Abstract

This paper reports on an ongoing research project on ?New Southeast Asian Spiritualties? and offers a preliminary analysis of new Muslim religiosities in the Jakarta metropolitan area (Jabodetabek). Most of the analyses of the processes of ?Islamization? in places like Indonesia and Malaysia in the last few decades focus on a particular set of social cum political agendas: the imposition of sharia law, the Islamization of the state apparatus, the increased emphasis on the external markers of ?Islamic identity? and the like. Yet, there appears to be an equally significant, even sometimes opposing, tendency among Southeast Asian Muslims that involves them in seeking out more intense and personalised ?inner? forms of religious experience, a process with parallels elsewhere in the world. In the paper, I discuss examples of this tendency based on fieldwork in the greater Jakarta area, and ask about its implications for current understandings of the consequences (for democracy, secularism, human rights, gender relations, etc.) of Islamization in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

In medieval Arabic literature a taqr³§ is a written endorsement of a certain text, which a prestigious scholar provides at the request of another scholar to support the latter?s new writing. In this sense it can be compared to the contemporary ?blurb?, to advertise a new book. The taqr³§ is important because it connects and offers insights into active networks of like-minded scholars. Unfortunately this topic is still insufficiently studied and the present paper aims to make a contribution to this subject. The research examines an original taqr³§ from the nineteenth century which a scholar in Batavia obtained from his former teacher in Mecca. The paper shows that the taqr³§ is also in existence in more modern times and even beyond the Arab world.

Abstract

More recently, at least some decades after the triumph of global communication, thousands of fundamental and radical books?whether politically, religiously or culturally based books?have already rapidly grown in the world-wide. This phenomena, culturally can be seen from the positive spectrum as a new global dynamics of literacy civilization, but on the contrary it also can be considered as any kind of viruses treating the peaceful and harmonious life amongst Muslims' community at large. Even so the growth of religious radical books, including Islamic books which are strongly influenced by the growth and distribution of any universal ideologies and philosophical thoughts. In this concern, this article attempts to explicate of how the exclusive books grew up in Indonesia. A survey on ?Mapping of the Islamic Books in the Post-Reformation Era in Indonesia, earned out in 2013 showed us, besides there is an increase of the practical books on Islam read by Muslims at large, the exclusive and extreme books have been growing significantly?including the books published by both fundatnental and radical book publication.

This book is taught in Al-Ihya Ulumaddin Islamic Boarding School, Cilacap, Central Java. The teaching of the book ?Aq?dah al-?Aw?m in Al-Ihya Ulumaddin Islamic Boarding, Cilacap, is one of the efforts to keep and maintain the aqidah of the students in the boarding school. The method used in this study was philology which was conducted in several steps, namely; identifying manuscript, describing manuscript, and conducting a content analysis of the manuscript. The results suggested that the conception of aqeeidah in the Book ?Aq?dah al-?Aw?m includes knowledge of the attributes of Allah (God), of Prophets/Messengers, Angels, Holy Book, and Day of Judgment. Abstract

Indonesian Chinese with no exception Chinese Muslim in Indonesia has stepped into a considerable freedom during the current Reformation era. As like as many other Chinese Indonesians who take a part in creating integration model without abandoning their ethnic identity, Chinese Muslim have also shown similar endeavor. However, within the context of post-Reformation democracy, it seems that Chinese Muslim solely fights against any other Indonesian Chinese group and other Muslim community in Indonesia at the same time. Study about Chinese Muslim in Indonesia after Reformation is briefly undertaken ranging from its political contexts, cultural, and economy alike. Some scholars who interest in its cultural realm have been dealt with the important role of Chinese in spreading Islam into Nusantara in 14th Century. Here, Admiral Cheng Ho was an influential figure to introduce Islam to local people in northern coastal area of Java Island. It sounds that it is unlike with many other scholars who convince that Islam came to Java in the hand of Gujarat traders. This paper tries to explore the existence of Chinese Muslim in Jakarta during the current Post Reformation era. To complete this paper, I try to combine data that taken from in-depth interview with literature review and personal observation on some people and signs of Chinese Muslim in Jakarta.

Abstract

The focus of this paper is not on theological aspects of the Qur?an, or on the study of the Qur?anic sciences in Southeast Asia over the past centuries, but rather to attempt to trace the path of the appreciation of old copies of the Qur?an in Southeast Asia as part of the historical record of the Islamic heritage of the region.  In this light, Qur?an manuscripts are viewed as objects of material culture which can cast light on the societies which produced them, and as works of art which testify to the heights of artistic creativity in the region, for illuminated Qur?an manuscripts represent the pinnacle of achievements in the arts of the book in Southeast Asia. This historical record can be measured through a survey of how, where, when and by whom Qur?an manuscripts in Southeast Asia were collected, documented, studied and published, both in Southeast Asia itself and in the west.
