time. The researcher is also interested in analyzing the struggle of proletarian against bourgeoist capitalism system.This research uses the Marxism theory of social class and class conflict proposed by Karl Marx. Other than that, to support the analysis, the researcher uses Mise-en-scene to help the researcher analyze some scenes in the movie entitled In Time. This research is in form of textual analysis because the aim of this research is related to the content of the movie. In conducting the research, the researcher follows several steps to get the data.After analyzing the movie, the researcher found the triggers that lead to the struggle of proletarian class against the bourgeoist capitalism system. The struggle of proletarian against bourgeoist is represented by the main character, Will Salas. Will Salas’ struggle is triggered by the unfair system to the people in Ghetto. The purpose of Will Salas’ struggle is to bring back what belongs to people in Ghetto. So, people in Ghetto will get what they deserve and a better life.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Stress, Coping with the Stress, A Doctor’s Visit.Someone who faces the psychological problem in their life can keep it secretly. However, it has an impact for human’s life as stress causing psychological and physical disturbances. Thus, to overcome the impacts, person tries to find a way to cope with his psychological problem. It is reflected in A Doctor’s Visit by Anton Chekhov. The story tells about Lizanka who has psychological problems. Moreover, the psychological problems make her becomes stressful and bears it impacts, psychologically and physically. Thus, to cope with the impacts, she needs to solve her stress by finding solutions for her psychological problem.Therefore, this study uses stress and coping theory to analyze Lizanka’s ways in coping her psychological problems and its impacts. The result of this study shows that Lizanka can cope her psychological problem and its impacts that she bears by using several ways and by the attendancing and helping of Korolyov. The ways that she takes are seeking social support, and positive reappraisal. Thus, because of the presences and helps of Korolyov and also the coping ways that she takes, she seems relieved and sees her problem positively. As a result, it makes her not stressful anymore. For the next researchers, it is recommended to analyze A Doctor’s Visit from Freudian’s psychoanalysis point of view that is three systems of personality; id, ego and superego.

Abstract

Keywords: Divergent, Female Stereotype, Feminism. The term of sex and gender are familiar in social life. Sex and gender which are attributed in a person are different each other. Sex is the organ adheres in human body since they born until grow up and it is natural. On the other hand, gender is the characterization which is constructed by social based on the sex. The concept of gender leads the different treatment and stereotypes between men and women. Redefinitions of female stereotype are found in literary works, which is found in Veronica Roth’s novel entitled Divergent. This novel tells about Tris Prior who redefinites female stereotypes.This research uses the feminist approach to analyze Tris’s characteristics in fighting for the opportunity to develop her potential in anotherfaction, suitable with her characteristics. Dring  her struggle, Tris shows that there is the redefinition of female stereotype in her characteristics.The research findings shows that Tris is portrayed as a smart, courageous, persevering, and determined woman who has the leadership skill. These traits have helped her survive in Dauntless. The next researchers are suggested to analyze more to reveal Tris Prior’s characters and motifs using psychological approach in order to reach a more comprehensive analysing on the novel.

Abstract

Keywords: Jargon, Chatting, DotAJargon is commonly used by groups that have similar interest, like trades or profession. In internet world, such as online game, gamers do not communicate directly, but they use chatting language for communication. Through chatting, gamers have their own language that only can be understood by them. This language is considered as unique and very useful to communicate effectively while they playing the game. Therefore, the writer is interested to conduct a study on jargon used in DotA. By taking chatting from online game named, DotA, the writer proposed two problems: (1) What jargons are used on chatting in DotA online game and (2) What are the word processes formed the jargon of DotA online game.This study used qualitative approach regard the writer described language phenomenon comprehensively through the words and language. The writer performeddocument collection in order to obtain data. In collecting document the writer activelyparticipated in several games of DotA. The document refers to any word or expression occurred in the conversation in this case known as chatting during the gameplay which is available to be saved into chat log. The writer stopped collecting the data once it had reached point of saturation.The finding revealed that there are 59 jargons found in chatting. The writer found seven types of word formation processes; acronym, clipping, coinage, blending, borrowing, multiple processes, and conversion. Acronym is found to be the most wordformation processes used due to particular reasons. Generally, acronym is frequentlyfound due to its usage could ease gamers in chatting with keyboard as typing media.It is suggested for the future researchers to have research using other media, such as movie, newspaper, magazines, etc. The result of the research is to attest, that internet world also has its own language for communication that cannot be separatedform society.

