Abstract

The study was aimed to know the ability of fluorescent pseudomonads and nonpathogenic Fusarium for controlling fusarium wilt of banan. The research was conducted both in the laboratory and glass ouse in the Faculty of Agriculture Gadjah Mada University. Laboratorial trial incuded the examining of antagonistic capacity in vitro and the population of these two antagonistic microorganism in compost medium. The examination of the effect of these two microorganisms in compost medium against fusarium wilt of banana Ambon Kuning cultivar was conducted in a glass house. The result showed that there was no antagonistic mechanism occured between fluorescent pseudomonads and nonpathogenic Fusarium. The treatment of compost with fluorescent pseudomonads or/and nonpathogenic Fusarium showed that there were differences on the optimum population of these two antagonistic microorganisms. Fluorescent pseudomonads attained its optimum population one week after inoculation while nonpathogenic Fusarium attained its optimum population two weeks after inoculation. The glass house trial showed taht compost enriched with two microorganisms with one week inocubation time reduced percentage of wilted leaves, although it was nonsignificant with control treatment. Field experiment should be conducted with higher population density of antagonist microorganisms.

Abstract

Bactrocera carambolae was founf on carambola fruit in Yogyakarta Special Province and there were three species of parasitoids, i.e. Fopius arisanus, Agasnaspis sp., and Asobara sp. The population of Agasnaspis sp. and Asobara sp. were very low and was only found in Samas coastal area. F. arisanus was dominant and always found in all observation sites. There was no significant result on their parasitism (for region, F(2,35) = 0.057; p>0.005; for elevation, F(2,35)= 0.704, p>0.05; for habitat, F(2,35)= 0.215, p>0.05). Parasitism of F. arisanus on fruit fly in Yogyakarta Special Province was generally low, i.e. it ranged from 0.5495 ± 0.3843 (in Sleman), to 1.2935 ± 0.8206%. Evaluation of the existence of F. arisanus and augmentation efforts might be needed to improve its ability to parasitize fruit fly in Yogyakarta Special Province.

Abstract

Integrated pest management (IPM) Farmers Field School (FFS) on coffee crop had been conducted in East Java since 1998 until 2003. The IPM-FFS program aimed to increase productivity and quality of the coffee bean through the improvement of the crop and the environment. The aim of this paper was to 1) describe the benefit of the implementation of IPM practicing farmers. The tabulation descriptive method, the profit function and logit function analysis were used. Results showed that the application of IPM technology could increase the profit and the quality of the coffee bean and the price of coffee at farmer level obviously affected the farmer to adopt IPM and increase the income of the farming.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to know the resistance level of beet armyworm Spodoptera exigua to methoxyfenozide. The lara were collected from the shallot production areas in the districts of Nganjuk (East Java), Bantul and Kulonprogo (Yogyakarta Specia Territory) and Brebes (Central JAva). The bioassay used first instars of S. exigua with artificial diets that had been dipped in a series of methoxyfenozide solutions. Larval mortality was recorded at 72 hours after the exposure. The LC50 value of methoxyfenozide for the population from Sanden (Bantul) was the lowest (0.53 ppm) among 16 tested population, therefore it was used as refenrence population to determine the resistance ratio (RR) values of other populations. The RR values of the tested populations varied from 1 to 240,8 times. Population collected from Wanasari (Brebes) was found to have the highest level of resistance of methoxyfenozide as a result of using methoxyfenozide intensively to S. exigua controlling.

Abstract

Bradysia ocellaris Comstock is an important insect pest of oyster mushroom at Bandung. Eggs are oval, 0.44 ± 0.12 mm in length, 0.26 ± 0.08 mm in width, and translucent. Larvae are worm-like, legless, translucent, and capsule distinctive black. Larvae consist four instars. Pupae are obtectate, 2040 ± 0.22 mm in length, and 0.69 ± 0.10 mm in width. Adults are small, females 2.58 ± 0.28 mm and males 2021 ± 0.28 mm in length. Life cycle is 16 -6 26 days. Larvae feed on media, mycelia and fruit bodies.

Abstract

Krepes is an acarina which caused damaged to Auricularia sp. cultivation. The fungi attacked by acarina will be dead and decayed. The host range test were done by inoculating krepes on several edible mushroom and on several stages of cultivated Auricularia sp. The research show that krepes attacks only Auricularia sp., and attack all stages of cultivated Auricularia sp.,

Abstract

Local isolates of Streptomyces spp. were proven could suppress "lincat disease" of tobacco in the field. Six isolates were chosen for partial characterization of their bacteriological properties as based for the next experiments purposes. The results indicated that the isolates produce miselium with spore chains, gram positive, aerob, catalase and oxidase positive. The isolates also hydrolize starch, gelatine and esculine; produce lecithinase enzyme, reduce nitrate to nitrite, do not produce melanine pigment, did not produce hydrogen sulfide. The isolates were sensitive against streptomycine and rifampicin; able to use several carbon and nitrogen sources tested. Capable to grow on several medium pH, from 4,3 to 8,0. The isolates were able to grow from 5° C to 45° C; able to grow on medium containing 4% to 7% NaCl and ion the medium containing 0,1% of phenol. Plant pathogenicity test result showed negative responses which indicated that the used isolates were non plant pathogenic. The ability in suppressing lincat pathogen (Ralstonia solanacearum and Meloidogyne incognita) in vitro was vary between isolates.
