Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by an increase in blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia) due to disturbances in insulin secretion and insulin action. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease characterized by high blood glucose levels, because the body cannot release or use insulin adequately. There are many factors that trigger or aggravate periodontitis, including plaque accumulation, calculus (tartar), and systemic factors such as diabetes mellitus. Objective: To explain that there is a close relationship between elevated blood glucose levels and periodontitis. Case Description: A 77 year old woman presented with a loose left upper tooth and pain during eating. The patient admitted to having a history of systemic disease, namely diabetes mellitus. Intra oral examination was found on 27th grade 3 luxation, 6 mm gingival recession, 4 mm probing depth, debris around the teeth, oral hygiene tends to be poor. The therapy provided is in the form of education on the effect of diabetes mellitus on teeth and the condition of the oral cavity in general, as well as the importance of maintaining health and food consumption so that blood sugar conditions are controlled. Conclusion: Periodontal disease can be affected by DM. Periodontitis is one of the manifestations of DM in the oral cavity. The severity of periodontitis can result from an increase in blood glucose levels.

Abstract

Acrylic resins are frequently used as the basic materials of dentures in daily dental practices. Submersion of dentures in disinfectant is usually done by denture users to prevent plaque accumulation. Red betel leaf decoction and essential oils of red betel leaf 10% and 25% can be used as an alternative natural disinfectant contain polyphenols, because it can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans which is commonly found in prosthesis denture users. On the other hand, the polyphenols of red betle leaves was predicted can affect the roughness and discoloration of acrylic resin. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in surface roughness and discoloration of heat cured acrylic resin submersed in decoction of red betel leaf and essential oil of red betel leaf 10% and 25%. This study was a laboratory experimental with pre and post test group design research.measuring surface roughness value with surface roughness TR 220 and discoloration value with color reader TCR 200. Conclusion: there is a difference in surface roughness and discoloration of acrylic resin that is submersed in decoction of red betel leaves and essential oils of red betel leaf 10% and 25%.

Abstract

Hypertension presents an increase in blood pressure following the oral manifestations, such as gingival enlargement. A 42-year-old woman came to the General Sudirman University Dental and Oral Hospital complaining of enlarged front gums seven years ago. The patient had a history of hypertension and regularly consumed drugs, amlodipine 5 mg. Extraoral examination revealed no lymphadenopathy and no swelling of the head and neck area. Intraoral examination revealed a gingival enlargement involving the papilla to the gingival margin present on the entire upper and lower labial gingival surface. The patient's diagnosis was gingival enlargement caused by gingival enlargement due to the use of amlodipine. Gingival enlargement has been noted with long-term or high-dose amlodipine use. The mechanism of amlodipine in causing gingival enlargement is through the role of fibroblasts with abnormal susceptibility to the drug, resulting in increased levels of protein synthesis, especially collagen. The role of pro-inflammatory cytokines occurs through an increase in interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-6 in the inflamed gingival tissue due to the gingival fibrogenic response to drugs. Therapies were DHE and scaling and root planning as phase I in periodontal treatment. Plaque elimination is vital to reduce gingival inflammation that may occur. Substitution of the drug amlodipine may be needed if there is no improvement. Based on case reports, hypertension patients who took amlodipine could have gingival enlargement. The therapy given was plaque elimination in the form of DHE and Scaling and regular check-ups with the dentist.

Abstract

The health of the teeth and mouth aims to prevent the occurrence of holes in the teeth as the main cause of infection in other organs in the oral cavity. Knowledge of parents is a factor that determines oral and dental care behavior early in treating oral and dental health. The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge about dental health and dental care behavior in children aged 10-12 years. This type of research was cross sectional. The independent variable was knowledge about dental care and the dependent variable was dental care behavior. One month research time at Banasare 1 Elementary School, Rubaru Subdistrict. Population and sample of all grade IV and V students. The sampling technique used the total population. The research instrument was questionnaire and dental care behavior. Data analysis used Spearman with α (0.05). The results showed that almost all dental health knowledge was good, as many as 40 people (93.0%). Almost all dental care behaviors were good, as many as 40 people (93.0%). The results of data analysis obtained p value = 0,000 with a = 0.005, so p value (0,000) <a (0,005) then H0 is rejected which means there was a relationship between the level of knowledge about dental health and dental care behavior in children aged 10-12 years in SDN Banasare I, Rubaru District. Efforts to improve dental and oral health can be done through health promotion at Banasare Elementary School I. Effective promotion was done by exemplifying how to treat teeth using props continuously every month so that consistency of behavior can be formed and maintained.

Abstract

Petechiae are round red lesions with a diameter of less than 2 mm located in the subcutaneous tissue or submucosa. Locations that often occur are the buccal mucosa, cheeks, lips, lateral tongue, base of the tongue, palate, oropharynx. The etiologic factors of petechiae consist of two types, local factors and systemic factors. Local factors that cause petechiae such as trauma, injury, fellatio, iatrogenic trauma. Systemic factors that cause petechiae such as platelet abnormalities, blood clotting factor disorders, blood vessel damage. An 8-year-old woman with her parents came to RSGMP Unsoed with complaints of red spots on the floor of the mouth, the patient was not aware of the redness under the tongue before treatment on the right lower tooth, did not feel pain and did not feel disturbed by this condition, The patient stated that this had never happened before. The patient is undergoing dental pulpotomy. Petechiae caused by trauma can heal by eliminating the etiologic factor.

Abstract

Chronological and dental age are necessary aspects of dental age estimation. Both have a close relationship. Chronological age reflects the age of the tooth, and vice versa. Dental age estimation aims to provide the data in the field of dentistry with an accurate dental age range. In order to get the value of an accurate estimate of dental age, needed a method of estimation that has a standard deviation as low as possible and validated in a specific population groups of an individual. Demirjian method is a method frequently used in the dental age estimation. It uses the classification stages of the seven permanent teeth of mandibular left side using panoramic radiographs. Application of its method in some countries showed vary results so it needed adjustment. Blenkin standard is an adjustment of its method that changes the score of maturity stages 0-H to 1-8 and calculate the dental age by regression formula. The study aimed to assess the dental age estimation using Blenkin standard on children of Javanese ethnic in Jember region. This was an analytic descriptive study design. The samples were panoramic radiographs. The subjects were 70 samples consisting of 29 boys and 41 girls with an age range 6-12 years, and they were divided into 7 groups based on chronological age. Each tooth of the sample was calculated using Blenkin standard. The Blenkin standard showed non-significant difference with the age difference in the amount of approximately -0.22 years for boys and -0.03 years for girls (underestimation).
