In Islamic thought, Mu?tazilah has been classified as a rational form of current of thought. This paper is interested in exploring in a deeper manner this Mutazilite rationalism be referring specirfically to its concept of tauhid. We argue that Mu?tazilah is concerned simply with presenting this concept in its purest form. Hence, they reject the notion of God having similarity with His creatures (tashb?h) and of Him having earthly body (tajs?m). Interestingly however, the Muktzilah is not always consistent with this general hypothesis, and argue for example that the attributes of God?like His words, the Qur?an?are created (makhl?q). We will try to expose that inconsistence as part of our critique to the Mu?tazilah. The paper will also discuss proportionately the problems of tawh ?d rub?b?yah and tauhid al-dh?t wa al-s ifah, of which the Mu?tazilah has given reasonably especial attention. With regard to tauhid ul?h?yah, the paper will only speak in general terms considering that the concept has not recived a clear explanation of the Mu?tazilah. We understand nonetheless that this latter concept is about a rasional argumentation concerning the existence of God.

In speaking of Islamic studies, we need to remember two things. First is the approach by which we elaborate certain point from certain perspective. In Islamic studies?like in any other studies?approaches vary. Different approaches would bring different conclusions. However, as long as an approach is academically sound and acceptable and meets all standards required, any conclusion resulted thereon is deemed correct and justifiable. Hence, no single conclusion is considered right while the other is wrong. Islamic studies should therefore acknowledge that academic truth is not singular but plural on the ground that there are many approaches toward many conclusions. It is this notion that we want to discuss here. We are interested in exploring the notion of intellectual truth. We hold that differences in opinion should be accepted as natural. Second is, that there is no fundamental differences in the basic value of sciences of any kinds. In other words, what is popularly known as Western science and Islamic science does not in principle differ. Science is science. There cannot be a dichotomy between Islamic or non-Islamic science. Dichotomy in science is not acceptable. Science belongs to all culture, tradition and religion. It does not know particularity. It is universal. Islamic studies should understand this, and use all tools, approaches, methodologies?albeit Western?for their improvement. It is toward these issues that this paper is destined.

This article deals with Muhammadiyah?s view of the inter-connection between religion and culture. Religion is a divine product while culture is a human invention. How these two different domains are inter-related will be a kind of formidable task to expose. To do this, the paper will discuss first the possible relation between Muhammadiyah and Salafiyah as far as theology is concerned. Many have contended that Muhammadiyah is an extension of this rabian theology. The paper will try to trace if there is any such theological relation between the two by appealing to some basic concepts that both Muhamadiyah and Salafiyah hold such as the concept of puritanism; that the Qur?an and the prophetic traditions are the sole sources for both religion and culture. But we also try to explore the unique aspect of each movement of which the other does not share. Thus, Muhammadiyah?unlike Salafiyah?has a good deal of awareness in culture and even adopts the ?cultural approach? in propagating Islam. As a religious organization whose task lies mainly in calling people into Islam, Muhammadiyah has advocated what is commonly known as the ?dakwah cultural?; a cultural approach in dakwah. For this purpose, Muhammadiyah has designed a guidebook on how ?dakwah kultural? is carried out, its steps, and strategies. In writing his paper, we hope to shed a better light on the objective nature of Muhammadiyah and its view concerning religion and culture.

Two important concepts in economics represent the main ideas that this paper is concerned with, namely the concept of self-interest and mas lah ah. These two concepts will be analyzed in the light of what is commonly known as the economic rationality. The rational dimension of economy is about the individual act in consumption and production. An act in consumption and production?like in any other acts?is called rational as long as it is line with one?s logic. When an act is done not in a proper concordance with logic, then the act is not rational. Pure Capitalism in which one would justify his/her acts of oppressing others economi cally for example, cannot be called rational because it is not logical and is not in a proper consonance with the ethical values. We argue therefore that the rational dimension coupled with its ethical apparatus must represent the heart of all economic activities if a healthy economic foundation is to be established. Here we contend that self-interest?as opposed to maslahah?hasno place whatsoever in the whole schemata of rational economy. On the contrary, mas lahah is an alternative for the already hegemonic system of global economy in which self-interest is its core. Maslahah ah is to do with society-interest and not self-interest. At the end, this paper is a critique against the global capitalistic economy that has failed to establish justice and equality for all.

