Abstract

This study aims to discuss pauses and slips of the tongue in comedian and relation to memorystorage in the prefrontal cortex on the utterance of Indonesian comedian Dustin Tiffani in“Mencoba Mengerti'' on YouTube channel Majelis Lucu Indonesia (MLI). This research is adescriptive qualitative method through descriptions systematically based on the facts of thephenomenon. The data techniques used are listening, note-taking, and documentation techniqueswith stages: (1) listening and analyzing Dustin Tiffani’s videos which was published on Youtube;(2) transcribing as card data in Dustin Tiffani’s videos; (3) classifying the data based on pausesand slips of the tongue theory, and (4) describing the results research on findings and discussion.The study found that disturbances in speaking were in the form of pauses are: (1) filled silences;(2) silent silences, and; (3) combined silences, whereas in the slips of the tongue found in the form of: (1) errors in the semantic selection; (2) mixed words (blends); (3) errors in the assembly, and; (4) errors in syllables. The phenomenons are related to the function of the prefrontal cortex as a memory storage area due to head trauma that has been suffered and affects Dustin Tiffani's speech.Keywords: Dustin Tiffani, pause, slips of the tongue, psycholinguistics, prefrontal cortex

Abstract

Gender cannot be separated from masculinity and femininity. Masculinity which is a symbol ofmasculinity and leads to men is certainly interesting to study because the masculinity thatexists in each individual is certainly different. Masculinity can also occur in literary works asdocuments containing experiences, stories, and life, which are described by fiction charactersas plays in the storyline. This study aims to (1) describe the forms of masculinity and (2)explain the factors that cause masculinity in the main character in Tere Liye's SelamatDatang novel. Assessed by using a qualitative descriptive method. Data source of this researchis the novel and the research data is in the form of story units, sentences or paragraphsrelated to masculinity. Data collection was carried out by reading the novel and referencesobtained through relevant journals and books. Analysis of research data was carried out byclassifying the data, categorizing the data and finding important issues related to therepresentation of masculinity. The results of this study are the discovery of forms ofrepresentation of masculinity in the characters, namely (1) competitive, (2) independent, (3)easy to make decisions, (4) believe in their own abilities, (5) able to take risks. While thefactors causing Sintong's masculinity are (1) cultural factors, (2) social factors, and (3)personal factors. With that, this novel can be a source of reading to find out therepresentation of masculinity that occurs in the novel.Keywords: masculinity, main character, novel “Selamat Tinggal” by Tere Liye

Abstract

Teaching social values in school can possibly be applied in Indonesian language learning usingliterary works, including short stories. Students will be able to gain experiences in terms ofappreciation to particular phenomena in the environment. As the result, they can apply socialvalues obtained from the short stories in daily life. This research aims (1) to analyze the socialvalues contained in the 2019 Selected Short Stories by Kompas; and (2) to investigate itsfeasibility as an alternative learning material for literature studies. This research usesqualitative descriptive methods with a sociological approach to literature. Based on the results,there are various social values found in the 2019 Selected Short Stories by Kompas, such astolerance, dedication, mutual help, kinship, unselfishness, affection, discipline, empathy, justice,teamwork, and democracy. Furthermore, regarding the feasibility of 2019 Selected Short Storiesby Kompas as a learning material for literature studies, it was found through three criteria,including aspect of language, aspect of psychology, and aspect of background culture. Accordingto those three criteria, nine short stories are considered worthwhile to be used as an alternativelearning material for literature studies in junior high school.Keywords: material for literature, short stories, social value

Abstract

The development of feminism in Indonesia began in the time of colonialism when revolutionaryheroines defended the country. Female emancipation began to emerge since the existence ofRaden Ajeng Kartini who was actually a capable woman and could get a higher education.Feminism provides an understanding of the women's point of view itself so as to correct theinequality of non-feminist societies. The discourse of sexuality in the novel “Dr Upadi” uses thepoint of view of ars erotica where sexuality will be seen as an aesthetic element in a literarywork. The type and design used in this study is descriptive-qualitative research. This study takesa radical feminist literary criticism approach where the flow rests on the order of women causedby patriarchy. Radical feminists will give people awareness on the issue of rape and violenceagainst women. The results of the study conducted in the novel “Dr Upadi” by Sujiwo Tejoresulted in the conclusion that there are 18 dictions and phrases of sexuality, each of which playsa role as a woman's attractiveness and the ability of women to dominate, hide feelings, defendwomen's rights in oppression, women's strength to overcome the situation of the superior male,the obstinacy of the female, as well as the debilitating weakening of sexuality.Keywords: literary criticism, radical feminism, sexuality discourse, Sujiwo Tejo's novel "Dr Upadi"

