Abstract

The experiment is aimed to develop a model to control the air temperature of drying chamber during drying of Chilli using Logical Fuzzy Control (LFC).  The temperature characteristic of three dryer subsystem, namely the drying chamber, the commodity (chilli), and the heater, is predicted by a mathematical models based on heat and mass balances.  Mathematical model obtained were then solved by numerical analysis using a Finite Different Euler Method, followed by simultaneous solution by a method of Gauss Jordan.  Borland Delphi 5.0 program and Celeron 566 MHz and RAM 256 MB processor was used to make a simulation program. The control of drying chamber temperature is carried out by adjustment of the energy given to the heater.  The degree of deviation to the set temperature of the drying chamber and the corrected value were then used as inputs to LFC.  As an output of the LFC is the amount of energy supplied to the heater.  The input was divided into three groups of set i.e.  3.5 and 7.  The function of the input element is a symmetrical triangle function, while the one of the output element is a fuzzy singletone. It was found that the determination value (R2) of the drying chamber, the commodity and the heater were 0.65, 0.62 and 0.67 respectively with the respective RMSE value of 2.2, 2.8 and 2.3.  A set of input of 7 was found to give the best LFC as compared with other sets of input. The control of drying chamber temperature using LFC for drying of chilli is best conducted in the range of set point of 45 – 55 oC.  At a temperature of 45 oC for 72 hours, the moisture content of the chilli was reduced from about 80 % to 32.9 % wet basis with an consumption of energy of 547.02 kWh.   Keywords: Simulation, Logical Fuzzy Control, Finite Different Method, Gauss Jordan Method

Abstract

The water retention in the soil is determined by distribution of soil particle measurement.  The growth of the plants are influenced by the soil characters such as the structure, strength of the soil it self, the soil resitance to water The retention of the water can be estimated exactly by using the distribution data of particle measurement. So far, the determination of the water retention curve used is by using pressure plate, which is set in any pF, so it needs longer time. Model of the water retention characteristic is based on fractal model of soil structure. Up to now, soil structure is difficult to be quantitative or on the other hand, it is stated in qualitative, but by using fractal theory of soil structure, it can be quantitative. Fractal approach to set the water retention characteristic is based on water structure named Pore Solid Fractal (PSF). The model shows water retention characteristic related on water structure parameter, which means not only use the distribution of soil solid measurement related with model scaling. The calculation results using mass and measure are obtained the value of fractal mass dimension (Dm) which is estimated for alfisol = 2.555 ± 0.454, alluvial soil = 2.403 ± 0.332  and vertisol = 2.624 ± 0.419.  The corve of water resistance model is obtained in good result for alfisol with D value of 2.71, alluvial soil with D value of 2.735, and vertisol with D value of 2.878.  Based on the mechanical soil analysis, it could get the alfisol volume weight = 1.248 gr/cm2, alluvial soil = 1.107 gr/cm2, and vertisol = 2.63 gr/cm2, alfisol specific weigt = 2.915 gr/cm3, alluvial soil = 2.42 gr/cm3, and vertisol 2.63 gr/cm3, and alfisol porosity = 0.487m3/m3, alluvial soil = 0.501 m3/m3 and vertisol 0.605 m3/m3 Vertisol has the biggest D value, while alfisol has the smallest one.  Vertisol has the biggest water composition value, while alvisol has the smallest one.  It’s because there is much pliable composition in vertisol.  The D value correlation is in line with the water composition, i.e. the higher of water composition, the higher of D value.   Key Words :  fractal theory, model of soil structure, vertisol, alfisol

Abstract

Various factors need to consider in running an agriculture system sustainable.  The objective of the study was to determine the most important factor on the farming decision making to run a sustainable agriculture system. Descriptive and inferential analytic methods were chosen as the research methodology. The data collected includes several variables covering economical, ecological, human resources and social aspect. A questionnaire was used as a tool to collect the prime data, and then followed by an evaluation of the multiple regressions in order to know the relationship level amongst economy, ecology, human resource and social variable to farming decision making. The result shows that the relationship amongst the variables may be expressed in a linear mathematical model as follows: Farming Dec. Making = - 0.585 + 1.01 Economy + 1.08 Ecology + 0.969 HR + 1.02 Social. The equation model indicates that the ecological variable is to be the most dominant factor in running a sustainable agriculture. Therefore, such variables must be defined to ensure that the agriculture system is run sustainable.   Key Words: farming decision making, sustainable agriculture

Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out the effect of water content on the soil friability and to determine the appropriate soil water content for tillage. The soil samples were taken from Balai Benih Induk Palawija, Bedali, Lawang, Malang Regency and measurements of parameters were carried out at the Laboratory of Agricultural Power and Machinery, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Brawijaya University, Malang from June until July 2002. The parameters used are the compression strength of soil taken from a number of soil volumes and the water contents. The results indicated that the soil strength was significantly affected by the water content as well as a combination of the water content and the volumes of soil aggregates. The reduction of volumes of soil aggregates due to decreasing of soil water content caused an increase in the soil strength. The value of soil strength ranges from 7,19 kPa to 166,39 kPa. The friability of Bedali soil was achieved in the range of soil water content: 20 – 26 % with a soil friability index (k) of 0,25-0,27.
