Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) caused by strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (M. tuberculosis), is a pulmonary infection that is spread by airborne droplet transmission. Highest incidences occurred in India. Indonesia soared on 2th place worldwide with 420.994 cases of tuberculosis in 2017. Most of TB patients do not maintain oral hygine and are smokers which can cause several oral manifestations such as oral candidiasis. The purpose of this case report is to describe the oral manifestations that occur in tuberculosis patients. A 39-year-old male patient complained of white plaques on tongue and sore throat since 2 weeks ago. The patient has a history of TB. The patient is being treated at Prof. Dr. Margono Soekardjo Hospital. Treatment plans that can be given is pharmacological therapy. Topical antifungal drug therapy is nystatin oral suspension. Non-pharmacological therapy in the form of communication, information, and education provided to patients in order to avoid some of the predisposing factors for candidiasis and the need for collaboration with pulmonary specialists who are dealing with systemic diseases. The key of success treatments for patient are management of oral candidiasis include administration of antifungal agents to suppress fungal, identification and elimination of predisposing factors and good communication, information and education.

Abstract

Candidiasis is an opportunistic fungal infection caused by Candida albicans. The prevalence of candidiasis in Indonesia is around 20-25%, it can attack the skin, nails, hair, throat, and mouth. One of the fungal infections that occur in the oral cavity is oral candidiasis. Oral candidiasis is caused by overgrowth of Candida albicans species in the oral cavity which is dominated by Candida albicans as much as 85-95%. One of the treatments using herbal medicinal plants is cocoa peel containing active compounds including phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, and terpenoids which are thought to be antifungal. The aim was to determine the inhibition of cocoa peel extract on the growth of Candida albicans. This study used the disc diffusion method with 4 samples in each study group. The research group consisted of 5 treatment groups (10%, 20%, 40%, 80%, and 100% cocoa peel extract), positive control group (nystatin), and negative control group (sterile aquades). Data were analyzed using One Way Anova test and LSD (Least Significant Difference) test. Concentrations of extracts of cocoa pods 100% and 80% have the ability to inhibit the growth of Candida albicans.

Abstract

Oral candidiasis is a fungal infection that occurs in the oral mucosa caused by the growth of Candida albicans. One of the antifungal drugs that are widely used by the public is nystatin. Nystatin is an effective drug because of its low toxicity level, but can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, and resistance. In order to minimize these side effects, natural ingredients from red pomegranate can be used which have antifungal active ingredients in it. To compare the effectiveness of the whole extract with the skin of the red pomegranate (Punica granatum Linn) on the healing of oral candidiasis in Wistar rats. This research is a laboratory experimental study with a post-test only control group design. The samples used were 24 male wistar rats which were divided into 4 groups, namely (P1) the red pomegranate extract group with a concentration of 75%, (P2) the red pomegranate peel extract group with a concentration of 75%, (K+) the nystatin group, and (K -) the group that was not given anything. Microbiological examination and clinical examination (supporting examination). The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis non-parametric analysis test, the data before the extract and control showed no significant difference between each group (p>0.05) and the data after the extract and control administration showed there was a significant difference between each group. (p<0.05). Based on the Mann-Whitney test showed that red pomegranate extract and red pomegranate peel extract had a significant difference (p<0.05). Red pomegranate extract (Punica granatum Linn) at 75% concentration was more effective than red pomegranate skin extract (Punica granatum Linn) at 75% concentration on oral candidiasis treatment in wistar rats.

Abstract

Tooth movement in Orthodontic is brought about orthodontic archwire, which generate the biomechanical forces, transmit these forces via brackets to bring about tooth movement. Niti wire are the most commonly used in orthodontic treatment. These devices have characteristics that can lead to plaque accumulation. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of edamame extract (Glycine max L. Merril) Against Streptococcus Mutans (S. mutans) on orthodontic Nickel Titanium (NiTi). This study was an in vitro laboratory experimental study with a posttest only control group design. Edamame were extracted using the maceration method using 70% ethanol. NiTi immersed in artificial saliva in order to form pellicles for bacterial adhesion. NiTi that has been formed pellicles are then contaminated with S. mutans bacterial suspension, then cleaning is done by immersing in distilled water and edamame extract (Glycine Max L. Merril) with a concentration of 50, 75 and 100mg/ ml then observation is carried out by counting the number of colonies. with the Total Plate Count (TPC) method. The results showed that the smallest average number of S. mutans colonies was found in the edamame extract concentration of 75 and 100mg/ml. The statistical results showed that there was a significant difference between the 75 mg / ml edamame extract group and the negative control. Edamame extract with concentration of 50 mg/ml is an effective concentration in inhibiting the growth of S.Mutans bacteria.

Abstract

Heat-cured acrylic resin is a material that is often used as a denture base. However, heat-cured acrylic resin is porous which can be a site for plaque accumulation. Streptococcus mutans is a microorganism that initiates plaque formation. Therefore, the cleanliness of the denture must always be maintained, one of which is by immersing the denture in 0.5% NaOCl solution. However, NaOCl can fade the color of acrylic resin and is corrosive. Alternative materials that can be used are materials derived from nature. Tamarind leaves are known to contain bioactive compounds that have antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study is to determine the potential of tamarind leaf extract at several concentrations that could inhibit the growth of S. mutans on heat-cured acrylic resin and the concentration that had the greatest ability to inhibit the growth of S. mutans on heat-cured acrylic resin. This type of research is a laboratory experimental study with a post-test-only control group design. Each acrylic resin plate will be contaminated with S. mutans for 24 hours and then immersed in the tamarind leaves extract concentration of 3.125%; 6.25%; 12.5%; 25%, positive control (NaOCl 0,5%), and negative control. The measurement of the number of S. mutans was carried out using a spectrophotometer. . The results showed that tamarind leaf extract was able to inhibit the growth of S. mutans on heat-cured acrylic resin and the highest concentrations in inhibiting the growth of S. mutans on heat-cured acrylic resin were 12.5% and 25%.
