Abstract

The objectives of this study were evaluate the dietary turmeric powder and swangi fish meal onsize of muscle fiber diameter and fat tissue score of major pectorales and semimembranosus of quailmeat. Research was conducted based on 2x3 of factorial completely randomized design, in which thefirst factor was 2 types of diet, i.e. RA : standard diet; RB : 85% standard diet + 15% swangi fish meal,and the second factor was 3 levels of period time of turmeric powder addition, i.e. P0 : without turmericpowder; P1 : turmeric powder 54 mg/quail/day was given since quail age 210 days old; P2 : turmericpowder 54 mg/quail/day was given since quail age 14 days old. Difference of means between treatmentgroups were analyzed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test in 95% significance level. The results showedthat combined treatment of tumeric powder with RA (P0 : 2.33 μm; P1 : 3.06 μm; P2 : 2.98 μm) and RB(P0 : 2.22 μm; P1 : 3.12 μm; P2 : 2.92 μm) increased (P<0.05) muscle fiber diameter on majorpectorales significantly. Muscle fiber diameter on semimembranosus were increased (P<0.05) bycombined treatment of tumeric powder with RA (P0 : 2.83 μm; P1 : 3.50 μm; P2 : 3.24 μm) and RB (P0= 2.85 μm; P1 = 3.28 μm; P2 = 3.33 μm). In conclusion, combined treatment of RA (standard diet) andRB (diet with Swangi fish meal) increased (P<0.05) the size of muscle fiber diameter in majorpectorales and semimembranosus.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine socio-economic factors that influence milkconsumption and propensity to routine milk consuming in a household that have children in growing agein both urban and rural area of Yogyakarta Special Province. Numbers of respondent were 122households in urban area and 102 in rural area. Survey method was used to collect data usingquestionnaires presented to respondents. The data were analyzed quantitatively using a log linearmultiple regression and binomial logistic regression models. Results of the research showed that milkprice and mother’s education background were highly significant factors in determining the milkconsumption expenditure. Individually, the income was not significant factor. Furthermore, urbanhousehold group with higher mother’s education and household income were different significantly withthe rural one. A number of children who were less than 12 years old had significantly greater propensityto consume milk routinely. The program to increase milk consumption for children in growing ageshould be focused on improving the knowledge of mothers in low income communities especially inrural areas accompanied with required skills to get employment opportunities and extra cash income.

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of different insoluble non-starchpolysaccharides (NSP) sources supplementation at levels 0, 20, 40, 60 g/kg on performance anddigestive tract development of young broilers (doc-21 d). Results showed that there were no interactionsbetween insoluble NSP sources and levels at any variable measured. Only levels of insoluble NSP hadsignificant effect. Young broilers fed mash basal diet supplemented with 6% insoluble NSP decreasedbody weight gain (P<0.05) and impaired gain-to-feed ratio (P<0.01). Diets did not have a significanteffect on feed intake (FI), in addition to the relative weight of gizzard, jejunum-ileum, caeca, andpancreas. Levels of NSP affected the weight of gastrointestinal digesta with jejunal-ileal digesta wasfound to be the highest (P<0.01) in 6% insoluble NSP supplementation. Dry matter of jejunal-ilealdigesta and excreta moisture also did not significantly affected by diets (P≥0.05). The present studydemonstrated that the insoluble NSP can be supplemented to young broilers diet up to 4%. It is likelythat increased performance of young broilers supplemented with insoluble NSP up to 4% was due toincrease FI and a better gut environment. The supplementation of insoluble NSP did not produce strongimpact considering that the diets were given in mash form.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to identify the Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitorypeptide derived from Kacang goat meat protein hydrolysate. Kacang goat meat loin section washydrolyzed with pepsin, trypsin and chymotrypsin. Protein hydrolysate of Kacang goat meat was thentested the protein concentration and ACE inhibitory activity. ACE inhibitory peptide of the proteinhydrolysate was purified through several steps of purification by column SEP-PAK Plus C18 Cartridgeand RP-HPLC using a Cosmosil column 5PE-SM, 4.6 x 250 mm. The sequence of amino acid of ACEinhibitory peptide was identified by amino acid sequencer. The results showed that amino acidssequence of ACE inhibitory peptide derived from protein hydrolysate of Kacang goat meat was leu-thrglu-ala-pro-leu-asn-pro-lys-ala-arg- asn-glu-lys. It had a molecular weight (MW) of 1581 and occurredat the position of 20th to 33rd residues of b-actin of goat meat protein (Capra hircus). The ACE inhibitoryactivity (IC50) of the peptide was 190 mg/mL or 120 mM.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to identify growth hormone (GH) genes genotype in selectedAceh cattle at Indrapuri’s Breeding and Forage Centre (IBFC) of Aceh Cattle. Fourty one cattleconsisting of 21 male and 20 female cattle were used in this study. The genomic DNA was extractedfrom blood using Sambrook et al. (1989) methods. Polymerase Chain Reaction - Restriction FragmentLength Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and mehod of sequencing was used to detect MspI site on GH gene.Based on sequencing results, it can be concluded that all cattle were monomorphism. The frequency ofTT genotype were 1.00 and same as T allele frequency. The transition of C (cytosine) into T (thymine)on 1548 bp caused the lost of restriction site.