Abstract

This study is to analyzes the type of word formation process of terms in online shops. Thisresearch used descriptive qualitative. The result of the analysis shows four types of wordformation process in online shops, namely derivation, compounding, clipping, and acronym.The derivation is the process of forming words by giving affixes to the word, so results in newword formation causes a change in word-class and its meaning. The examples of suffix are -er,-or, -al, -ment, -ed, –ing in the words “Seller, Buyer, Supplier, Retailer, Counter, Hanger,Customer, Testimonial, Endorsement, Payment, Booked, Trusted, Shipping, Booking,Packaging”. The examples of the prefix is re- in the words “Return, Refund, Restock,Refurbish”. Compounding is the process of forming words by combining two or more classesof words into a new form such as in the words “Handmade, Dropship, Download, Upload,Cashback, Online, Offline, Stockroom, Showroom, Giveaway, Fullset, Checkout”. Clipping is theprocess of forming words by cutting parts of the word itself or forming words from words thathave more than one syllable that gets the word cutting process at the beginning or end such asin the words “Advertisement (Ad), Original (Ori), Brother (Bro), Sister (Sist)”. The acronym isthe process of formation by taking from the initial letter in each syllable arranged to mentionthe abbreviation or extension of a term, so the result can be pronounced as a word. Forexample in the words “COD (Cash on Delivery), PO (Pre Order), DP (Down Payment), FP (FullPayment), PL (Price List), (PM) Private Message, IDR (Indonesian Rupiahs), WTB (Want toBuy), WTS (Want to Sell), WS (WholeSale), ATC (Add to Chart), RC (Recommended Seller).Keywords: word-formation, word-formation process, online shop, terms, morphology

Abstract

Burung Berpagut Emas is a literary work that provides an overview to the reader about theproblem of social inequality. This work represents the social problems that occur, especially inurban and rural communities. This study aims to describe the picture of social inequalitybetween urban and rural communities depicted in the novel. This research is a descriptivequalitative type with a sociological approach to literary works. The data were collected by usingthe look-note technique. The analysis technique used is content analysis. The results of theresearch show that in the novel Burung Berpagut Emas, social inequality between urban andrural communities is described in three aspects, namely economic, social, and power. Inequalitythat occurs has resulted in the emergence of a stigma in society that the village community is atraditional society, low, less competitive, left behind. On the other hand, the stigma in urbancommunities is that they are rich, capital owners, advanced, and modern. It can be concludedthat this work records social realities that occur in Indonesia. This work does not only recordsocial problems that occur in society, but provides critical awareness to readers regarding socialproblems that must be resolved.Keywords: social inequality, sociology of literary works, social stratification

Abstract

The discourse of Friday sermons produced by the preachers is always interesting to study. Thediscourse has a pragmatic power that can influence the congregation to behave and act, bothpositive or negative though. Based on that, this study has two objectives, (1) to find out anddescribe the pattern of realization of language politeness that appears in the Friday sermondiscourse at mosques affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, and Al-Irsyad massorganizations, (2) to reveal the implications between Friday sermon politeness and the characterof Islam which is rahmatan lil 'alamin. This research is descriptive qualitative research using apragmatic theory approach and Geoffrey Leech's language politeness device. The results of thisstudy include (1) the maxim of politeness data used by the preacher in Friday sermon discoursesin three mosques, among others, using the maxims of wisdom, generosity, praise, sympathy,consideration, and agreement. (2) The image of Islam that is Rahmatan Lil Alamin in thisresearch is reflected through polite utterances that are persuasive towards goodness. Thecharacter of Islam Rahmatan Lil Alamin that is found and realized in the polite speech includes,among other things, a fair, moderate attitude, and mutual love for fellow human beings.Keywords: language politeness, sermon discourse, pragmatic, Rahmatan Lil Alamin