Abstract

Keywords : semantics, connotative meaning, song lyrics, Linkin Park and A Thousand Suns album Language is a fundamental device used by people to communicate. A sentence or an utterance in which people use to express their feelings and thoughts is generally containing either literal meaning or non-literal meaning. One kind of non-literal meaning is connotative meaning which is subjective and not perceived the same way by the speakers of a language. This research focuses on analysing the connotative meaning contained in Linkin Park’s song lyrics by using Leech’s theory (1990). This research is aimed to show the interpretation of the connotations found in the song lyrics, the messages of the songs, and the contribution of the connotations to the messages. The problems of the study are (1) what are the expressions containing connotative meanings in the song lyrics of Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns album, (2) what are the messages of the songs in Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns album, and (3) how do the connotations contribute to the messages conveyed in the songs. This research used qualitative approach because the data are in the form of song lyrics. Documentary analysis was applied to find out the connotative meaning contained in the song lyrics, the messages, and the contribution of the connotations to the messages of the songs. The researcher collected the data by downloading the songs and the lyrics, reading the song lyrics, and making a list of the expressions that contain connotative meaning. Then the researcher analyzed the data by identifying the connotative meanings, figuring out the messages, and correlating the contribution of the connotations to the messages. The result of the research shows that there are 46 utterances containing connotative meanings in the song lyrics. The connotative meaning found is carried within words, phrases, and also sentences. The messages conveyed in the songs are mostly motivating and persuasive. The connotations used in the song lyrics are to portray images and build certain atmospheres. The connotations found in the song lyrics play an important role in creating particular senses and delivering the messages.The researcher suggests the next researchers conduct a research in semantics field by using different object of the study such as Indonesian songs. Also, different theory may be used as well in order to get more understanding about connotative meaning.

Abstract

Key words: motivation, instrumental motivation, integrative motivation, TOEFL Program, ELFAST English Course.Nowadays, mastering a foreign language is important in order to adjust it with globalization era. In second language learning, there are some factors which influence the learners to be succesed in acquiring a foreign language. One of them is motivation.  Motivation is the reason why people do something based on their desire.This study was aimed to answer three problems of study namely: (1) What arethe types of motivation used by the students at TOEFL Program of ELFAST EnglishCourse in Pare? (2) What is the most dominant motivation in learning English of thestudents at TOEFL Program of ELFAST English Course in Pare? and (3) Is there any significant relationship between motivation used by the students at TOEFL Program of ELFAST English Course in Pare and their TOEFL scores?.In this study, the writer used Gardner’s theory (1985) about motivatio.In this study, the writer used descriptive quantitative approach. The instrument used to investigate motivation is AMTB questionnaire designed by Gardner (1985). The data sources of this study were24 students of TOEFL Program which was divided into 3 classes, A, B, and C. In collecting the data, the writer did the process of distributing the questionnaires and putting them into a table. Then, the writer analyzed the data by calculating it using computer application called Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS).The result showed that the types of motivation used by the students at TOEFL Program of ELFAST English Course in Pare was instrumental motivation and integrative motivation and the primary types of motivation among the students at TOEFL program of ELFAST English Course in Pare was instrumental motivation.Related to the relationship between motivation and students’ TOEFL scores, thepositive significant correlation is revealed between motivation and students’ Englishproficiency measured by TOEFL final scores.From this study, the writer suggests the future researchersto conduct a research regarding motivation in learning English by using instrument Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) questionnaire while collecting the data and explore more reason items of motivation from the questionnaire.The future researchers can also expand the motivation research and correlated it with other fields in second language learning. It might be correlated with learning strategy, learning style, or others

Abstract

Keywords: Movie, Character and Characterization, Pursue Justice, Revenge, Psychological approach. Character is a part of movie. Characters are the people in narratives, and characterization is the author’s presentation and development of characters, is about Law Abiding Citizen movie that is analyzed by the writer is telling someone who pursues justice. The movie tells about someone who is disappointed with the law system which does not work properly, so he pursues justice. By the writer uses psychological approach to analyze main character in Law Abiding Citizen movie. The approach focuses on the concept of hatred and revenge. This studyaims to find out struggle of main character to pursue justice in Law Abiding Citizen movie.The result of the research shows that in Law Abiding Citizen movie, someone who is disappointed with the law system, struggles to pursue justice by any means to get justice and to change the law system to be better. For the next researchers who look for new object to be analyzed, they are suggested to use Law Abiding Citizen movie that is analyzed by using sociology theory, because this movie can be related to daily life.

