Abstract

The blooming of the English usage every time and everywhere may exterminate the use of local languages. It is also supported by the increase of migration out of or into areas of Indonesia that makes people tend to use Indonesian often than local languages. This might be caused by the personal inability to communicate with indigenous people by their native languages. Besides, the cross cultural marriage also results on the difficulties to determine which mother tongue they introduce to their children. In fact, multicultural condition demands people to use Indonesian frequently. This condition shows that Indonesian works greatly because it is national language. In contrast, the interest of using and learning local language may decrease gradually. This study was conducted to find out whether Indonesian EFL learners of Dayakese background have highly concern to their local language. The data were gathered through direct observation, interviews, and questionnaire. The data collected, then, were analyzed rigorously using descriptive statistics. The findings show that most students have low affection towards their local language, even those who are from indigenous people. Local language is less valued than Indonesian, since they are from different ethnic. Indonesian, then, is highly valued for both formal and informal communication, whether or not it is used as language learning instruction. It is recommended that there is a need for the government to encourage the use or learning of local language. Further, the educational language policy makers together with the Art and Tourism Department consider the promoting local language as a language instruction and a subject. Thus, there will be any ways to keep the ethnicity of Indonesia. Keywords: local language, EFL learners, Dayakese, local language endangerment

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the attitudes and awareness of secondary school students in Central Kalimantan towards environmental issues and to propose a framework to raise or improve those attitudes and awareness. The environmental issues covered in this paper are related to forest, bush, and peat land fires. The paper elaborates the secondary school students’ attitudes and awareness obtained from questionnaires which were distributed to 12 Regencies and 1 City in Central Kalimantan. The findings in this paper show that most of the samples of secondary school students have insufficient knowledge about environmental issues and how to overcome the problems. Most of them did not take any action to prevent environmental destruction though they have expectation that their surroundings will be better in the future. Based on the findings, there are practical implications in attempts to minimize the problems which are happening annually in relation to the environment, particularly, peat land fires. There should be learning materials at school that can add to the knowledge of the students towards environment conservation. Schools have a major role to play because students are bound to follow formal education thus it fills the gap between students’ knowledge and environmental problems. Keywords: attitude, awareness, environmental issues, English learning materials

Abstract

Due to the growing environmental destruction, it is becoming necessary for people to start to care about the place they live. One way of doing this is through education by making the students aware of their environmental problems. However, the character education in Indonesia   focuses more on improving the quality within and between individuals, and seems to neglect the characters, which shows relationship with environment. Creating students who are environmentally aware and able to take participation to protect their environment basically helps them to posses good moral values. In short, possessing characters which signifies awareness to environmental problems and ability to protect the environment is as important as possessing desirable characters that can help students to succeed in live. This paper discusses about the characters building within Indonesian context, environmental education, language learning and environmental education, and some proposed models to integrate environmental education into teaching. Keywords: character building, environmental education, models
