Abstract

Gunungkidul, a district in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, is dominated by karst hills and has an average rainfall of 1,881.94 mm/year, making it prone to drought. This study aims to create a drought vulnerability map for the region by scoring and weighting parameters such as rainfall, soil type, land use, slope, and surface temperature. The results show that Gunungkidul has moderate rainfall ranging from 2,100 to 2,385 mm/year, with Mediterranean soils covering 79,254.8 ha (54% of the area), moorland covering 56,229 ha (38%), flat slopes covering 50,037 ha (33.69%), and a homogeneous surface temperature of 26.74°C. The drought hazard index, classified into four classes: safe, somewhat vulnerable, vulnerable, and very vulnerable, indicates that Gunungkidul is generally very vulnerable to geometeorological drought, with rainfall, soil type, and land use being the most influential factors.

Abstract

Zeolite is an adsorbent media capable of adsorbing liquid solutions such as KMnO₄, which acts as an ethylene oxidizer to delay fruit ripening. This study aimed to determine the best adsorbent interaction to delay the ripening of California papaya, examine the influence of zeolite particle size and activation duration, and identify the optimal treatment to maintain fruit quality for up to 10 days of storage. A two-factor Randomized Block Design (RBD) was used, with the first factor being zeolite size (60 mesh and 80 mesh) and the second factor being chemical activation duration (25, 30, and 35 minutes). The results showed that the KMnO₄-zeolite adsorbent effectively delayed papaya ripening, indicated by changes in the fruit and the adsorbent color from purple to brown. Treatment interactions significantly affected fruit texture, total dissolved solids, weight loss, color, and shelf life. The best treatment was obtained with 80 mesh zeolite activated for 25 minutes with KMnO₄, producing fruit with a texture of 49.43 N, total dissolved solids of 10.79°Brix, weight loss of 1.26%, L* color value of 36.58, a* of -10.41, and b* of 31.09.

Abstract

Soil quality is the capacity of the soil to maintain plant productivity and water availability. Most farmers manage their land without considering the existing spatial diversity, resulting in fertilizer waste, decreased profits, and negative impacts on the environment. This problem can be addressed through precision agriculture, which can be applied using geographic information systems to facilitate land management. This study aims to determine the quality and spatial distribution of soil physical properties, namely texture, porosity, and field capacity, in Subak Jaka, Tabanan. The methods used were surveys and laboratory tests to analyze the physical properties of the soil. Sampling was carried out using the gridding method and SyS, resulting in 29 samples that were then mapped using Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW). The quality of Subak Jaka soil physical properties showed clay-textured soil with an average content of 21.06% sand, 31.74% silt, and 45.43% clay, porosity of 59.95%, and field capacity of 39.46%. The spatial distribution of soil physical properties quality in Subak Jaka is dominated by clay fraction with class values of 40.0–55.0%, silt fraction 17.5–35.0%, sand fraction, porosity 60.0–65.0%, and field capacity 40.0–45.0%.

Abstract

Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a widely used parameter for determining plant biomass, including microgreens. Radish microgreens are a type of microgreens that contain vitamins and polyphenols. This study aimed to obtain LAI values of radish microgreens through image processing and to determine LAI characteristics under combinations of indoor irradiation treatments and seed densities. A Randomized Block Design with two factors was employed to determine the effect of indoor irradiation and seed density on LAI characteristics. Lighting treatments included natural light, UV LED, and Pink LED, while seed densities were 10 g/tray, 12 g/tray, and 14 g/tray. Irradiation was carried out on the second day, and images were taken on the tenth day after sowing. LAI characteristics were determined through image acquisition using a camera and image processing with Python, OpenCV library, and Visual Studio Code. Pearson correlation was used to determine the relationship between LAI values and biomass. Results of the Two-Way ANOVA test showed that the interaction between indoor irradiation treatment and seed density had no significant effect on LAI values (P > 0.05), while indoor irradiation treatment had a significant effect (P < 0.05). The highest LAI values were observed under Pink LED irradiation (0.792–0.985) with thick, wide stems covering almost the entire tray area, while the lowest LAI values were observed under UV LED irradiation (0.426–0.528) with small stems and long, narrow leaves. LAI values positively correlated with microgreen dry biomass (R² = 0.84). In summary, Pink LED irradiation produced the highest LAI values, and LAI strongly positively correlates with microgreen dry biomass.

Abstract

Active packaging involves incorporating active compounds or ingredients into packaging films that can affect the packaged product. Potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) is a compound with strong oxidizing properties against ethylene gas produced by climacteric fruits. In the manufacture of bioplastics, gelatinization temperature can affect the physical characteristics of active bioplastic packaging, as this process begins with the swelling of starch granules due to water absorption during heating. This study aimed to determine the effect of KMnO₄ concentration and gelatinization temperature on the physical characteristics of bioplastics and the effectiveness of packaging on avocado fruit quality during a 10-day shelf life. A two-factorial completely randomized design (RBD) was used, with KMnO₄ concentration levels of 10%, 15%, and 20%, and gelatinization temperatures of 70°C and 75°C. The results showed that active bioplastic packaging influenced the effectiveness of absorbing ethylene gas in avocados during 10 days of storage. Interaction between treatments significantly affected tensile strength, elongation, elasticity, water absorption, weight loss, texture, and total dissolved solids. The best treatment for physical characteristics was 10% KMnO₄ and 75°C gelatinization (K1S2), resulting in a tensile strength of 34.43 MPa, elongation of 4.49%, elasticity of 795.88 MPa, and water absorption of 0.71%, which also affected avocado quality during 10-day storage with weight loss of 2.43%, texture of 87.43 N, and total dissolved solids of 4.4 °Brix.
