Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of temperature variation of electrical current of the workpiece and the cutting rate of EDM drilling.This study is experimental design, the independent variable used is electrical current with variation of 8,5A, 12,5A, 18A, 25A, and 36A. . While the dependent variable is the temperature of the workpiece and cutting rate. Specimens used are made of steel ST 37. Electrodes used were copper (Cu) and the fluid used was kerosene. The result of this study showed that the higher the electric current, increasing temperature of workpiece from 53.1 ° C to 119.9 ° C. The value of cutting rate has increased from 16.9805 to 40.7158 mm3/mnt mm3/mnt.Keywords: EDM Drilling, electrical current, temperature of workpiece, cutting rate.

Abstract

The shrinkage and porosity is the casting failures which is often found in the casting products especially aluminum alloys. That failure is happen because the liquid metals cooling processes is not uniform or there is pit-fall gasses. The shrinkage and porosity significationcould reduce material mechanics characteristic significantly. The controlling parameters of the vibration the metals solidifications is implicated to the improvement of aluminum alloys casting products qualities.The objective of this experiment research is to compare the properties on castability, formability, and sub-surface defect on a piece duralumin cast of permanent mold casting. Low pressure mold cavity is an independent variable and fluidity, ductility, porosity are dependent variables, and pouring temperature is a control parameter which is plant in this research design. The research conclusion is while the pressure decrease on cavity would increase castability, ductility, and could reduced the sub-surface defect on duralumin casting.Keywords: fluidity, liquid duralumin, low pressure, solidification, sub-surface defect

Abstract

The process of Hot Dipped Galvanizing (HDG) is done in this study in order to cover steel AISI 1010. This study is aimed at investigating the influence of the variation of roughness level of specimen towards the layer thickness and the porosity of the hot dipped galvanizing of steel AISI 1010. The level of roughness of the specimen is obtained from grinding on grid 100, 500, 800, and 1000. This process causes difference in the roughness of the surface which is measured by using the Surface Roughness Test. The controlled variable is dipping temperature of 480oC. The time of hot dipped galvanizing is 6 minutes, while the time of grinding is 3 minutes. The test done in this study is non destructive test with spray test. The result showed that the porosity increased as the function of the roughness.Keywords: hot dipped galvanizing, spray test, porosity, surface roughness.

Abstract

to aluminum properties that make difficulty to produced good well joints.To overcome this problem,in this study,chamfer angles were used on both contact surfaces of friction welding specimens. Used chamfer angles were 15 0,30 0 45 0, 60 0 and 75 0, variation of upset load were 157 kgf, 185 kgf and 213 kgf. Specimen were friction welded with rotational speed of 1600 rpm, compressive force of 123 kgf for 120 seconds. Then porosity testing and tensile strength testing were performed. Result showed that tensile strength of friction welding joint becomes higher with decreasing of chamfer angel and increasing of upset load. Specimen with chamfer 15 0 and upset load of 213 kgf has maximum tensile strength of 140,45 MPa. Specimen with chamfer angel 75 0 and upset loading of 213 kgf has the smallest porosity of 0,21 %. Abstract

Natural ventilation should be regarded to maintain room air condition with respect to health and satisfaction of people in the room. Outside air flow into the room, so air exchanges occur. Principally natural air exchange is caused by the different between pressure inside and outside the room, as a result of thermal and velocity factors.The study is conducted experimentally. The influence of air velocity and direction of air to the room air condition are studied by observation on a model placed in a wind tunnel. The model was scaled 1 : 10 to the prototype. The study was conducted using velocity of flow air variation (1 m/s, 2 m/s, 3 m/s, 4 m/s, 5 m/s, 6 m/s and 7 m/s) and the angle direction of flow (0o, 10o and 15o). The result of the study shows that velocity and direction of air flow determine air condition in the room indicated by air circulation, heat energy exhausted by the circulated air, and ventilation coefficient. The higher heat absorption was occurred for velocity of 7 m/s and direction of flow 15o, 10o and 0o subsequently.Keywords: natural ventilation, air flow velocity, direction of flow.

Abstract

The objective this research is to investigate the effect of microwave irradiation power on the combustion characteristics of Jatropha curcas oil. Jatropha Curcas oil is one of alternative fuel. Some advantages of this oil are environmentally friendly, not included in food which can be consumed and renewable. But it can not be use directly because it has a long chemical chain with several double bonds and the viscosity and flash point are very high. One method to improve the combustion characteristics of Jatropha curcas oil, is to irradiate this oil with microwaves. This is due to the energy of microwaves can be absorbed by water, fats and sugars that can affect the Jathropa Curcas oil. The microwave frequency used is 2.45 GHz. Microwave irradiation power is given to the jatropha oil are 119 watt, 252 watt, 385 watt, 539 watt and 700 watt, and the time given 15 minute. And droplet diameter used is 1.5 - 2 mm. From this research was found that microwave can change the viscosity, visualization and dimension of the flame, increase the burning rate, percentage of microexplosion, accelerate the appearance and prolong the duration of microexplosion.Keywords: microwave irradiation, combustion characteristic,droplet

Abstract

Content energy of biogas is not less than energy derived from petroleum, horse manure can be used as a substrate for producing biogas. A substrate in horse manure bacteria containing framer metan which is in the animal body ruminants. Temperature is one of the important factors that affect on fermentation process. The aim of study was to find characterization production and composition content biogas from horse manure on condition temperature mesophilic (35ºC) and thermophilic (55ºC). Both of digester are running simultaneously by fermentation process for 15 days. The results obtained from the condition that generated the biogas production of thermophilic higher than the condition of mesophilic and conditions without heating. Biogas production optimum of each digester generated on day 8 for thermophilic conditions, day 10 for mesophilic conditions and day 11 for the conditions without heating. The highest result of biogas production was in thermophilic conditions (0.1411 kg). The highest percentage of methane gas production (CH4) that produced by the thermophilic digester conditions (59.8%).Keywords: biogas, mesophilic, thermophilic, horse manure.

Abstract

Waterwheel is a means to change the water energy into mechanical energy in the form of torque on the wheel shaft. Working waterwheel by the large flow and high utilization of water falls. Today the water wheel still has a small efficiency when compared to water turbines that exist at the moment. Therefore, it still needs further research to improve the efficiency of the water wheel. The purpose of the study is to determine the performance of the blade thickness variation waterwheel flat blade type. In this study, using a kind of overshot waterwheel with a thickness variation of different blades of 0.3; 0.6; 0.9; and 1.2 cm and a water capacity of 10-20 m3/hr. Furthermore be obtained shaft power and efficiency of the water wheel. By using statistical analysis showed that the shaft power and efficiency is influenced by variations in thick blade. Abstract

The study looked at the kinematic analysis of mechanism design cam - follower roller symmetrical with simulations. After designing the geometry of the observed variable cam is cam base circle radius, radius circle tangent, the other constant. With mathematical equations to model the radial displacement, radial velocity, acceleration and jerk radial follower, then made subsequent mathematical tabulations of results generated graph of displacement, velocity, acceleration and jerk of the cam angle swivel. The result is the kinematics characteristic, its maximum on the radius of the circle tangent to the largest and smallest radius circle.Keywords: cam, follower, roller, base circle, the circle tangent, radial displacement, acceleration, jerk.
