Abstract

Almost all Muslims agree that an authentic prophetic tradition (Ḥadîth) is that which comes directly from the Prophet. A tradition such as this like the Qurân is reliable in terms of its chain of narration and message. Hence, it brings legal and moral implication for the Muslims to apply in their daily life. In the science of prophetic tradition, such tradition is called darûrî, literally means compulsory in the sense that it necessitates Muslims to comply. Different sort of view however, is being introduced by an orientalist named G.H.A. Juynboll. He comes up with an entirely different view concerning an authentic prophetic tradition both in terms of its category and definition. He reckons that there is no such thing as an authentic prophetic tradition. Every prophetic tradition is vague, and falls therefore under the category of being inauthentic. This paper is interested in dealing critically with this controversial view by giving particular attention to four main issues; the issue of definition, criteria, the number of narrators, and the rationale of a prophetic tradition to be deemed authentic.

Abstract

Difference of opinion is highly respected in Islam. The Prophet of Islam is even reported to have said that, difference of opinion is divine providence?. This paper tackles this issue particularly within the science of prophetic tradition, and relates it to the way Muslim legalists develop the logics of law. The paper first argues that difference of opinion is not only natural but also needed in legal and social life. It is also viewed in terms of social conflict a requirement for a social integration. The paper speaks of the two sources of Islam?the Quran and the prophetic tradition?as supportive of this difference of opinion and shows that the prophet, his companions, and closest followers are all involved in debate stemmed from their difference of opinion. This difference is the natural consequence of the difference in the level of understanding, different language, culture, way of thinking, custom, and the extent to which the companions are in engaged in the activities of the prophet.

Abstract

There have been many methods and ways to understand the message of the stories narrated in the Qurân, one of which being that which is introduced by the contemporary Muslim scholar named Aḥmad Khalâf Allâh. He is a specialist in the science of the story of the Qurân, as it were. This paper deals with this man and his new approach in understanding such story. It highlights the background of the man and the intellectual environment that forced him to offer his new approach. Speaking of stories in the Qurân as works of arts rather than as history, the man is considered unique in his own right. The paper slightly compares him to other scientists such as Muhammad Abduh, Fakr al-Dîn al-R?zî and al-Naysâbûrî and found that his approach is capable of addressing many problematic issues in the Qurân as far as stories are concerned, such as (1) the problem of inconsistence in the narration of the stories, (2) the notion of freedom of expression in the Qurân, and (3) the fact that the Qurân does entertain the idea of myth (asâtîr). The paper dwells into these three issues.

Abstract

This article deals with the issue of religious pluralism in the view of the leading authorities within Muhammadiyah. The paper argues that the scholars of the organization develop a unique view of religious pluralism in line with the vision of the founding fathers. Apart from some ?discursive distortion? that these scholars might have undergone in the process of developing the discourse, their view deserves some appreciation for its depth and originality. The paper tries to show that there is indeed a tension between the cadres of the organization on the problem at hand. To dwell into this tension, the paper distinguishes between two major groups within the organization, namely that which accepts the notion of religious pluralism, and that which rejects it. The former includes such well-known scholars as Syafii Maarif, Amin Abdullah, Abdul Munir Mulkhan, and Moeslim Abdurrahman, whereas the latter includes the preachers and mosque-activists. Apart from these two groups, the paper will also look at the particular role that the Muhammadiyah?s Youth Movement has played in discourse-development among the members of the organization. Hence, the areas that the paper will cover include those that have been well-represented by the most admitted elements of the organization.

Abstract

The object of this study is Islam in Dayak communities; a subject that is rarely being studied. It tries to expose some interesting facts about Islam in these isolated communities. Many have hitherto thought that the Dayak communities are primitive with no particular affiliation to any formal religion. This paper tries to show the reverse. The truth is that these communities do even have reasonably developed view of Islam especially that which has to do the problem of tolerance and social life. The basic premise that this paper adopts is that a practice is form of paradigm; the way a particular society performs social life reflects their orientation of religious understanding. Hence, although the Dayak communities do not have paradigmatic understanding of Islam?in the strictest sense of the word?they do nonetheless have a practical discourse that emerge out of their unique and perhaps simple understanding of their religion. Relevant to the study of this object is the issue of community identity and how this issue is related to the religious identity. Hence, the paper is interested in exposing the tension between the two identities in the context of the Dayak communities in West Kalimantan.

