Abstract

Background: Needs of dental cosmetic services increased due to people's desire to get a brighter and whiter smile. Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is one of bleaching substance that most commonly used. Use of H2O2 in a high concentration can cause a negative impact on the oral cavity. Honey is a natural ingredient that can whiten teeth. This study aimed to determine the effect of concentration of honey on tooth colour changes of teeth whitening process. Method: This research was an experimental in vitro study using pretest-posttest design with teeth as a research sample. 24 premolars teeth as samples were soaked in various concentration of honey (25%, 35%, 50%, 75%). The colour of teeth were measured with a spectrophotometer before and after treatment. Teeth colour were analyzed by paired samples T-test. Result: Paired T-test showed p<0.05, which means that concentration of honey affected on tooth colour changes. One way ANOVA test results showed concentrations of honey significantly affect tooth discoloration (p <0,05). Post hoc test results showed significant difference On the concentration of 25% of the concentration of honey 50%, 75%, but on a concentration of 25% honey and 35% there is no significant difference. Conclusion: From these results, it can be concluded that the concentration of honey affected on tooth colour changes in an in vitro tooth whitening process.

Abstract

Background: Banana counted as nearly perfect food since it contains six nutrients : water , sugar , proteins , fats , vitamins , and minerals . Because of that , bananas are often used as a staple food for most people because of its nutritional value. However, sometimes people do not realize the benefits of bananas as a whole , from leaves , fruits , flowers and stems of the bananas . Penggaron Lor society , still minimal in using the banana plant . Usually the community will sell fruit and leaves to the market , so that the results obtained from the banana plant community less than optimal. Method : This study is an observational analytic study . The research was done in the Village of Penggaron Lor Semarang , and was conducted in March-June 2014. The instrument in this research was primary data obtained directly from respondents through interviews using questionnaires distributed before and after counseling . To determine whether there are differences in knowledge before and after counseling on the benefits of banana plants as a medium for maintaining oral hygiene, statistical test Wilcoxon Sign Ranks test was conducted, and processed with SPSS. Result: The results of SPSS calculation because the data is not normal ( p value < 0.05), then the data was processed using the non-parametric test for two sample pairs , ie Wilcoxon Sign Ranks test , and obtained p value of 0.008 . This means that there was a significant difference between the mean value of the pre-test and post-test. Conclusion : there are differences in knowledge before and after counseling , counseling means that a significant impact on respondents' knowledge of the benefits of banana plants for maintain oral health.

Abstract

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is an inflammation of the soft tissues of the mouth that is characterized by recurrent ulcers. SAR is clinically divided into three types, ie recurrent aphthous stomatitis minor, major and herpetiform. Clinical features of minor types usually with a diameter of about 2-4 mm with yellow-gray base and surrounded by an erythematous halo, affects mainly the non-keratinized mobile mucosae such as lips and tongue, a few ulcers (1-5) or multiple at a time, minor ulcers usually heal within 10-14 days without scarring. Early lesions on the SAR is usually felt by people as burning, followed by extremely pain. The aetiology of RAS is unknown, but associated with a variety of predisposing such as menstrual cycle and trauma. Case management is topical steroids, topical antiseptic and vitamins C to relieve the symptoms and fasten healing.

Abstract

Background: Wound healing is a complex biological process. Fibroblast is one of cell which is responsible for the wound healing process. Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) have health benefit as antibacterial, antiinflamatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory. This research was purposed to know the influence use of VCO over the amount of fibroblast in wound healing after dental extraction.Method: Research quasi experimental with post test control group design and using 15 Rattus novergicus which were divided into three groups (control positive, VCO topical application, and VCO per oral application). Tooth removal was committed by using explorer, scalpel-blade, and arterial clamp. Then VCO applied everyday for 7 days. Day 7th Rattus novergicus were died, the socket after extraction were made into histological form, then the amount of fibroblast were counted with 5 field of views and made in average. Result: The number of fibroblast of the most numerous was VCO per oral ( 48,6 ± 49,8 ), VCO topical ( 36,2 ± 38,8 ), and control positive ( 33,4 ± 35,2 ). The results of the Saphiro Wilk test and Levene test acquired data normally distributed and homogeny, so it continued to One Way Anova and data showed there were significant difference among the groups of samples with value p<0,05.Conclusion: The conclusion of this research is VCO could increase the number of fibroblasts in wound healing after dental extractions

Abstract

Background: Bit fruit (Beta vulgaris) is plants as group of vegetables, has potencial as a source of natural dyes for food products. In dental health, a coloring agent which has contrast color with teeth is used for dental plaque identification. Disclosing solution is the most common used material for this purpose. Purpose of this study was to identify if bit fruit can substitute disclosing solution as coloring agent for plaque identification. Method: Research design was Quasi Eksperimental Research.with Posttest Only Control Group Design. Samples was 36 elementary students which divided into 2 groups. Group 1 was 18 students given disclosing solution while group 2 was given bit fruit solution. Independent t test was used to determine diferences between two groups. Result: Research results showed mean of plaque index after application of bit fruit and disclosing solution was 3,75 and 2,66 , with independent t-test resulten significancy 0,000 < 0,05. There was differences of plaque index after two group of application. Conclusion: the bit fruit was more effective to determine plaque compared to disclosing solution.

