Abstract

Speech act is the action or intent that a speaker accomplishes when uses the language in context, the meaning of which is inferred by listener. It is divided into three classification, those are locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. This thesis explored the speech act in David Cameron’s speech with the purposes to identify contexts underly and which are implied in utterances of the speeh from David Cameron’s speech. The writer used qualitative descriptive method analysis which tried to analyze and to identify every utterance using speech acts. Then the writer will describe the data which will answer two questions in the statement of the problem. Beside that Searle’s theories also used to find some speech act in Cameron’s speech such as representative, commissives, directives, expressive, and declarative. The result of this thesis is there are forty seven illocutionary acts that found in David Cameron’s script of Speech based on Serale theories. It consists of sixteen representatives, nineteen directives, three commissives and nine expressive. To conclude the illocutionary act that found n David Cameron’s speech mostly directives in the context of advice, ordering and question. Keywords: Speech act, David Cameron’s Speech.

Abstract

This research titled is ?The Study of Speech Act on Lucy Maud Montgomery?s Novel Titled Anne of Green Gables?. The purpose of this research is to analyze speech acts and meaning based on Austin terms that found on dialogue on novel story line. Research method is research library and supported by all information on internet. Speech act is a symptom of communication process and according to Austin divided into three categories, locutionary, illocutionary and perlocutionary. The type of speech act that the most used in Anne of Green Gables novel is illocutionary of order. The researcher also analyzing the meaning of speech act from the speaker views and the hearer views and the effect of perlocutionary from each dialogues.Keywords: speech act, Anne of Green Gables, locutionary, iIllocutionary, perlocutionary

Abstract

This research was focused on descriptive research and analyze the relationship between the theme and the characterization of the major character looked from structuralism theory. The objective of this research is to describe the theme, the characterization of the major character, and the relationship between the theme and the characterization of the major character looked from structuralism theory. Data were collected by literature study such as: literature, books, references related to this research. The results of this research showed that the major theme of this novel is art as a mirror, there are some minor themes as add meaning: good vs. evil (physical and deeds), youth, vanity as original sin, mortality, morality and ethics, and friendship. The major character of the novel is Dorian Gray. The analysis of characterization which is used, is a dramatical characterization. The relationship between the theme and the characterization of the major character is very close. Dramatical characterization shows the characterization of the major character through four questions: What the major character done, What the major character said, How the major character faces problem, and How the other character judge the major character.Keywords: theme, characterization, major character, structuralism theory,   dramatic delineation

Abstract

The objects of the analyses are sentences containing implicit meanings in the novel previously mentioned. The sentences with implicit meanings are taken as data, and analyzed using descriptive and qualitative methods. The novels Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows( 2007 ) is written by J. K. Rowling and translated into Indonesian by Listiana Srisanti entitled Harry Potter Dan Rilikui Kematian. The purpose of this research is to study the translation of implicit meanings from the source language into the target language. The results of this research show that an implicit meaning should be explicitly translated if the system of the target  language requires it, on the other hand, an implicit meaning can be explicitly translated if the system of the target language allows it, and the last, an implicit meaning should be explicitly translated if the meaning causes ambiguity or vagueness in the target language.
