Abstract

Feed availability is an important factor in increasing livestock productivity, especially in areas with limited land and low soil fertility. Pakchong grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Thailand) is a high-quality forage with good growth potential, but its optimal production requires proper soil nutrient management. This study aims to evaluate the effect of compost application derived from Melastoma malabathricum L. agricultural waste on the growth of Pakchong grass. The study was conducted from July 2024 to April 2025 at the UPTD-PPT Livestock and Animal Health Service in Bengkulu Province, using a randomized block design with four compost dose levels, namely 0 (control), 10, 20, and 30 tons/ha, each with three replicates. The variables observed included plant height, leaf width, stem diameter, and number of tillers measured at the first and second harvests. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that the application of Melastoma malabathricum L. compost at all doses had no significant effect (P>0.05) on all growth variables of Pakchong grass at both harvest times. However, all variables increased numerically from the first to the second harvest, especially at higher compost doses. This indicates that Melastoma malabathricum L. compost plays a role in improving soil conditions and supporting the vegetative growth of Pakchong grass, although its effect is gradual and not yet significant in a relatively short observation period. Therefore, this compost has the potential to be used as an alternative for long-term sustainable fertilization in environmentally friendly forage production systems.

Abstract

[THE POTENTIAL OF Trichoderma harzianum AND Trichoderma viride AS BIODEGRADATION AGENTS FOR FUNGICIDE RESIDUES CONTAINING THE ACTIVE INGREDIENT MANCOZEB]. Repeated use of fungicides containing the active ingredient mancozeb has the potential to leave residues in agricultural environments and suppress the activity of non-target soil microorganisms. This study aimed to assess the potential and determine the differences between the fungi Trichoderma viride and Trichoderma harzianum in degrading fungicides containing the active ingredient mancozeb in vitro. The study was conducted at the Plant Pathology Laboratory and the Pesticide Toxicology Laboratory, Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Brawijaya University, from May 13 to October 30, 2025. The study employed an experimental design using a completely randomized design. Isolates of T. harzianum and T. viride were purified on PDA medium, identified macroscopically and microscopically, and then propagated on PDB medium. The test was conducted by growing the isolates on PDB medium containing mancozeb at concentrations of 0; 0.5; 1; 1.5; and 2 g/L for 10 days. The parameters observed included Trichoderma biomass and the colony diameter of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides in the bioassay as indicators of residue toxicity. The data were analyzed using ANOVA, followed by a 5% DMRT. The results showed that increasing mancozeb concentration reduced the biomass of both fungi but did not completely inhibit their growth. T. viride produced 0.40 g of biomass in the control and 0.21 g at 2 g/L, while T. harzianum produced 0.48 g in the control and 0.23 g at 2 g/L. The bioassay test showed an increase in the diameter of C. gloeosporioides on media treated with Trichoderma compared to those without Trichoderma. The highest difference in diameter occurred at a concentration of 2 g/L, namely 42.5% for T. viride and 43.5% for T. harzianum. Thus, both Trichoderma species are tolerant to mancozeb and have the potential to reduce its residual toxicity, with a tendency for higher efficacy in T. harzianum under limited in vitro testing conditions.

Abstract

Shallots are an economically important horticultural crop widely consumed by Indonesian consumers, and the increasing demand for shallots indicates that this commodity has strong potential for sustainable development. The production potential of shallots can be enhanced through the application of potassium and magnesium fertilizers. This study aimed to increase shallot production through the application of potassium and magnesium fertilizers at appropriate dosage levels. This study was a factorial experiment arranged in a Randomized Block Design (RBD). The first factor was the dosage of potassium fertilizer, consisting of four levels: 0, 75, 150, and 225 kg/ha. The second factor was the dosage of magnesium fertilizer, consisting of four levels: 0, 125, 250, and 375 kg/ha. Each treatment combination was replicated three times, resulting in a total of 48 experimental units. The results of the study showed that potassium fertilizer treatment of 150 kg/ha had a significant effect on plant height (44.1 cm), plant weight (73.7 g), bulb diameter (2.52 cm), fresh bulb weight (38.3 g), and dry bulb weight (27.5 g). Meanwhile, magnesium fertilizer treatment of 250 kg/ha had a significant effect on plant height (46.2 cm), plant weight (83 g), bulb diameter (2.61 cm), bulb length (3.76 cm), fresh bulb weight (44.3 g), and dry bulb weight (31.6 g). The interaction between potassium fertilizer at 75 kg/ha and magnesium fertilizer at 375 kg/ha showed a significant effect on the number of leaves (23.7 leaves), number of tillers per clump (5.7 tillers), and number of bulbs (7 bulbs). These findings suggest that the combined application of potassium at 150 kg/ha and magnesium at 250 kg/ha is recommended as an effective fertilization strategy to enhance shallot growth and yield.