Kata kunci : Emosi, selingkuh/perselingkuhan, teori tahapan berduka, coping,pendekatan psikologis sastraSetiap kehidupan rumah tangga memiliki permasalahan yang salah satunya adalah perselingkuhan. Perselingkuhan memiliki dampak sangat besar sehingga memicu individu yang menjadi korban perselingkuhan menampakkan respon emotifnya. Tidak hanya dalam kehidupan nyata, tema perselingkuhan juga dimunculkan dalam berbagai karya sastra. Salah satunya adalah roman La Femme Rompue. Roman ini bercerita tentang Monique yang menikah selama lebih dari dua puluh tahun dengan Maurice. Maurice melakukan perselingkuhan yang mengakibatkan Monique mengalami kesedihan dan berbagai macam tekanan perasaan. Rumusan masalah penelitian ini adalah (1) Bagaimana respon emotif tokoh Monique dalam menghadapi perselingkuhan Maurice dalam roman La Femme Rompue ditinjau dari perspektif psikologis mengenai tahapan berduka, (2) Bagaimana cara tokoh Monique mengatasi gejolak emosional akibat perselingkuhan yang dilakukan Maurice. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui respon emotif tokoh Monique melalui tahapan berduka dan cara tokoh Monique mengatasi permasalahannya.Penelitian ini menggunakan teori tahapan berduka yang dikemukakan oleh Elizabeth Kubler-Ross pada tahun 1969 dan teori coping yang dicetuskan Lazarus dan Folkman pada tahun 1984. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode studi pustaka untuk mengumpulkan data dan metode analisis deskriptif untuk menganalisis data.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tokoh Monique menampilkan respon emotifnya dalam menghadapi perselingkuhan pasangannya melalui empat tahapan dari lima tahapan berduka yang ada. Tahapan yang dilalui adalah denial, anger, bargaining, dan acceptance, sedangkan tahap yang dilewati adalah depression. Untuk mengatasi kesedihan akibat perselingkuhan tersebut tokoh Monique melakukan beberapa strategi coping, yaitu problem-focused coping meliputi confrontative coping dan planfull problem solving serta emotion-focused coping meliputi self-control, distancing, seeking social support, positive reappraisal, accepting responsibility, dan avoidance/escape.Penulis menyarankan pada penelitian selanjutnya untuk melakukan analisis terhadap hubungan antara respon emotif tokoh dalam roman La Femme Rompue dengan feminisme sebagai aliran yang diusung oleh Simone de Beauvoir.

Keywords: Psychoanalysis, Freudian Psychology, Anxiety, Defense Mechanism Psychoanalysis is useful to understand human behavior. Psychoanalysis is also useful to help in understanding literary texts, which are about human behavior. This study analyzes Victor Frankenstein, the main character in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein novel. His psychological condition experiences anxiety and defense mechanism can be analyzed through Freudian’s psychology.Related to this case, this study aims to reveal Victor Frankenstein’s anxiety and how he copes with that by using defense mechanism. This study uses qualitative approach to reveal Victor Frankenstein’s anxiety and defense mechanism as depicted in the novel.This study reveals that Victor Frankenstein experiences anxiety after he creates his creature. He experiences the reality anxiety because of his creature’s appearance. The neurotic anxiety also occurs on him because he often expects something dreadful to happen. And the last, moral anxiety occurs because of his guilty feeling for his family's death. In order to reduce these anxieties, he uses repression, reaction formation and projection as tactics called defense mechanism.

Abstract

Keywords: Speech Act, Facebook, Status Updates and Gender Speech act is an act performed behind the utterance. Speech act is a part of Pragmatics which is included into Macro Linguistic. In this modern era, technology always develops. One of the products of the technology development is social media. Simply put, by using social media people can communicate with others in simple way. Facebook is a social media which has many users around the world. This research uses Facebook as the object of research. The researcher analyzes status updated posted by the members of Facebook’s Group “FIB-UB 2010” using speech act theory. The researcher wants to know type of illocutionary act which found in status updates posted by the members of the group. The researcher also wants to know the dominant type of illocutionary act found in this group. In this research, the researcher divides the members of the group based on their gender to make easy classification of their status updates.The result of the research shows that in Facebook’s Group “FIB-UB 2010”, most status updates whether posted by male or female members, was included into type of illocutionary act called directive. Directive are acts used by the speaker to get the addressee to do something. So mostly status updated consist of some acts which belonged into directive such as request and order. The researcher argues, the possible reason why directive becomes the dominant type is that the data taken in academic situation where the members of the group was looking for information about their thesis project.For the next researchers who look for same object and same classification (gender) to be analyzed, they are suggested to focus on one act of illocutionary act such as act of requesting and try to find out the correlation between act of requesting that produced by male and female members with gender. So that, the next researcher will used speech act to analyze the act, and will continue by using sociolinguistic approach to find out the correlation of act with gender difference.
