Abstract

This study focuses on the discourse about the meaning of Jihad that emerged in the Muhammadiyah circle as one of the Islamic Organizations in Indonesia. The discussion of meaning of Jihad as a way of peace or a way of war becomes crucial amid radicalism, terrorism, violence movements and chaos waged on behalf of religion. However, Muhammadiyah believes that the meaning of Jihad is anti-war and anti-violence which strengthens the understanding of Islam as the religion of rahmatan lil alamin (a mercy to all creation). This belief is criticism and contra-discourse towards camps that perceive Jihad as war and acts of violence. This study uses Paul Ricoeur's Interpretation Theory and focuses on the interpretation of the text based on the distinction between the text and the reader. The method is Ricoeur's hermeneutic method which focuses on the distortion of language, discourse, and textuality. The study shows that textually the meaning of Jihad among the Muhammadiyah circle is jihad lil-muwajahah, or the struggle to tackle a challenge by creating a superior movement, for example, “Jihad Konstitusi.” Muhammadiyah's understanding of the meaning of Jihad can be used as a counter-discourse on the meaning of Jihad which well known as an act of terrorism.

Abstract

Stunting could have a major bad impact on the quality of Indonesia’s human resources in the future, and startlingly in the North Purwokerto Sub-district, Banyumas Regency, it reached 261 cases in 2019. This study aimed to analyze the communication strategy carried out by the Kasih Jeruk Purut Program on breastfeeding mothers as an effort to prevent stunting in that sub-district. This study used qualitative research methods, and data were drawn by observation, in-depth interviews, and review of documentation. The results showed that this phenomenon was caused by a lack of support from the family, minimum cross-sectoral integrity cooperation, and limited understanding of breastfeeding mothers regarding the concept of breastfeeding management. There was also identified that some of the cadres did not fully understand the concept of effective communication.

Abstract

This discussion aims to see how exploitation has happened towards women through and by the media in the 21st century, which is controlled by the capitalists, and its relationship with the 2nd sila (principle) of Pancasila. This discussion tries to analyze by observing the figure of “cewek kece” (hot chicks) as the ideal female figure in the 21st century on television. The results of the analysis proved that the exploitation of women’s bodies has happened through and by the media, especially television. It is in the form of commodification of “cewek kece”, symbolic violence, and the pressure towards women to have slim bodies. For the results of this analysis, when it is associated with the 2nd sila of Pancasila, it indicates that there is an incompatibility between the exploitation of women’s bodies and the values and teachings of Pancasila as the foundation of national identity. Keywords: cewe kece, exploitation, commodification, the 2nd sila of Pancasila

Abstract

The ‘marketplace of ideas’ metaphor has gone over a whole century since its birth, and its significance is far-reaching. The protection of freedom of speech in its theory is now manifested as high tolerance of fake news. Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Russia, and Malaysia are among the countries attempting to address the worldwide issue of false news. Many nations have included false news regulation into necessary measures such as government management and even legal systems, as can be shown. In the United States, it is difficult to control fake news by legal means, which can only be exerted through extremely limited litigation liability and industry self-discipline. In addition, the transformation of media technology has destroyed the theoretical basis of the ‘marketplace of ideas’. Due to the struggle between the two parties in the United States, fake news has become a ‘floating signifier’ and a discourse tool to attack political opponents. The century-old theory of ‘marketplace of ideas’ is in urgent need of reflection and reconstruction.

Abstract

This paper explores methods in making sure a film can make a statements to its audience, in this case to talk about true problems: local identities and atural resources, through non-realistic subjects: the spirits of the village. It focuses on film collaboration with a Javanese traditional performance group adapting their work to film. The project has both practical and research goals. The practical goal is to collaborate with a traditional performance from a rural area, and help facilitate their exploration of a new medium to express their narrative, aesthetic and cultural messages through film. On the other hand, the research goal of this project is to record, to understand, and to analyze this process, while laying the groundwork for further collaborations and researches in other contexts and with different communities. What so important is the exploration of the adaptation process of performance arts to film, and how the years of collaboration shapes this process and its products. When we look closely at the aesthetics of the films produced, we observed how they represent the group’s and the village’s culture, and the members’ and the villagers’ identities as well as the new set of film aesthetics that emerged from the collaboration.
