Abstract

A study on butterflies (Rhopalocera) at Tanjung Balai Karimun was conducted from December 2011 to April 2012. The purposes of this study is to know the butterfly species at Tanjung Balai Karimun, Karimun Regency, Riau Archipelago. Butterflies were collected by insect net, cylindrical gauze and baited trap. A total of 42 species of butterflies that belonging 55 subspecies, 32 genera ang eigth families was collected. They were belong to Acraeidae, Amathusiidae, Danaidae, Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, and Satyridae. The highest number of species was found in family of Nymphalidae (15 species, 21 subspecies, 12 genera), and the lowest number of species was found in Acraeidae (Acraea violae Fabricius) and Amathusiidae (two genus, two spesies dan three subspesies). Five species of butterflies in this study have not been found in previous studies from Sumatra. They were Zeuxidia amethystus Butler (Amathusiidae), Euploea crameri C & R. Felder (Danaidae), Arhopala avatha de Niceville (Lycaenidae) and Euthalia mahadeva Fabricius, Lebadea martha Fruhstorfer (Nymphalidae). Keywords: rhopalocera, species, Tanjung Balai Karimun, Riau Archipelago

Abstract

Research about morphological variation of Arachnothera longirostra (Passeriformes, Nectariniidae) on Harapan Rainforest (Jambi), The Biological Education and Research Forest (BERF) and Marapi Mount have been conducted from September 2011 to February 2012. The samples have been collected directly on the field and data were analyzed on Animal Taxonomy Laboratory, Biology Departement, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Andalas University, Padang. Based on the (analysis) result using Kruskall-Wallis Test, the females were found five of nine variation morphological characters and the males were found seven characters. Based on Mann-Whitney U test was found one character that appeared consistenly different to females such as WDTB (Wide Bill), while for males were found two characters such as WDTB (Wide Bill) and LGTR (Long Tarsus). Phenogram obtained by UPGMA analysis showed close relationship between populatiaon of A. longirostra from both of Marapi and HPPB populations. Keywords: morphology, variation, nectariniidae, Arachnothera longirostra

Abstract

Morphometrics study of climbing ferns (Lygodium) in West Sumatra had been conducted from December 2011 to April 2012. This study used survey method and direct observation. The result of this study indicated that four species were identified: Lygodium microphyllum, L. flexuosum, L. longifolium dan L. circinnatum has found in The Biological Education and Research Forest (HPPB), Silokek and Harau. The fertile leaflets of L. microphyllum are deltoid and sterile leaflets are elongatus. The fertile and sterile leaflets of L. flexuosum are elongatus. The number of L. microphyllum leaflets range from 9-12 and L. flexuosum range from 10-13. The fertile leaflets of L. longifolium are palmati-partitus with 1-2 lobed and sterile leaflets are palmatus with 3-4 lobed, then the fertile leaflets of L. circinnatum are palmati-partitus with 2 or 4 lobed and sterile leaflets are palmatus with 4-5 lobed. All of the spesies coulb be classified in to 2 clusters, there were high morphological similarities among spesies in each cluster. Keywords: Lygodium, climbing fern, morphometrics, West Sumatra

Abstract

The study of Balanophoraceae in West Sumatra has been conducted from January to May 2012. This study used observation and direct collection method at seven locations in West Sumatra and continued in Herbarium Andalas University (ANDA). The result indicated that three spesies of Balanophora (B. elongata, B. indica, and B.dioica) were identified. B. elongata has 9 female individuals, B. indica has 2 male individuals and 1 female individual, B. dioica 1 male individual and 1 female individual. The tuber was significant character to distinguish three studied spesies of Balanophora. B. elongata and B. dioica had a branched tuber but no branched tuber was detected in B. indica. The leaf color and the type of inflorescence were also valuable characters to differ between these species. It was assumed that most of the Balanophora species were found in habitat where the precipitation is 2500-5000 mm/year along mountain rain forest in Sumatra. Keywords: spesies, Balanophora, character, habitat, west sumatra

Abstract

The morphometric study of Macaranga Thou. (Euphorbiaceae) leaf was carried out from February to June 2012 at The Biological Education and Research Forest (HPPB), Herbarium ANDA and Plant Taxonomy Laboratory of Biology Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Andalas University, Padang. The survey method was used in this research, the observation and direct collection were performed in the field. The samples were identified based on vegetative characters. The data of the leaf measurements were analyzed by PAST ver. 2.10 programs. It was found six species of Macaranga (M. depressa, M. gigantea, M. hypoleuca, M. javanica, M. tanarius, and M. triloba) and there were identified differentian of characters for each species of Macaranga. The lobes, margo, ratio and types of leaf nervatio used to differentiation. Identification keys based on leaf character could be used to identify Macaranga species. Numerically, species in Macaranga genus could be classified. Keywords: character, Macaranga, morphometric, leaf, HPPB

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find the best concentration of colchicine and soaking time to induce tetraploid plants and to study the growth responses of Andalas somaclone. The colchicine concentrations consist of 0.05, 0.1; 0.15% with soaking time were 72 and 96 hours respectively. The results showed that the concentration of 0.05% colchicine with 96 hours soaking time able to induce highest percentage shoot of Andalas tetraploid (75%). The highest percentage of roots induction and the best timing of root formation were obtained at concentration of 0.05% colchicine with 96 hours soaking time. Keywords: Morus macroura Miq. var macroura, somaclone, growth, chromosomes, colchicine

Abstract

The aim of this research was to study the responses of Andalas somaclone explant and to determine the best concentration of thidiazuron (TDZ) for shoot multiplication. It used completely randomized design (CRD) in factorial with two experimental factors and three replications. The first factor was source of nodal explant; explant without colchicine treatment and explant with colchicine treatment (0,1% for 72 hours immersion time). The second factor was five levels of TDZ which were 0; 0.125; 0.250; 0.375 and 0.500 mg/l. The results showed that all treatment gave life percentage of explant 100%. The best timing of shoot formation were 5.33 day after cultured (dac) from explant without colchicine treatment and 5 dac from explant with colchicine treatment. TDZ 0,500 mg/l from explant without colchicine treatment showed the highest number of shoots (12.67) while TDZ 0.375 mg/l for explant with cholchine treatment (10.67). The highest length of shoot were showed in TDZ 0.125 mg/L from explant without colchicine treatment (32.33 mm) and explant with colchicine treatment (38.33 mm). The length of shoot decreased along increasing of TDZ concentration, while the number of shoot increased along increasing of TDZ concentration. Keywords: Morus macroura Miq. var. macroura, multiplication, thidiazuron, explant, in vitro

Abstract

An inventory of mammalian species at The Biological Education and Research Forest (HPPB) Andalas University was conducted from November 2011 to March 2012. We used six camera traps operated along forest paths where those predicted as regular tracks of the animals. We successfully identified ten species of mammals in which they belong to ten families and six orders. Those identified species were Hylomys suillus, Macaca nemestrina, Manis javanicus, Lariscus insignis, Hystrix brachyura, Ursus malayanus, Panthera tigris sumatrae, Sus scrofa, Tragulus javanicus and Muntiacus muntjak. The two species, Lariscus insignis and Hylomys suillus were new record from this area. Keywords: mammals, camera trap, Biological Education and Research Forest
