Abstract

HIV / AIDS remains a global problem, more than 34 million people infected with HIV / AIDS. When a person with HIV / AIDS will become vulnerable to opportunistic infections. Manifestations of Candida fungal opportunistic infections in people with HIV / AIDS is most commonly a Oropharyngeal candidiasis. In addition, oral fungal infections include: acute pseudomembranous candidiasis, acute atrophic candidiasis, chronic atrophic candidiasis, chronic hyperplastic candidiasis and candida cheilosis. Fungal infections are common in people with HIV / AIDS as it relates to the level of immunosuppression, which can be an indicator of HIV infection and prediction of progression to AIDS infection.

Abstract

Dental health perception and behavior of Indonesian people is still worse. The prevalence dental caries and oral diseases in Indonesia were increasing. A lot of Indonesia people didn’t know about how to care oral health. The aim of this study was to know how to care dental health of student in Pondok Pesantren Al-Azhar Jember. This was descriptive study. Sampling technique was absolute technique and used questioner. Result analysis was showed in frequency distribution. The result showed that dental health care behavior of elementary students was good; otherwise junior high school students were moderate.

Abstract

Sisik naga (Drymoglossum piloselloides) has been used empirically for dysentry and candidiasis. This diseases were caused by bacteria and fungi. The objective of this research was to evaluate the antibacterial effect and to find out the antimicrobial compound of sisik naga. Leaf of sisik naga was extracted with ethanol 90% by using maseration. This extract were tested for antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans using agar difussion. TLC Bioautography methods was used to identify the active compound. Result of antibacterial test showedf ethanolic extract of sisik naga had antibacterial effect against S. mutans. Bioautography showed one spot on Rf =0 give clear zone.

Abstract

Almost people in the world got periodontal disease. It is about 50 % of adult population. Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) is anaerobic negative gram bacteria and played role in periodontitis, especially chronic periodontitis. Periodontal disease can be prevented by decreasing of plaque accumulation with oral rinse. Oral rinse can use traditional herbal, such as green and red betel leaf. Aim of this study was to know difference of antibacterial effectivity of green (piper betle l) and red (piper crocatum) betel leaf extract toward P. gingivalis. This research used well diffusion methods. There used 24 samples and divided 3 groups. First group used red betel leaf extract, second group used green betel leaf extract and third group used sterile aquadest. The samples were incubated for 24 hours in room temperature 37°C. Then, they were measured by inhibition zone by calipers. The result showed diameters of inhibition zone of green betel leaf was larger than red betel leaf and sterile aquadest. One way Anova test showed there was significant difference between the groups. The conclusion showed green betel leaf extract had antibacterial activity more than red betel leaf extract toward P. gingivalis.

Abstract

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have generated a promise as a potential source of cells for tissue engineering application due to their instrinsic ability to self-renew and differentiate into functional cell types. With their ability to differentiate into multiple cell phenotypes, mesenchymal stem cells offer the potential to regenerate entire tissue from a single cell source. Recent studies have demonstrated that MSCs were successfully used for bone repair, cartilage repair and soft tissue repair. This paper briefly outlines the biological characteristics of Mesenchymal stem cell and its application in tissue engineering field.

Abstract

Remineralization is a natural repair process for caries lesions. It is now well-accepted that the primary modes of action of fluoride are enhancement of remineralization, inhibition of demineralization, and inhibition of plaque bacteria, with remineralization being the most important. This study to aimed to understanding the role of remineralization methods to alter mineral balance on management of non-invasive dental caries. Calcium and phosphate delivery can be enhanced to improve remineralization, especially in persons with reduced salivary function. There is a great need for improved and novel remineralization methods to alter the caries balance for the better, especially in individuals with a high cariogenic bacterial challenge. There was also influence of fluoride and carbonate on the remineralization process. Dentinal tubules were occluded by apatite crystallites is a feature also shared by transparent dentin beneath caries lesions and age-induced transparent dentin. It is based on unstabilized amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), where a calcium salt and a phosphate salt are delivered intra-orally or delivered in a product with a low water activity. As the salts mix with saliva, they dissolve, releasing calcium and phosphate ions. The mixing of calcium ions with phosphate ions to produce an ion activity product for amorphous calcium phosphate that exceeds its solubility product results in the immediate precipitation of ACP or, in the presence of fluoride ions, amorphous calcium fluoride phosphate (ACFP). In the intra-oral en vironment, these phases (ACP and ACFP) are potentially very unstable and may rapidly transform into a more thermodynamically stable, crystalline phase (e.g., hydroxyapatite and fluorhydroxyapatite). However, before phase transformation, calcium and phosphate ions should be transiently bioavailable to promote enamel subsurface lesion remineralization.

Abstract

The growth of tumors is caused by imbalances between the rates at which cells are produced through cell division and the rate at which they die through a natural cell death process known as programmed cell death (also referred to as apoptosis). Problems in apoptosis mechanisms also contribute to therapy resistance, making tumors more difficult to kill with radiation or chemotherapy. It is important therefore to understand why tumors become refractory to apoptosis and to devise strategies for restoring proper function to cell death pathways in tumor cells. Recently it has been discovered that cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) have a relationship with apoptosis pathway. Higher levels of COX-2 have been reported in some kinds of cancer. One of the roles of COX-2 in tumor development is its positive effect on the survival of tumor cells. The goal of this project is to provide review insights into the role of COX-2 in cancer. We will explore whether COX-2 inhibitors can shut off survival genes in cancer cells, and we will study how COX-2 affects the programmed cell death machinery of cancer cells. Understanding the mechanisms by which COX-2 contributes to cancer development will reveal to what extent this enzyme is an important target in the chemoprevention and treatment of cancer.

Abstract

SKRT 1995 showed that 63% of Indonesia people got active dental caries or tooth decay that had been in treatment. Patients usually come to dental clinic is in severe condition and with pulp inflammation. The treatment is endodontic intacanal. Otherwise, not all of hospitals give recommendation for patient to take this treatment. The aim of this study was to know services/ treatment pattern that given by hospital. This was descriptive study that did in Balung, Genteng, and Kalisat hospital. This study used secondary data such as patients visiting data for knowing kind of service that given by dentists. The result showed Balung hospital gave endodontic treatment, but the others didn’t give it.

Abstract

Public Health Center is a functional organization that organizes health effort that is comprehensive, integrated, equitable, acceptable and affordable to the public. Performance of health workers in govermment health care organizations is still low. Coverage of patients in dental clinics that are low performing dentist is not optimal. The research aims to find the services provided by the dentist at the health center Sumbersari in the period January to June 2012.
