Abstract

The area of Tamansari has a spesific historical background where the original function was for recreation and botanical garden. The growing number of population and its strategic location has changed the function of Tarnansari as high-density residential area, with a density of 535 persons/hectare (2000 figure). In relation with transportation problem is northern part of Bandung which is shown by traffic congestion in Siliwangi and Wastukencana roads, the government has designed a strategic development of fly-over which will pass the Tamansari area as an effort to solve the problem. This strategy is a good momentum for residential area redevelopment through redevelopment of Tamansari area

Abstract

The application of strategic planning style for regional development planning that has been started in Indonesia arises a question: can the style also be applied for urban spatial planning? Some literatures have provided theoretical concepts. in addition, some urban cases in the world have concluded two models of urban spatial strategic planning:  spatial plan goes hand-in- hand cohesively with the regional development strategic plan, and (2) regional development plan acts as umbrella for all other plans including spatial plan. Based on the assessment on these two models, two alternative models for the application of strategic planning for urban spatial planning in Indonesia are proposed.

Abstract

This research considers the utilization of a number of Balinese cultural constants as basis of the development of urban design concepts for producing culturally livable places in the Balinese town of Gianyar. The concept of  'livable place or city' connotes, among other, the need of a 'sense of 'place'. A pluralistic approach, by means of questionnaires and mental map sketching techniques was employed to reveal some cultural constants in the cultural landscapes of a contemporary Gianyar urban setting. This exploration aims at providing a ground for reconnecting urban design proposals with their cultural context, this promoting the spatially expressed localism which originates from the diversity of cultures to ultimately produce 'a sense of place'. The research concludes that to achieve culturally appropriate sense of place, hence a livable town, the design process has to acknowledge finer core cultural constants in the design of  Balinese townscapes: 1) attitude to human being-environment relationship; 2) the concept Of center; 3) attitude to spatial organization and structure; 4) attitude to environmental design and management; and 5) attitude to symbols and meanings. Within the framework of urban design principles and town's identity elements. a series of urban design concepts is composed. Based upoir such concepts, urban spatial organization, structure and form will significantly reflect the Balinese cultural identity.

Abstract

The impact of urban development is the tendency of the shift of urban functions shift to urban fringe area that is called urban sprawl. The phenomenon of urban sprawl in urban fringe area has resulted in land conversion process from agriculture to non-agriculture. Furthermore, this conversion of agriculture land to non-agriculture land will result in settlement desification process in urban fringe area. This process that happens in urban fringe area is a respond to increasing demand of space in urban area. In turn, the spatial transformation will be followed by socio-economic, cultural, and physical environment transformation process.
