Abstract

Omid Safi is a professor of classical and contemporary Islamic studies in North America. His thought influences the contemporary Islamic discourses. It is progressive Muslims, which becomes a new paradigm after liberal Islam. Actually, both of these discourses are almost the same, but Safi tries to present progressive Muslims as a discourse different from liberal Islam. Later, Safi’s concept of progressive Muslims can inspire many Muslim scholars in the West. This study concludes that according to Omid Safi, progressive Muslims come from the spirit of renewal Islam and response to modernity. But after research and comparison from many aspects, progressive Muslims are doing a progressive ijtihad and interpretation to show the humanist Islam and tolerant for social issues by engaging both of tradition and modernity as the main characters. The researcher finally concludes that this discourse is redefining Islam in the manner as other several contemporary Islamic discourses, like liberal Islam and neo-modernism did.

Abstract

Tawheed as known and believed by Muslims is to declare that God as the only purpose in worship. According to Hasan Hanafi, a concept tauheed in Islam has made Muslims retarded. Therefore, a Muslims are left behind Westerns. Hanafi then offers another kind of tawheed which he calls by the Antropocentric Tawheed. Hanafi considers that God is no longer became as the center of everything. In Hanafi’s opinion, the main center of everything is human. The aim is to make a muslims advanced as Westerns. In Hanafi’s view, the Westerns advancied because they has liberated them self from religion (God). The purpose of this research is to reveal the concept and relevance of Hasan Hanafi’s Antropocentric Tauhid, and then to criticize it. By using descriptive method and critical analysis, in the end it was found that Hanafis thought is ambiguous. In the terms of terminology, the name of the Anthropocentric Tauhid that triggered the problem, so it takes a deep and systematic criticism to prove the error of this Hanafi idea.

Abstract

This article will examine the thoughts of the caliph Harun al-Rasyid about the concept of Islamic education that he initiated. He succeeded in establishing the “Baitul Hikmah” library which became an icon in the golden age of Islam in the Abbasid Period. In fact, this library is a symbol of civilization and the center of Islamic world enlightenment for Western civilization. Interestingly, this library is also the center of translation and copying of ancient Greek, Persian and other intellectual legacies. This is evidence of the success of Harun al-Rasyid’s ideas in the world of Islamic education. This research uses descriptive analysis method to explain Harun al-Rasyid’s thoughts on Islamic education, then the content analysis method is used to find the basic ideas and concepts of development in the future. After conducting research, the authors conclude that the successful application of his thought to Islamic education cannot be separated from his great attention to science. Even with the advancement of science, the economy of the people at that time became advanced. This research is very important to be learned as through this research can discoverd a very brilliant thought of the great chaliph Harun al-Rasyid.

Abstract

The term wasat }iyah is always related to kindness, justice and balance. When juxtaposed with “ideology” the term becomes “ideology wasat} iyah,” meaning a way or idea of   thinking that is good and fair with an Islamic perspective. But an Egyptian modernist wrote a book entitled, “Al-Imam> al-Syafi>’i wa Ta’sīs al-Idiulūjiyyah al-Wasati}yah.” The author of this book is Nasr Hamid Abu Zaid, and everything written in his book contains criticism of Imam Syafi’i. Based on that the writer wants to make the book as an object of research that will be focused on Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd’s criticism of Imam Syafi’i from the aspect of wasat}iyah ideology. This study aims to counter Nasr Hamid’s criticisms of Imam Syafi’i. The author focuses his study on four aspects criticized by Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd to Imam Shafi ‘,   namely al-Qur’an, Sunnah, Ijma and Qiyas from the standpoint of wasati}yah ideology. The result is that the writer found that Nasr Hamid was wrong in evaluating Imam Syafi’i.

Abstract

Among the sharia in Judaism is the ten commandments of God. Where the commandment has a high place in the Jewish religion. The Commandement is a life guideline in socializing with the community, whether in religious or social affairs. But Jews were not practicing the commandments. They believed more of the teachings brought by the Rabbis (Jewish ministers) compared to the ones listed in the Torah and the commandments. Consequently, many misappropriation, violence, and murder are caused by it. Based on this fact researchers want to further examine what the actual meaning of the commandment is and how does the distortion occur in it? The result of this research is 10 commandments that contain a very meaningful value. The deviation originated from the rewriting of the Torah after the death of the Prophet Moses. Besides, there is a reinterpretation of the Torah. The interpretation is the result of the thought of the Jewish priests who merely appetites to lust.

Abstract

Islam is a religion with universal teachings covering all lines of human life from various aspects. That is, that Islam has taught its people how to become real human beings as caliphs on this earth. All activities of a Muslim are arranged in two important guidelines, namely the Qur’an and Hadits. It is undeniable, that sometimes the texts of the Qur’an and Hadits are found to be contrary to Islam as the religion carrying out the mission of seclusion. However, these texts must be comprehended in their entirety and comprehensively by using their knowledge so that they gain a comprehensive understanding of a problem and do not seem to be in a hurry to conclude. In the study of hadits, the use of the knowledge Ma’a>ni> al-H{adi>ts becomes very important in understanding the substance and meaning of a hadits, for example the hadits prohibited from living with non-Muslims, at a glance this tradition presents Islam as an exclusive religion. But with the use of knowledge Ma’a>ni> al-H{adi>ts  in understanding this hadits, it will get an objective conclusion, so as not to give a negative impression on Muslims.

Abstract

The incorrect understanding of the verse Kun Fayaku>nu is closely related to theological issues. Al-Razi a mufassir who prioritizes ilm kala>m, uses the method of interpretation by mentioning the thoughts of Mu’tazilah, Karamiyah, and other deviant groups, then criticizing them based on the school of ahlu al-sunnah wa al-jama>’ah. He interpreted where the purpose of the verse is the speed of the breakdown of God’s power and His will in creating creatures or carrying out something new without anyone being able to oppose Him. Al-Razi interpreted that the command to what did not yet exist was not true, because what did not yet exist was invalid as something. While Allah’s words are qadi>m, while Allah’s chanting with the word Kun is muh}dats, then the original will is passed on to the will which depends on His commands with Kun’s words.

Abstract

During Islamic science development, Islamic community is divided into two groups. First, who is aimed to create rationalist society and being scientific in viewing the science by accepting it entirely from western view. Second, who decisively refuse the Western modernity by the argument that science and Islam can burgeon by turning back into Islamic foundations. Mehdi Golshani tries to explain the actual concept of Islamic science and criticism toward Western science. Based on result of this research, it can be concluded that first, Islamic science is the science which is based on Islamic values, such as the worldview in metaphysic form or Islamic philosophy assumption, epistemiologic principle and Islamic ethic in any science dimension. Second, criticism toward modern science is basically for positivism, secularism which is existent behind of epistemiology of modern science. Therefore, according to Mehdi Golshani the steps of scientific research which is done recently, ecpecially emphasizing on observastion and experiment is the standard step which is also done by Muslim scientist