Abstract

Samâ in Tasawuf has been a very important element in the dissemination of this spiritual dimension of Islam. Yet, it has received very little both from the practitioners of Tasawuf and its intellectuals. This paper tries to expose this simply in a hope to make it heard in the academic and popular circle. Here, Samâ is not only understood as a form of music, as many would do, but also as an art of listening of which music is certainly part. The paper will explore the meaning and definition of this term, putting emphasis on its many-faceted function in the formation and development of ones soul and spirituality. It is argued that soul is musical and artistic. Using art and music to talk to soul is therefore the proper way and means. The paper will also try to show that Samâ is also an indispensable part of spiritual method to reach and know God. Knowledge of God in other words, can be gained through this practice. Hence, Samâ is treated not only as a form of entertainment, but also a kind of practical epistemology.

Abstract

This article speaks of the dynamics of the Nahdlatul Wathan Pesantren by analyzing its spiritual, social and cultural capitals. The complex nature of the relationship between one capital and another and how this relationship has become the source of the physical and academic development, is in itself an interesting issue to explore. But the Pesantren is not only the product of this relationship. It is also the product of the system that its leaders have built. The paper tries to analyze these dynamics and the changes it has gone through by employing the social, capital and educational theories. To arrive at the objective conclusion, the paper treats the Pesantren as a social system in which triadic relationship between structure, ideology, and culture is found. As a social system, the Pesantren has also to consider the external forces which it is certainly part of. But it is exactly here that the Pesantren?and any social system in that matter?will find itself in a serious dilemma. How the Pesantren will deal with the external forces will be also the issue that the paper is interested to discuss, albeit briefly.

Abstract

The basic argument that this paper tries to prove is that, education can be counter-productive to the most important value of humanity if it is run inappropriately. Given that value can be produced?in this modern time?by telecommunication and information technology, education cannot turn a blind eye on it. By implication, education cannot ignore modernity. It is this problem that this paper is concerned with. The paper is interested in discussing the idea of transformative education by relating it to many sources and factors of transformation. Modernity is certainly one of those. The paper?borrowing UNESCO?understands education as simply the learning to know, the learning to do, to be, and to live together. Consequently, education is all about adapting oneself to the environment in which he/she lives. It is in this context that education cannot escape modernity, for modernity has become the very part of human life and environment. And it is only through modernity?this paper argues?that education can be meaningful at least in democratic terms.

Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to portray Islam as a paradigm of higher religious education. This paper is a result of a long research initially aimed at finding new perspective on the development of teaching and learning process in Indonesia. The paper finds that the Holy Qur??n is ample with references on education at all level. It is actually a book of education. The history of Islam has shown that the system, method, and materials of education in the Islamic world are all derived from it. It is this that the paper is interested to discuss. In doing so, it takes into account the conventional distinction between the religious and natural science as far as education is concerned. While the Qur??n does not make a clear-cut distinction between the two sciences, the difference between the two does serve as a meaningful entry?at least methodologically?into the world of education. The paper goes on to classify some Islamic universities in Indonesia along the line of this distinction. It finds that some of these universities believe in this distinction, while others do not. This belief will in turn shape the way these universities design their vision and carry on their mission.

Abstract

There is no doubt that the problem of environment has become the most formidable issue faced by human being in the modern history. The danger imposed by the environmental crisis is much greater than the danger of any forms of war. This crisis has thus become the greatest enemy of humanity. The level and extent of the danger requires equally a great effort to address and tackle it. It is here that this paper tries to contribute. It attempts to offer an Islamic perspective of environment and its conservation. The paper is convinced that Islam is rich with perspectives on this issue. It therefore, introduces the many theories and views on environment that the sciences of Islam have spoken about. It brings into discussion the view of the science of theology (kalam), jurisprudence (fiqh) and sufism ?(tasawuf) on environment. Each of these sciences is discussed in relation to the others, as well as in the context of what the paper calls fiqh lingkungan (the jurisprudence of environment). The idea that underlines the paper is thatthese sciences are?generally speaking?concerned with the idea of personal and collective responsibility; an idea that already has a direct relevance to the problem of environment.
