Abstract

For 300 years,. the name of Sheikh Yusuf, son of Macassar was missing from the government's attention and public intellectual as well. But when Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa,. commemorated 300 years of the arrival of Sheikh Yusuf in Cape Town in 1994, since that time government institution civil society and academics from Indonesia and South Africa have been paying to attention to remember, understand and study him from various perspectives. By using concept of remembering and forgetting, this article shows that the process of remembering by the two countries did not take place in the empty space, but rely on psychological consideration of the individuals, communities and socio-political condition from the two countries. The process of forgetting constructed by the Dutch colonial state in 17th century became inversely proportional to the action of remembering the Sheikh Yusuf by African and Indonesian officials in 20th century. The proces of remembering shows its own dynamics ranging from individuals communities to public memory. When remembering Syekh Yusuf reached state memory or public memory it became a power that can define and plan a socio-political and economic agenda for the future by the countries.

Abstract

This paper examines the use of social, religious and cultural heritage for community building and mosque participation by Indonesian Muslim communities in New York City and its impact on women?s leadership in al-Hikmah mosque and their production of moral agency and pious self in the mosque setting. I argue that Indonesian Muslim women in AI-Hikmah mosque has more leadership capacity due to the cultural heritage of Indonesian Islam and the complementary status of women in their communities. In this paper, I will, first, discuss how the cultural heritage of a mosque along with its patriarchal, masculine leadership influences women's treatment. I will, secondly, examine how female authority is produced within the enmeshed patriarchal leadership, the heritage of Indonesian values. and masculine mosque cultures. In particular, I will discuss how women's religious and social activities generate empirical characters that shape the performance of female moral agency and the cultivation of the pious self. I will, finnally, analyze a pattern of female authority in the mosque and the way in which women construct their authority as leaders in the mosque. Throughout the paper, I draw parallels between female authority in AI-Hikmah mosque and the social and cultural practices in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and understand the religious values contained in the Bakar Batu tradition for people in the land of Papua. With a qualitative approach, this research was conducted to find religious values in the culture of society, and describe the various meanings of the community towards these values. After going through the process of interviews, observation and study of documents, this study found that the tradition of Bakar Batu, which is an indigenous culture in the land of Papua, has undergone a transformation in governance, and the purpose of its tradition. Bakar Batu, which used to be a culinary wisdom of the people in the land of Papua, transformed into one of the solvents of vengeance and wound fusion for people who had previously fought each other. Bakar Batu also functions as a medium for channeling the blessings of the Supreme Being to the community, through the hands of executors of tradition. Tolerance, mutual cooperation and mutual respect are also reflected in the noble values of the implementation of the Bakar Batu tradition in the midst of the Papuan people. Bakar Batu is now a unifying medium between indigenous Papuans, people living in Papua, and migrants. The depth and noble wisdom of the process of Bakar Batu implementation also shows the achievement of religious values that have the potential to realize shared ideals towards a land of peace in Papua. Abstract

This is article derived from a thesis study in the Sociology Department of the University of Indonesia in 2008 exploring socio-economic, socio-political and socio-cultural contexts playing their roles in the formation of the political and religious fields along with their respective ?habitus? of the social agents in the Papua land. This paper discusses the history of the term ?papua? itself based on a historical study conducted by Solewijn Gelpke (1993). Based on historical approach, the relationship between Muslims and Christians in Papua can be traced as a religious and cultural heritage. Also, by using a sociological conception elaborated by Bourdieu (1992: 9), we may view the Papua land as a social space encompassing all conceptions of the social world. Bourdieu?s social space conception considers the social reality as a topology (Harker, 1990).

Abstract

The manaqib of ?Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani is of particular importance in the circle of the Tariqa Qadiriyya wa Naqsyabandiyyah (TQN). Some leaders of the TQN have done their best to give a translation and explanation of this manaqib. For instance, Muhammad Siddiq al-Salihi composed a work titled Nayl al-am?n? f? dhikr manaqib al-qu?b al-rabb?n? sayyidin? al-shaykh ?Abd al-Q?dir al-J?lan?. Another leader, Muslih ibn ?Abd al-Rahman al-Maraqi, wrote a treatise titled al-N?r al-burh?n? f? tarjamat al-lujayn al-d?n? f? dhikr nubdhah min manaqib al-shaykh ?Abd al-Q?dir al-J?lan?. The TQN master Nawawi Siddiq al-Zarkashi wrote a treatise titled Fuyu??t al-rabb?n? f? kayf?y?t qir??at manaqib sul??n al-awliy?? al-shaykh mu?y? al-d?n ?Abd al-Q?dir al-J?lan?. This paper will pay particular attention to the Nayl al-amani, since this work is relatively unknown in Indonesian academia. This book is written in standard Arabic, something which is nowadays rare in the Pesantren and tariqa scholarship. This book is read during the monthly communal ritual of the TQN in the Pesantren Manba? al-Falah, Dawe, Kudus, Central Java. This paper strives to unravel the narratives of hagiography in Nayl al-amani and also highlight the uniqueness of Nayl al-amani, most particularly in comparison with the two manaqib writings in the circle of the TQN in Central Java.

Abstract

Of the three millions Lombok population the Bayanese cover around 5,000 people, who have embedded Islam since 16th century ago. Despite their adherence to Islam, they still bold very strongly the adat (custom) to worship divine ancestors and various guardian spirits. This bas instigated dakwah (missionary) movement led by Tuan Guru (teacher) and his loyal disciples to purify Islamic ritual that violates the tauh?d (monotheism), They act as the agents of change who want to transform the Bayanese syncretic belief. The mission has put the Bayanese in dilemma. On one hand, it is very sensitive because it attempts to alter the sacred ancestral values which are highly respected. On the other hand, this mission offers free education and ecological project which intends to increase the living standard of local Bayanese
