Abstract

The following article tries to describe the Twelve Imams’s view about the Prophet’s Companions, quoted from their trusted views. The discussion begins by describing the views of the Companions of Ahlus Sunnah scholar, followed by a view of classic and contemporary Shi’ah Scholar, and ended by a critical analize on Shi’ah sholars’ arguments. This paper is raised as the important position of the Companions in scholarly Ahlus Sunna, because they are the main connectors between the Prophet Muhammad (PBU) with his ummah. In addition, this paper is an answer for the rejection or denial of Shi’ah to the Companions’ narrations. The study results of this paper showed that a majority of the Shi’ah scholars, both classical and contemporary, have a negative view towards Companions. This negative view is the implication of the extreme concept of Imamat, which not based on strong arguments from the Qur’an, Sunnah, and ijma ‘ulama; thus making it weak.

Abstract

Discussion about harmony can not be separated from the discussion of plurality. Plurality or diversity is a fact that must be faced for all communities and reigious people. Each religion has its own experience and the typical way in addressing the plurality. Western Christian society also have a typical story in the face of plurality around them. Cruelty that came from the Church, caused and affected their own experience of looking at something, as well as looking at the plurality and harmony. Surprisingly, this Western worldview plagiarized by the liberal Muslims. Finally, the concepts of harmony in Islam that should be tawhidi based on al-Quran and al-Sunnah turned into a secular by ruling out both. This article explores the stages through by the Western Christian societies in responding the plurality to build harmony. It is important to be clear how the Muslim community should be, whether to follow the ways of the or to explore directly the basic sources of religion, al-Quran and al-Hadith.

Abstract

Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari is the author of the hadith book: al-Jâmi’ al-Shahîh, which is collecting the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and agreed by all Islamic scholars from its day to the present as the most valid and authentic reference book of the Muslims after al-Qur’an. Despite the prestigious position of the book and its author, al-Bukhari apparently got a big test and slanderahead his death. This was because of his thought of Qur’anic words. Al-Bukhari actually just said that word (reading) of al-Qur’an is including human actions, and human being and his deeds are created by God. This word was then concluded logically that Al-Bukhari stated al-Quran readings is creature by God. Sunni scholars, broadly divided into two schools of thought in questioning al-Quran words. Imam Ahmad, experts at hadith and the Hanabilah equated it’s verdict with the opinion of the Qur’an is creature. Meanwhile, al-Bukhari, Thabari, the sunni theologist, and some experts at hadis linked it with af’âlu al-’ibâd.

Abstract

One aspect that was criticized by liberal feminists in Islam is the hadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH. This group accused some hadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH anti to women. They call it misogynistic hadith. Surprisingly, the first pioneer of this discourse is a Muslim woman named Fatima Mernissi. In her book Women and Islam: An Historical and Theological Enquiry, Mernissi has written two sub-chapters examinedthe hadith assumed as misogynistic. This discourse became a serious debate among Muslim scholars. In Islam, fighting for justice and equality for women should be based on the al-Quran and al-Sunnah, so that when one of the sources questioned will rise the restlessness among Muslims. This article tries to study and examine Mernissi’s statement and study about hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH which described as  misogynistic hadith. This needs to be done, so get the correct meaning and wisdom related to the Prophetic traditions.

Abstract

It was a fatal mistake when terrorism equated with the doctrine of jihad in Islam. Terrorism in Arabic word termed as al-Irhab is not taught in the Qur’an. Even in Surah al-Anfal: 60 wrote the word “turhibûna”, but it can’t be used as the argument that terrorism is taught Islam. The word “turhibûna” here is more to frighten the enemy on the battlefield. By studying the turats and contemporary books, this simple paper triesto explore some of the misunderstandings about jihad. Then, those errors will be corrected by refering to the original opinion of the Muslim scholars, which in this paper refered to Ibn Qayyim al-Jawzi’s opinions. The results of the study showed that this misunderstanding lied on the meaning and concept of jihad. As understood by some people that jihad is a war in the path of Allah (fi sabilillah) only. In fact, the realm of jihadis very wide. Ibn Qayyim explained that jihad consists of 13 levels. These levels can be reduced to four parts, which one of them is fighting the infidels. Jihad against the infidels is not using the weapons. There are several steps that must be passed, so that jihad to infidels can be done. Of this division is also seen that the jihad war is not the onlysolution used by Islam in upholding Allah’s name (kalimatullah). So, this paper is expected to be able to describe the jihad in Islam based on the Qur’an and Prophetic traditions.

Abstract

Today, human rights are always referenced as a measure of freedom to behave. This model of human rights is a typical Western worldview and forced to be applied in all areas, including in converting to other religions. Indeed, human rights and freedom of religion are containing the freedom to follow or embrace any religion or belief which believed. Everyone has the freedom, either individually or community, in public or private space, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching and worshiping. These rights andfreedoms are not absolute. If someone demands his rights, he is required to fulfill the obligations of human. Moreover, human rights are essentially limited by the rights of others. The existence of the universal Declaration of Human Rights brings a new problem, because of one of its clause guarantees and protects a person’s right to change his religion or faith. This is certainly contrary to Islam which forbids its ummah to change their religion. Because of this problem, the paper discusses the problems related to universal human rights and religious freedom.

Abstract

The characteristic of the liberal view is anti-authority, even to the scholar muslims or to the revelation, and demanding Islamic Sharia to adapt to the modern human rights. The authorities in religion (ulema) disagreed with this way of thinking, because it contradicted to the Islamic Sharia. For the supporters of religious liberalism, religion must be reinterpreted and if possible must be deconstructed. One of the bearers of the idea is Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im, a Sudanese Muslim thinker. He considered thatsharia (jurisprudence) that have existed before and done is a factor of setbacks and backwardness of Muslims today. Sharia is not something sacred (divine), because it is not a direct revelation from God Almighty. Na’im deconstructed an Islamic Sharia through the renewal of Usul Fiqh which has been established in the teachings of Islam. In this regard, he specifically deconstructs the concept of naskh in Islam, and offers a newconcept which considered as the answer to the backwardness of Muslims.

Abstract

There are three things examined in this article, the definition of gender, the concept of nature, and the concept of nurture. These three things need to be studied, because they are the keywords for feminists to spread their ideas to the world of Islam. The existence of feminism should be criticized, as historically this understanding did not make women better in running their lives. That because of problems in the concept of feminism and itsnegative effect. The caution is needed, because the gender activists often point to the backwardness of women and the suppression of them by showing the incorrect reasons. In addressing the differences between men and women, Islam has a better concept than feminism. Islam has a concept of fitrah and amanah. This paper tries to study theconcept of nature and nurture in the Islamic perspective, tries to present an alternative in addressing the differences between men and women, also tries to shows the proof whether Islam leans to the one of two concepts being debated.