Inter-religious conflict has been part of the history of religions. To the dismay of many, the conflict has escalated from time to time overshadowing the benevolent nature of religions as a blessing for mankind. Hence, instead of addressing the formidable problems of poverty, backwardness, ignorance, injustice, oppression and the like, people of different religions in one way or another are dragged into the acts of violence. It is this unfortunate development in the history of religions that we are interested in discussing by appealing to the ideas of Farid Esack who has established himself as an international scholar of Islam. We portray Esack as a man whose attention is being paid solely to promote the inter-religious dialogue with a single purpose in mind, to push peace and harmony for all regardless of their race and religion. We are particularly interested in developing further the idea of what he calls a ?productive dialogue? in which an awareness of religious solidarity constitutes an integral part. We will try to expose the ?hermeneutics of awareness? to get a better idea of what Esack is trying to do as far as social harmony is concerned. Within this scheme we will also discuss some other related issues such as the problem of pluralism and liberation. We argue that Esack sees the problem of social harmony as essentially theological and not simply political. It is therefore the task of religion?and not simply of politic?to deal with such problem.

It seems legitimate to say that the classical-conventional methodology gives birth to a rigid and theo-centric view of Islam. This form of methodology is dogmatic and is replete with a systematic indoctrination, such that would lead one to accept a particular view of religion often blindly while believing that other views are wrong. This paper offers a challenge to that old-fashion methodology by deconstructing it, and then constructing a new form of methodology. We treat the classical methodology as being literal-normative, and the new one that we propose as being contextual-historical. We argue that the former has gone out of context, because it was invented for its own time. The latter in the meantime is critical and considerate to new demands and contexts. We speak of this new methodology as characteristically multi-disciplin-ary in the sense that within its premises, various forms of knowledge are deemed to have been interconnected and together constitute an integral web of epistemic construction.

This paper discusses the highly controversial issues in the northern part of Surabaya; an issue that has attracted the attention of both parents and teachers alike, the issue of High School students? attachment to the values of Islam. Many worried that given their attitude, these students have no concern whatsoever with the basic principles of Islam. This paper will show the otherwise by investigating carefully the notion of career choice among these students. This specific field of investigation has not received proportional attention from any field researcher apart from its significance both to the state of our education and moral conduct. The paper first argues that the attitude of these students is more complicated than many have assumed. It then tries to show that religious values are in fact the strongest determinants in students making their career choice. This theory comes as a serious challenge to many baseless assumptions that as a religion Islam has lost its influence over its younger followers. This research is done in different areas in the northern part of Surabaya. The questionnaires are distributed at random representing each area proportionally. The data are collected through these questionnaires based on the theory of Holland RIASEC.

This paper is about a critical survey of Charles J. Adams? insights concerning the definition and nature of religion. We are particularly interested in digging up the logic and methodological inconsistency of Charles Adams as far as his offer on religious studies is concerned. Initially we were impressed by the power of his allusions. But the deeper we go the more we found out that his thought is replete with methodological incongruence. First, he is not certain about the definition of religion; an uncertainty that leads to a lot of fundamental errors in the description of religion as a whole. Second, he is not sure what line of argument he follows, the fact that leads to confusion whether he is reductionist or anti-reductionist. It is about this confusion that this paper is concerned with. Although a major part of this paper deals with religions in general, its theme and problems are of particular importance to the study of Islam.

This paper discusses the problem of inter-marriage between customary law and Islamic law by referring to the laws of Panji Selaten and Beraji Niti as a case in point. These are the laws of Kutai Kertanegara Sultanate in Kalimantan. The paper particularly asks to what extent does customary law in Kutai Kertanegara absorbs Islamic law and vice versa. We argue that this case is a perfect example of not only the ability of Islam to adapt to a local scenario but also the genius of early Muslims in this particular region to understand the universal message of Islam. That Islam is universal means that it is applicable in different settings and contexts. We also discuss the history of the two laws, their characteristics and systems in order to present a clear idea of how they connote to the Islamic values. Further, through this study we try to show that in one way or another, the Dutch colonizing power at the time was aware that to keep the resistance at bay, it has to apply the policy of what Van Den Berg calls receptio in complexu, that is recognizing and applying Islamic law for the Muslims.

Jih?d is one of the Islamic teachings which has been extensively discussed since the last few decades due to the increasing acts of violence perpetrated by some Muslims. This article tries to join this discussion by presenting Muh ammad ?Abd al-Sal?m Faraj?s concept of jih?d and his ideas of Islamic state and Caliphate by referring to his al-Far?d ah al-Gh??ibah (the Neglected Duty). We argue that Faraj?s basic perception of the Egyptian politics and society at the time shaped his whole concept of state and Caliphate. We hence contend that his proposal of jih?d is born out of his disappointment of the Egyptian government and even society as far as applying Islamic law is concerned. He uncompromisingly believed that the government and society are hypocrite and apostate for distancing themselves from the divine law of God. This belief prompted four members of Jih?d Organization to which Faraj belongs, to assassinate President Sadat in October 1981. By jihad, Faraj means fighting and confrontation against enemies even through bloodshed. And by enemies he means anyone who is not willing to apply God?s law on earth. The most controversial idea that Faraj has tried to pose is that jih?d is considered to the sixth pillar of Islam, which has to be carried out by each and every member of Muslim ummah.
