Abstract

This study aims to determine the volatility of political parties and the causes of the volatility of political party votes in the 2014-2024 Semarang Regency DPRD general election. The type of research used is qualitative research combined with qualitative in numeric with a descriptive approach. The results of this study show that the Semarang Regency DPRD election volatility index is low, with an average of 26.29 in the last three elections. This can be seen in the 2019 Election Volatility Index of 33.05 decreasing to 19.54 in the 2024 Election. Low volatility indicates a strong relationship between parties and constituents that leads to stable election results while also indicating openness or rationality of voters. Low volatility is caused by two factors, namely (1) internal party factors (party organization) which refer to loyalty, social roots, division or cohesion and party electoral performance (2) external factors (volatility of the party system) which refer to the election system, political party format, ideological polarization and media coverage. Abstract

The transformation of Wahhabism in Saudi Arabia within the framework of Vision 2030 reflects a fundamental shift in the relationship between religion, state, and society. Although Wahhabism has historically served as the ideological foundation of the Saudi kingdom since the 18th century, the modernization policies promoted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have systematically pushed for a reformulation of this doctrine. This study adopts a qualitative approach using literature review methods to analyze the state's strategies in reconstructing Wahhabism and their socio-political implications. The primary focus includes the redefinition of religious discourse, co-optation of the clerical establishment, and the deconstruction of Wahhabi symbols in public spaces. Moreover, the study highlights the impact of these changes on the legitimacy of political power, the role of clerics, and the relationship between religion and the state. Utilizing institutional and discourse analysis frameworks, this research finds that the state is not only reshaping internal ideological structures but is also repositioning religion as a tool for development and social control. The findings indicate a shift from religion-based legitimacy to performance-based legitimacy, alongside the marginalization of independent clerics and the institutionalization of a more pragmatic, state-defined version of Islam.

Abstract

This study examines corporate power in natural resource governance through a critical analysis of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) implemented by PT Freeport Indonesia in Papua, focusing on the role of the Amungme and Kamoro Community Empowerment Foundation (YPMAK). The research employs Critical Management Studies (CMS) and Postcolonial Theory to analyze CSR as a mechanism of power. CMS is used to reveal how CSR policies and managerial practices reproduce power relations, depoliticize social conflict, and legitimize corporate dominance within global capitalism. Postcolonial Theory, drawing on Edward Said and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, helps identify the persistence of colonial legacies through resource control, top-down development discourses, and the marginalization of Indigenous knowledge. This study adopts a qualitative research method with an interpretive analytical approach, focusing on the interpretation of CSR discourses and practices as arenas of power relations. The analysis relies on secondary data, including corporate sustainability reports, CSR documents, regulatory frameworks, and civil society reports. The objective of this research is to critically assess CSR as a mechanism of legitimacy and social license to operate, and to evaluate whether CSR initiatives contribute to the fulfillment of the social, economic, and cultural rights of the Amungme and Kamoro communities. The findings indicate that Freeport’s CSR through YPMAK operates in a largely technocratic and reactive manner, prioritizing the management of social dissatisfaction over addressing structural issues such as customary land dispossession, environmental degradation, and political marginalization.

Abstract

The industrial growth of the nickel sector has begun to play a significant impact in the current global economy and politics, particularly in the green energy and manufacturing sectors. As the largest nickel reserve holder, Indonesia has implemented a downstreaming policy aimed at increasing added value, attracting foreign investment, and strengthening its global economic position. With China as a significant player as a buyer, investor, and technology provider, the economic interdependence between the two countries remains unbalanced. Using Keohane and Nye's asymmetric interdependence framework, this study highlights sensitivity interdependence and vulnerability interdependence through policy analysis and qualitative data. The findings indicate that China is more sensitive to Indonesia's downstreaming policy, while Indonesia is more vulnerable to China’s investment and technology. These findings demonstrate a mutually beneficial yet unequal relationship in the economic cooperation interdependence between the two countries.

