Abstract

The Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia are composed of small islands scattered from Bali to Timor Island. We analyzed a molecular phylogeny of Adiantum collected from Lesser Sunda Islands to reveal its phylogenetic relationships. A total of 12 species of Adiantum from this region and seven species from Java Island were collected and used in this study. Two cpDNA regions (rbcL and trnL-F) were chosen as markers and phylogenetic analyses were conducted using Neighbour-Joining (NJ) and Maximum Parsimony (MP) methods. The tree topologies reconstructed by NJ and MP from specimens used in this study and other species downloaded from GenBank are congruent in which trees are divided into five major clades. Adiantum species of Lesser Sunda Islands are not monophyletic and comprises three clades, i. e. Clade I composed of A. hispidulum group, Clade III composed of A. peruvianum group and Clade IV or A. caudatum group, each together with extra-Lesser Sunda samples. No sample from Lesser Sunda Islands examined is located in Clade II (A. tenerum group) and V (A. capillus-veneris group).

Abstract

This revision deals with the tribus Bauhinieae(Caesalpiniaceae)as occurring in Malaysia.The tribe includes the genera Bauhinia L. s.str., Bracteolanthus de Wit gen. nov., Gigasiphon Drake del Cast.,Lasiobema (Korth.) Miq., Lysiphyllum (Benth.)de Wit gen. & stat. nov., Phanera Lour.,and Piliostigma Hochst. Bauhinia is reduced to the original Lin-nean delimitation; 9 species are treated (inclusive of a number of varieties) ; 2 species are reduced to the rank of varieties and 3 new varieties are described, accounting for 3 new varietal combinations and 3 new varietal names.Bracteolanthus contains a single species for which a new combination is proposed. Gigasiphon is represented by 3 species; 3 new specific combinations are made.Lasiobema is represented by 5 species; in this ge- nus 1 new species is described, 4 new combinations and 1 new varietal combination are proposed,and a new but insufficiently represented species is recorded.Some new combinations for extra-Malaysian species are also proposed.Of Lysiphyllum 2 species are treated; 2 new combinations and some new combinations for extra-Malaysian species were necessary.Pha-nera is by far the largest genus:44 species,many of which are divided into subspecies and/or varieties.The genus is subdivided into three sub-genera, Phanera,Biporina de Wit, and Austrocercis de Wit.Of these,subgenus Phanera, in its turn, contains 3 sections, all new, viz Pha.nero-siphon, Meganthera, and Micranthera.Subgenus Biporina comprises the 3 new sections Bifoliola, Palmatifolia,and Cinnamomifolia. Subgenus Austrocercis consists of a single species.The recognition of Phanera as a genus, as well as the description of new taxa and the revaluation of some previously described ones made necessary a large number of new names and new combinations.

Abstract

Some 70 years ago Thiselton Dyer showed Dipterocarpaceae from New Guinea to the Linnean Society of London. This event is referred to in the "Journal of Botany"1"Mr Tbiselton Dyer exhibited the Dipterocarpaceae collected by Beccari on his visit to New Guinea in 1872. These were only three in number, an extremely poor result compared with the extraordinary abundance and variety in the forms belonging to this family previously collected by the same botanist in the adjacent island of Borneo, . . The Dipterocarpaceae being, perhaps, the most characteristic family of the IndoMalayan Flora,the poverty of its representation in New Guinea was a conclusive proof that its vegetation was not a markedly Malayan type."

Abstract

Preliminary to a revision of the Myrsinaceae of the British Solomon Islands, we have found it necessary to name and validate the two large undescribed species of Tapeinosperma Hook.f., diagnoses of which are given in this paper, in order that their names may be available for use in connection with studies of the phytogeography of the Solomon Islands.

Abstract

The pollen morphology of 49 species belonging to 48 genera and 31 families ia recorded in this paper. Of these 24 and 19 taxa are studied at generic and species level respectively.Six species are redescribed to show the variations in the local pollen grains. In most of the species studied presently the characters were similar to those recorded previously for the respective families.The variations seen in some of the taxa with regard to wall characters,nature of the apertures,etc. are poninted out.The present observations ace comparatively discussed with reference to previous literature.

Abstract

Barchewitz reached the islet of Leti,in the southwestern Moluccas,on September 2, 1714;he returned to Europe in September 1720, having represented the East India Company on Leti for six years.Like so many of his contemporaries he wrote a book on his lifes adventures.This work appeared in 1730 and proved a success. A second, slightly enlarged, edition followed in 1751,entitled "Neu-vermehrte Ost-Indianische Reise- Beschreibung."Barchewitz is the earliest author on the natural history of Leti and -he paid attention to a number of plants.The present note is mainly a survey of the botany contained in his book.Ernst Christoph Barchewitz was born at the close of the 17th century at Grosz-Sommerda near Erfurt.He was bound apprentice to a tawer at Erfurt but soon preferred to travel ("Wanderschaft") with his brother to Holland.He visited the larger towns,learned at the Hague the art of dressing and the barbers craft,and became the valet de chambre of the Imperial Ambassador,Baron von Heems,whom he accompanied to Austria and the southern Netherlands.He ended his service at Delft Where he enlisted with the East India Company.As a soldier he embarked at Hellevoetsluis on the "Voorburg," sailing April 1, 1711.The treatment on board he judged to be fair; his only objection was that he had to drink water whereas wine would have seemed very suitable.After a stay at Batavia (December 20,1711 till January 29, 1712),he was garrisoned on Banda, where he remained till August 15, 1714. He left when he was appointed Corporal of Leti.The following pertains to the second edition of Barchewitzs book, the pages referred to are cited between brackets.All quotations have been translated.

Based on the differences in their leaf anatomy, it is suggested that S. longispiculatwm, S. biflorum and S. blumei, should be considered as three distinct species.

Abstract

The history of the genus and the arguments for merging it with Aglaia,,areexpounded.The section Lansium of Aglaia is characterized by simple hairs and contains 15 species.Aglaia kinabaluensis, A. intricatoreticulata, A. membrartacea and A. chartacea are new to science.New combinations: Aglaia anamallayana, aquea, breviracemosa, dubia, koster- mansii, pedicellata, sepalina. New names: A. steenisii (base: L. pedicellatum Kosterm.), A. pseudolansium (base: L.cinereum Hiern).The genus Reinwardtiodendron Koorders is merged with Aglaia (sect Lansium);new name: A. reinwardtiana (base R. celebicum Kds.).Excluded are: Lansium decandrum Roxb. and L. hum.ile Hassk., which are referred to Aphanamixis (A. decandra and A. humile, comb, nov.).
