Abstract

Here, lessons learned during the development of the CPAP ventilator 'Vent-I', aimed to help COVID-19 patients with breathing difficulties, are presented. Within only weeks, the Vent-I was developed, complying with functionality, safety and reliability requirements and passing the clinical trial. It was then distributed to hospitals all over Indonesia. Two billion rupiahs were raised through crowdfunding within one week. When the project was officially closed, more than one thousand Vent-I devices had been distributed and more than twelve and a half billion rupiahs had been raised. Currently, commercialization and mass production of the device have been started. From this project several lessons can be learned. First and foremost, the spirit of gotong royong"“ sincere collaboration within the community to help each other "“ is still firmly rooted within the people and the society of Indonesia. Noble values, i.e. sincerity, sensitivity and concern about the needs of the community, willingness to serve voluntarily and public trust, made the team dare to try and face failure. The spirit of social entrepreneurship, willingness to listen to the user and collaboration with the relevant authority can accelerate development process. The availability of knowledge and skills that constitute an innovation ecosystem in Bandung, supported by business, social institutions and government, was also a key success factor..

Abstract

Petroleum production can be improved through enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods such as chemical injection. This study focused on sulfonation of methyl ester using SO3 dissolved in oleum compounds (H2SO4.SO3) in a mini-pilot falling film reactor at 70 °C and its application for chemical EOR with ASP flooding. The reactor was equipped with cooling water to facilitate heat transfer in view of the highly exothermic reaction. Biodegradable methyl ester sulfonate, a biosurfactant, was produced from esterification of vegetable oils, palm kernel oil, and coconut oil. The MES products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared testing, which showed S=O and -OH groups peaks, indicating that sulfonation had occurred. The IFT test data showed that the MES from CNO produced the lowest IFT values for light oil and heavy oil, equal to 11.4 mN/m and 10.3 mN/m, respectively. The effect of the MES concentration on the phase behavior was an increase of the IFT value before being applied in ASP flooding, and a decrease after reaching the optimum condition. The EOR core flooding test with the formulated ASP resulted in original oil in place (OOIP) percentages in the range of 12 to 23.5%. The highest acquisition was 23.53% OOIP for an ASP composition of 200 ppm, 0.5%wt, 2800 ppm, respectively.

Abstract

This work is aimed to measure the liquid-liquid equilibria of rice bran oil-fatty acid-aqueous alcohols using fatty acid mixtures derived from rice bran oil as solutes and to calculate the number of equilibrium stages required for the extraction process. Renewable alcohols, ethanol and isopropanol in aqueous form were used as solvents. The liquid-liquid equilibrium data were measured at 25 °C and presented as ternary diagrams. It was found that ethanol gave a lower distribution coefficient than isopropanol. For the same solvent, increasing the water content resulted in a lower distribution coefficient. For the free fatty acid contents of 30% in the feed and of 10% to 2.5% in the raffinate, the minimum solvent-to-feed ratio was found to be in the range of 1 to 5. Using solvent-to-feed ratios from 2 to 4, the number of extraction stages required was in the range of 1 to 8. Based on the minimum solvent-to-feed ratio and number of equilibrium stages, isopropanol was found to be better than ethanol.