Abstract

The realisation of the food estate is still causing polemics regarding its adverse impacts. The food estate is believed to be a project that will succeed in maintaining national resilience, but it has a negative impact on local communities. Papua was targeted after other areas were believed to have failed, but the government seems confident that the contribution of food estate in Papua can overcome Indonesia's food security problems. This article looks at the extent to which the Food Estate in Papua can contribute to the country being able to fulfil domestic needs from its own production of staple food commodities. The findings indicate that the Food Estate in Papua is not a solution to food‑security challenges. rather, it is an instrument that can make a genuine contribution only if its governance is fundamentally redesigned. The Food Estate in Papua is not the sole alternative for resolving food‑security issues; it is an instrument that can contribute meaningfully only when its governance is re‑engineered. A holistic and sustainable approach is required. Without such an approach, the Food Estate in Papua risks repeating the failures of previous projects, in which large‑scale schemes and short‑term production targets compromised social and environmental stability and the rights of local communities.

Abstract

In recent years, the discourse about the Israel - Palestine conflict has adorned the various taglines on social media. It may elicit various responses and opinions across the global community. This study aims to explore how digital literacy (X1), political literacy(X2), and religious observance (Y) jointly shape boycott behaviour (Z) toward Israeli-associated products within a multidimensional literacy framework. It applies a multivariate quantitative analysis using SEM-PLS model covering the participation from 240 respondents in East Java, Indonesia. The findings of this study confirm that both digital literacy and political literacy exert positive and significant direct effects on boycott behaviour, while religious observance demonstrates a significant negative direct effect on boycott behaviour. However, interestingly, this research also found that religious observance plays a crucial indirect role by significantly mediating the relationships between digital literacy and boycott behaviour, as well as between political literacy and boycott behaviour. Our further analysis reveals that religiosity functions less as a direct behavioural driver and more as a moral interpretive mechanism that channels informational and political awareness into ethically framed consumer actions. The novelty of this research contributes to enriching the literature of consumer activism and sustainable civic engagement.

Abstract

The digitization of elections in Indonesia is often promoted as a way to increase efficiency and transparency. However, some academics question whether this shift truly supports equitable political participation. This study focuses on the Malili Subdistrict and examines how differences in digital access, literacy, and technology use contribute to unequal electoral participation in the 2024 East Luwu Regency Regional Election. The research uses a three-level digital divide framework—which considers access, skills, and usage—and analyzes participation through in-depth interviews with 16 purposively selected informants. The analysis reveals infrastructure disparities between the center and peripheral areas, resulting in a fundamental access gap (first-level). The disparities in digital literacy levels subsequently generate three groups: digital natives/savvy urban, digital natives/savvy with limited access, and digitally marginalized. This results in unequal technological utilization capabilities (second-level). This situation results in three patterns of participation: active digital participation, inert digital participation, and conventional participation that is either exclusive or creates disparities in the benefits or outcomes obtained (third-level). These findings emphasize that the digitization of elections, in the absence of a comprehensive strategy to confront the digital divide, has the potential to exacerbate democratic inequalities in electoral participation and to establish new stratifications that benefit groups with digital privilege.

Abstract

Indonesia-Korea Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IK-CEPA) is a bilateral agreement aimed at strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries. However, its development has exhibited considerable complexity, from the negotiation stage to implementation. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of IK-CEPA on Indonesia’s economic sectors using a descriptive qualitative approach through a literature review method. The analysis employs the theory of international economic cooperation to examine the economic relationship between Indonesia and South Korea, as well as the two-level game theory to explain the dynamics of IK-CEPA, which reflect the interplay between domestic and international factors in the negotiation process. The results indicate that IK-CEPA has experienced fluctuating dynamics across the phases of negotiation, ratification, and implementation. The agreement has contributed to increased investment, export diversification, and economic integration, although it still faces technical challenges and varying levels of readiness among business actors.