Abstract

Yeast and curcumin of C. xanthorrhiza Roxb could be added into concentrate containingpolyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) to improve milk fatty acid quality of dairy goat. There were fivetreatments (PD0: PUFA- diet with no additive; PDA: PUFA- diet with 3 Asifit tablets; PDY: PUFA- dietwith 5 g yeast; PDC: PUFA- diet with 20 g curcuma powder; and PDM: PUFA- diet with a mixture of 5g yeast and 20 g curcuma powder) applied onto 20 dairy goats during late lactation (4.6 ± 0.55 monthsof lactation). The treatments were allocated according to a completely completely randomized blockdesign. Results demonstrated that diet containing PUFA supplemented with 5 g yeast and 20 g curcumawere high in total fatty acid, medium chain fatty acid (MCFA), and long chain fatty acid (LCFA). Milkof goats with this treatment showed high in mono unsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and MUFA; while itwas low in short chain fatty acid (SCFA), n6/n3 ratio, and atherogenicity index. These qualities wereoptimally considered good in terms of healthier product. Therefore, the PUFA- diet with 5 g yeast and20 g curcuma was a reasonable choice to be applied for dairy goat.

Abstract

The study was aimed to determine the optimal time to evaluate the maximum numbers of swollensperm after expose to hypo-osmotic solution for testing membrane integrity in fresh garut ram semen. Atotal of 24 ejaculate samples from eight sexually mature garut ram were collected using artificial vagina.After macroscopic evaluation, 10 μL undiluted semen was gently mixed in each of the 2 mL hypoosmoticsolution and incubated at 37oC for 1 hour. Two hundred of coil and non-coiled sperm wereobserved from five different fields every 15 minutes. Results demonstrated that the maximumpercentage of coiling sperm positive to HOS test was at 30 minutes and no differences among 8 garutrams used.

Abstract

This study was to examine the effect of fermentation, inoculation, and the proportion of carbonsources on the quality of organic fertilizer made from fermentation of liquid waste collected fromchicken slaughterhouse in Jakarta area. The parameters being tested included fermentation, microbialinoculation, and carbon source proportion. The observations were made after three weeks offermentation on the color, odor, pH, contents of elements C, NH4, NO3, total-N, P2O5, K2O andpathogenic microbes (Fusarium sp., Coletotrichum sp., Salmonella sp. and Eschercia coli). The fertilizerwere implemented for green chinese cabbage in six locations. It was found that the aerobic fermentationsystem combined with inoculation of the decomposer microbes (Lactobacillus spp.) and the addition20% (v/v) of a carbon source was the most appropriate method of fermentation in the production ofliquid organic fertilizers from liquid waste of chicken slaughterhouse. The quality of the fertilizer whichis based on physical, chemical and biological characteristics and crop responses still less than the similarcommercial fertilizer (EM4). Nevertheless, the nitrogen and phosphor contents of this liquid fertilizer(92,000 ppm and 143,000 ppm) were significantly higher (P<0.05) than the EM4 (0.07 and 3.22 ppm).

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to 1) identify the size and shape of cranium of three breeds ofCentral Java local goats (Kejobong, Kacang and Ettawa Grade), 2) examine the effectiveness ofmultivariate analysis of cranial measurement and 3) estimate genetic distance among three local breedsof goat. The material used was cranium from female Kejobong, Kacang and Ettawa Grade goats, agedfor about 4 years (determined on the basis based on eruption of teeth), the number of specimens were30; 10 and 10, respectively. Twenty seven cranial measurements used to data observed, multivariateanalysis of GLM, CANDISC, PRINCOMP and DISCRIM were used to analysis all data observed.UPGMA of MEGA 5 was used to illustrate the distance among breeds. Results showed that EttawaGrade tended to show the largest size, followed by Kejobong and Kacang goats. Kejobong goat showedsmall cranium size with large cranium shape. Different things was found in Kacang goats in whichcranium size and cranium shape are relatively small. Kacang breed showed the smaller size (PrincipalComponent I or PC-1 = -2) compared to Ettawa Grade (PC-I = 3) and Kejobong goat (PC-I = -1).Analysis for classifying three breeds of local goat resulted in high accuracy (100%) as indicated by 0%of erroneous level (0%). Kejobong goat was close to in the genetic relationship to Kacang goatcompared to Ettawa Grade goat.
