Abstract

Rural is an area dominated by economic activities in agriculture. Ketawang Village is one of the rural areas in Gondang District where most of the residents work as farmers. Farming households have several challenges in trying to meet the consumption needs of their households. Various kinds of household expenditure or consumption needs that need to be allocated both for food consumption and non-food, savings and also household investment together will influence each other according to which priorities must be met first. The objectives of this study are 1) Describing the household characteristics of rice farmers, 2) Analyzing the consumption patterns of rice farmers' ladders in Ketawang Village. Primary data was obtained from interviews of 57 rice farmers who have characteristics, namely farmers who own and cultivate land. The number of samples is determined by 10% of the total population. Data processing and analysis methods with descriptive analysis with tabulation methods and multiple linier regression analysis. The result of this study is that the household consumption of rice farmers in Ketawang Village Gondang District Nganjuk Regency is dominated by expenditure on non-food consumption. Food expenditure was generated at 31.61% and expenditure, consumption, for non-food was 68.39%. This means that almost most rice farmers use their income for non-food consumption.

Abstract

Peanut cultivation by the people of Raddae Village is carried out after the rice harvest, which is the end of the rainy season. This is done in order to maximize the use of rice fields during the rainy season, before the dry season which is also a period of famine. People in the area practice peanut cultivation, but do not know whether the business is profitable or not. People cultivate peanuts to maximize rice fields when the rainy season arrives. The purpose of the research was to analyze economic potential and business feasibility in Raddae Village, Wajo regency. The sampling technique was carried out by simple random sampling so that 15 samples were obtained. The Economic potential analysis is carried out using the income formula, namely TR-TC, while the business feasibility analysis is calculated using the R/C ratio, BEP, PP, and ROI. The results showed that peanut cultivation in this location has economic potential because it can meet all needs during the farming process, while the results of the feasibility analysis also show that the cultivation is feasible or continued.

Abstract

The productivity of rice plants has decreased over the last few years in East Java Province. This needs attention because rice is a staple food. This study aims to measure the efficiency of rice farming in East Java and to determine the effect of access to credit, education, agricultural extension, farmer group membership, age, and government assistance on rice farming efficiency. The data source comes from the Agricultural Survey published by the Central Statistics Agency of East Java Province. Rice farmer households used in this study were 8603 samples. The research method uses Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to measure the technical efficiency of rice farming and tobit regression (two limit tobit) to determine the factors that affect the technical efficiency of rice farming. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the technical efficiency of rice farming in East Java was very low, at 0.267. Meanwhile, the results of the two limit tobit estimation show that the technical efficiency of rice farming in East Java is significantly influenced by the variables of education, age, counseling, and government assistance. The variables of farmer group membership and credit have no significant effect.

Abstract

The concept of rural development is essentially based on communication and participation to achieve a consensus. Rural development is based on rural communities who are willing to be empowered through the order of social capital values. Noeltoko Village is known as a village which has local values and historical values that are maintained in TTU Regency. However, with the development of the times, the social activities that have become traditions and cultures have slowly begun to fade. The problem faced by the people of Noeltoko Village is the decline in social capital including social trusts, social norms, and social networks, which are decreasing caused by the decline in participatory communication traditions. Convergent or centralized communication as the basis of research aimed to improve the tradition of participatory communication into social capital from the empowerment of the people of Noeltoko Village. This research was expected to generate a participatory communication model through the convergence of communication that is able to influence social capital in Noeltoko Village. The research was designed into mix methods research. The purposive technique was used in determining the location. The determination of population and samples using the rule of thumb technique where a sample of less than 1,000 is required to sample a minimum of 30% of the total population, namely 42 samples obtained by 30% of the 164 heads of families. The data collection method consisted of primary data obtained from samples and secondary data obtained from complementary sources such as literature reviews. Data analysis techniques used descriptive statistical analysis as well as inferential statistical analysis using path analysis through Partial Least Square (PLS) software. The results of this study showed that social capital will increase if it was conditioned by the empowerment of convergent communication through indicators of dialogue level, level of interaction, and level of participation.

Abstract

Interventions in the agricultural sector need to be evaluated whether they are really successful and have the expected impact on beneficiaries, such as farmers. However, the definition of impact evaluation has varied considerably in the last two decades. Some empirical studies are also still biased in evaluating the impact, and this is related to the method used. This research has three objectives. First, to review the definition of impact evaluation according to the literature. Second, to identify sources of bias in impact evaluation studies. Third, to review empirical studies on impact evaluation, which have different results, especially from the methodology used. Empirical studies that serve as 'cases' in the agricultural sector are studies on the impact of coffee standards and certification. Thus, this research method is a theoretical literature review supported by empirical research results. The literature review reveals that one of the most common definitions of impact evaluation is that evaluation relates to counterfactual, which is a comparison between what actually happened and what would have happened in the absence of the intervention. Inappropriately designed counterfactuals are a major source of bias in impact evaluation, in addition to validity threats. Based on a review of empirical studies on the impact of coffee standards and certification, it is concluded that some studies have more reliable results than others. Studies with more reliable results use reliable counterfactuals, so as to minimize impact evaluation bias through an ‘apple-to-apple’ comparison between the intervention group and the control group.