Abstract

Background: Blood and saliva are the media for bacteria to accumulate, and it can stick to the surface of a alginate's impression during the molding process. Immersion with glutaraldehyde is one of the impression material desinfectant method since glutaraldehyde is spatially as bacterisid and fungisid. Something that must be considered when performing disinfection is the disinfection technique, as it would affect the dimension stability of impression materials. The aim of this research was to know the influence of immersion time in solution 2% glutaraldehyde disinfectant againts dimension stability. Method: The type of this research was quasi experimental using 30 samples, which were divided into five groups each containing 6 samples. The samples of alginate's impression were immersed in disinfectant solution of glutaraldehyde 2% respectively for 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes and also without immersion as the control group, then conducted a horizontal dimension stability measurement is the diameter of the die by using a digital caliper. Data were analyzed by one-way Anova test. Result: The result of this research were obtained a significance (p<0,05) between horizontal dimension stability of alginate's impression without immersed and horizontal dimension stability of alginate's impression after immersed for 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes. Conclusion: Conclusion of this research was there was an influence of immersion time alginate's impression in disinfectant solution glutaraldehyde 2 % againts dimension stability.

Abstract

Background: Saliva pH is the standard indicator used to describe the alkalinity or acidity of the saliva which could be changed by dietary (sugar), mechanically or chemically stimuli from food or beverages consumed. Grapes and guava fruit are often used as beverage. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of drinking one of grape or guava juice with and without sugar to PH of saliva changes. Method: The research method used in this study was a quasi experiment with cross sectional approach. The study was conducted on 40 college students which were divided into 4 groups, i.e. groups of grape juice with and without sugar and guava juice drink groups with and without sugar. Juice was made with electric juicer with 200 g of fruit mixed with 450 ml of water for groups without sugar and added 50 g of white sugar for groups with sugar. The volume of juice to drink was 50 ml. Salivary pH was measured using pH strips and performed before and 2 minutes after drinking the juice. Results: The results showed that there was an increase in the pH of saliva after drinking the juice in all treatment groups (p <0.05), except in grape juice with sugar, but salivary pH changes among the treatments were similar (p = 0.252). Conclusion: The conclusion of this study was grape juice and guava juice with and without sugar could increased the pH of saliva. except grape juice with sugar. but between treatment groups there was no difference in salivary pH changes

Abstract

Background: Gingival pigmentation is the coloring/staining of the gingiva in the form of a dark purplish color or irregular light brown spots. This staining is derived from melanin granules produced by cells melanoblas. Gingival hyperpigmentation caused by excessive melanin deposition . The cause of this gingival hyperpigmentation is multifactorial : genetic factors , local and systemic . The aims of this article is to overbear the gingival hyperpigmentation with simple techniques , does not require several equipments , but gives contentment results to the patient . Discussion : The gingival melanin hyperpigmentation is not cause medical problems , usually to the point the appearance especially when talking and smiling . Depigmentation is periodontal plastic surgery to remove or reduce gingival hyperpigmentation . There are many ways to eliminate gingival hyperpigmentation , one of them is a surgical using scalpel . Depigmentation surgery does not require any special tools but gives satisfactory results for the patient. Conclusion : Hyperpigmentation gingival surgery techniques can be overcome by using scalpel surgery.

Abstract

Background: Dental plaque is a thin layers composed of various microorganisms which is formed on teeth surface after contacted with saliva in several minutes. Dental plaque is not dental disease but can be cause dental caries and periodontal disease and others teeth and mouth diseases.The relation of dental plaque and dental caries is on the plaque acidity that tend to email and dentine demineralisation, which will cause dental caries.Research purpose was to investigate influence dental plaque to oral hygiene index and dental caries index on child at the poltekkes dental clinic in pontianak 2013.Method: Research at the poltekkes pontianak dental clinic in may 2013. subject of study consisted of 32 patients child. 20 children of the female and 13 children of the male s. this research is research quantitative with the approach of observation and cross sectional methode. Result: The result, Ph dental plak is not significant relation with oral higiene index and caries index. Conclusion: caries caused multifaktorial so the prevention of various terms need to be done.Keywords: pH dental plaque, oral higiene index, dental caries index

Abstract

Background: Periodontitis is the inflammation of periodontal tissue that is characterized by the migration to the apical epithelial jungsional with clinical signs of an increase in probing depth. Periodontitis is one of the oral manifestations in patients with DM. CRP is a protein alpha-globulin produced in the liver and increased levels of inflammatory process in the event. In diabetic patients increased levels of CRP resulted in periodontal tissue destruction. The purpose of this study was to determine the profile of CRP levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus with periodontitis. Method: This research was conducted using analytical observational research methods. The samples used were type 2 diabetes patients with periodontitis and the control group of patients with type 2 diabetes without periodontitis in Sultan Agung Islamic Hospital . All of samples were examined periodontal index, levels of CRP and oral hygiene. Result: Mann Whitney's test show significance p=0.000, which means there are significant differences between groups. Spearman-Kendall's correlation show that relationship between CRP and periodontal index p=0.000 with a correlation coefficient 0.875 means p<0.05 there was that a significant relationship exists between them and the relationship is strong . In relation OH and periodontitis index p=0.030 with a correlation coefficient of 0.650 means p<0.05 there was that a significant relationship exists between them and the relationship strong . Conclusion: It can be concluded that CRP levels in patients type 2 diabetes with periodontitis is higher than the patients type 2 diabetes without periodontitis. And there is a strong relationship between levels of CRP with periodontitis index , and also a strong relationship between periodontitis and OH index .
