Abstract

Fruit fly is serious pest that reduce yield and fruit quality in Cucurbita moschata. Cucurbita moschata is an important food and cash crop. Development of eco-friendly strategies to reduce the effects of fruit fly damage is therefore important in ensuring global food security. The present study was carried out to evaluate the potential of combinations of trap colour and indigenous fruit juices, i.e., Sclerocarya birrea and Strychnos spinosa, to attract fruit flies to the traps. A field experiment was laid out as a 4 x 3 factorial design with three replicates of each of the 12 treatments arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design. The first factor was the type of attractant and it consisted of four levels, i.e., Strychnos spinosa juice, Sclerocarya birrea juice, sugar and water. The second factor was trap colour and it consisted of three levels, viz., red, yellow and green. The number of fruit flies trapped was counted and classified into different fruit fly genera. The results showed that the number of fruit flies attracted by a combination of sugar and the three trap colours was statistically (P < 0.05) similar to number of fruit flies attracted by a combination of Strychnos spinosa juice and the three trap colours and a combination of Sclerocarya birrea juice and the three trap colours. Bactrocera spp has the highest number of flies trapped, with a grand mean of 39.9, followed by Ceratitis spp (15.5) and Drosophila melanogaster had the least number of flies trapped (9.94). It was concluded that Strychnos spinosa and Sclerocarya birrea juices can be used as alternative attractants to sugar for baiting and trapping fruit flies with traps painted yellow, green and red.

Abstract

Anthracnose is a fungal disease that severely affects mango (Mangifera indica L.) production globally. In Zimbabwe, mango production is a source of household nutrition and income from informal markets but there has been limited information on the fungal pathogens related to anthracnose in the main production areas. Lack of local baseline data limits proper diagnosis and the development of disease control measures. The main objective of this study was to morphologically characterize fungal isolates that were associated with anthracnose symptoms on mango fruits and leaves, which were collected from different orchards in the Mutoko District of Zimbabwe. Symptomatic samples from various trees were randomly collected in the different orchards. Pieces of tissue were taken from the edge of the lesions and surfaces sterilized, and were inoculation on potato dextrose agar. Colonies of the fungi that appeared were re-cultured to obtain pure culture. The isolates exhibited different colony morphology but mostly they produced grey to dark colonies of cottony to velvety textures. Based on morphology, the isolates were considered members of the Colletotrichum genus; nevertheless, species identification by molecular means was not performed. Through this research, the morphological characteristics of the anthracnose, associated Colletotrichum isolates from the Mutoko District were initially documented. This evidence calls for molecular and pathogenicity analyses to identify the species so that disease management can be effective.

Abstract

Smallholder farmers in semi-arid sub-Saharan Africa depend largely on both formal and informal seed systems, although the contribution of various seed types towards land cultivation remains unclear. The objectives of the study were to evaluate farmer knowledge of storage pests and soil-borne diseases, seed sourcing systems, and perceived efficiency of traditional seed storage practices for cereals and legumes in Lupane District, Zimbabwe. A questionnaire survey was administered to 400 farmers across ten wards between October 2022, and March 2023 and October 2023. A multistage sampling method was adopted in ward and farmer selection. Findings indicated that despite the fact that 97.8% of respondents used seed through government input schemes and 98.8% used commercial seed at least once, the quantities were generally low for planting. As a result, most land cultivated was planted with farm-saved seed. In relation to area planted, farm-saved seed that is traditionally treated comprised 45% of land cultivated, untreated farm-saved seed comprised 42%, while commercial seed comprised only 13%. Economic factors were the key factor in the choice of farm-saved seed. Storage crop pests (maize, rice, and cowpea weevils), were well known, while there was limited knowledge on soil-borne fungal diseases. Holes and frass were identified as damage symptoms in all crops. Combretum imberbe ashes was identified as the most used and preferred traditional seed preservation treatment. Farm-saved seeds were predominant used despite the persistent use of commercial seeds, and there is need for scientific studies of common botanicals used in seed production in semi-arid farming communities.

