Abstract

Not many language teachers use literary works as teaching materials to teach language skills for their students. This is due to teachers’ common perception that literature has a high degree of difficulty to understand. As a result, the use of literary works is often ignored to teach language skills, especially writing. Basically, if teachers are able to select literary works in accordance with the purpose of teaching and use it well, literature can be a bridge to improve language skills, especially the skills of writing an expository text. This article aims to describe the stages of teaching to teach writing skills through mini-fiction for expository essay, tips on choosing fictions that can be used in the classroom, and the problems that may arise from the use of these mini fictions. There are three stages of learning to be conducted when teaching writing skills by using mini fictions, namely the preparatory stage, pre-writing, and writing phases. Using literary works will be able to sharpen the students language skills and their ability to think critically.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to improve the students writing ability for paragraph writing class. The subjects of the study were 37 students of English Education Study Program who joined the paragraph writing class. The design of the study was Classroom Action Research with two cycles. Cycle 1 consisted of three meetings, and cycle 2 consisted of two meetings. The types of explicit planning used in the action research were word listing and word mapping with phrases and sentence for detail.  The instruments used were direct writing test, observation, and  documentation of students’ reflective essay. To score the students’ writing, two raters  were asked to rate the composition by using Jacobs ESL Composition profile scoring rubric. The finding shows that the use of explicit planning was able to improve the students’ paragraph writing performance, indicated with the achievement of the criteria of success. The students’ mean improved from cycle 1 (74.62)  to cycle2 (76.78). Although explicit planning instruction was able to help the students to write better, data from their self-reflection essay showed that many of the students preferred to use free writing instead of explicit planning instruction.

Abstract

Due to the growing environmental destruction, it is becoming necessary for people to start to care about the place they live. One way of doing this is through education by making the students aware of their environmental problems. However, the character education in Indonesia   focuses more on improving the quality within and between individuals, and seems to neglect the characters, which shows relationship with environment. Creating students who are environmentally aware and able to take participation to protect their environment basically helps them to posses good moral values. In short, possessing characters which signifies awareness to environmental problems and ability to protect the environment is as important as possessing desirable characters that can help students to succeed in live. This paper discusses about the characters building within Indonesian context, environmental education, language learning and environmental education, and some proposed models to integrate environmental education into teaching. Keywords: character building, environmental education, models

Abstract

This study aimed at describing the violation of gender ideals of the main female character in Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind in relation to domestic and economic life and describing the possible reasons of why she violated them. The design used was content analysis in qualitative paradigm. Codifications and indicators were established to help to analyze the data. The theories used to analyze the data were the expansionist theory in gender, the Freudian Psychological theory, and the self-actualization theory. The finding shows that Scarlett O’Hara has violated the domestic ideals as a belle, wife, mother, and widow. She also violates the Victorian rules dealing with women and economic life. Scarlett’s violation of the rules in her society is caused by the internal factor and the external factor, the Civil War. It is the emergency, the occasion, and the condition at that time that makes her violate them. Her controversial acts in her society can be considered as a constructive change as it gears to women improvement and equality. The violation of gender ideals of her time does not always mean a negative deviation. It can also bring improvement for a better life.