Abstract

Protecting stored cowpea from Callosobruchus maculatus remains one of the most persistent challenges faced by smallholder farmers, who depend on this staple legume for both nutrition and income. Although several insects attack stored grains, C. maculatus is widely recognized as the most destructive pest of Cowpea, causing rapid quality loss and significant yield reduction. In this study, we investigated the insecticidal, repellent, and synergistic activities of individual and blended essential oils against adult C. maculatus. Fumigation, contact toxicity, and repellency assays were conducted under laboratory conditions (27 ± 2 °C, 65 ± 5% RH, and 12:12 h (L:D) photoperiod) to assess the impact of individual oils and formulated blends on pest mortality and behavior at varying concentrations of 0.2 – 0.5% over  a period of 72 hrs. The oils varied considerably in potency. Ocimum gratissimum consistently emerged as the most effective, showing strong fumigant toxicity (48.87 ± 1.77%) and robust repellent action (100 ± 0%). Ocimum basilicum displayed moderate activity, whereas Citrus limon and Citrus sinensis produced minimal insecticidal effects (2.38 ± 1.65%) at comparable concentrations. Blended formulations, however, performed substantially better than single oils. The binary mixture FM1 exhibited the highest overall efficacy, resulting in rapid and near-total mortality (68.4 ± 1.99%), strong contact toxicity (70.0 ± 2.646%), and complete repellency within 2 hours of exposure period. Synergistic interactions were most evident in FM1, where observed effects exceeded those expected from individual components (SF; 1.94, CI; 0.005). Ternary (FM3) and quaternary (FM4) combinations also improved bioactivity, though to a lesser extent (SF; 1.73, CI; 0.045). These findings demonstrate the promise of Ocimum-based essential oil blends as eco-friendly, synergistic alternatives for protecting stored cowpea.

Abstract

The viruses that infect fungi are called mycoviruses, and they were initially discovered in mushrooms. The prevalence of new mycoviruses has increased due to breakthroughs in sequencing methods. As a result, publicly accessible genomic sources provide access to several mycoviral transcripts. Genomic information alone is insufficient for comprehending the impacts of mycoviruses on their host fungus. Mycovirus can have a variety of phenotypic impacts on its host. For biological characterization, there is a need to determine the nature of the mycovirus, which may be hypovirulent, hypervirulent, or cryptic. Mycoviruses best characteristics are biological control of fungi and therapeutic potential. Currently, there is no standard method used against the mycoviral infection. Given the importance of mycoviral curing, we may prepare the isogenic lines. Single-spore isolation generally yields high success rates and is recommended as a first-choice approach for most fungal; system for the preparation of isogenic lines. In order to obtain reliable results, the study of mycovirology should also employ modern bioinformatics techniques to anticipate virus-specific antiviral properties.

Abstract

Differences in the polarity of solvents used in extraction significantly affect the inhibitory power and types of compounds identified. The aim of this study was to determine the inhibitory effectiveness of clove leaf extract extracted with different solvents, namely methanol (polar) and hexane (non-polar), on the growth of Sclerotium rolfsii fungus. The research methods included: extraction of clove leaf extract with methanol and hexane solvents, and testing the inhibitory power of crude methanol and hexane extracts using the well diffusion method. The effectiveness of clove leaf extract on the growth of S.rolfsii fungal colonies was tested using the colony method and biomass test. The results showed that the inhibitory power of crude clove leaf extract, tested separately with methanol and hexane solvents, each with an inhibition zone diameter of 40 mm (very strong inhibition) and  0 mm (no inhibition). The results extract tests on the growth of S.rolfsii fungal colonies showed that a 2 % methanol extract concentration was able to inhibit 100 % of S.rolfsii fungal colony growth.The results of the activity test of clove leaf methanol extract on the growth of fungal biomass S.rolfsii showed 100 % inhibition at a concentration of  1.5 %. The clove leaf methanol extract showed very strong inhibition, while the hexane extract showed no inhibition against S.rolfsii fungal growth.
