Abstract

RIFAI, M.A. 2008. Endophragmiella bogoriensis Rifai, spec. nov. (Hyphomycetes). Reinwardtia 12 (4): 275 – 276.–– A new species of Endophragmiella is described and illustrated based on a specimen found growing on dead branchlets of Morinda citrifolia in Bogor, West Java, and compared with its closely related congeners thus far known.

Abstract

NISHIDA, S. & VAN DER WERFF, H. Do cuticle characters support the recognition of Alseodaphne, Nothaphoebe and Dehaasia as distinct genera? Reinwardtia 14(1): 53 – 66. ? The Asian members of the Persea group are divided among the genera Alseodaphne, Apollonias, Dehaasia, Machilus, Nothaphoebe and Phoebe. A recent phylogenetic analysis has shown that Machilus and Phoebe are supported as monophyletic genera but evidence that the closely related genera Alseodaphne, Dehaasia and Nothaphoebe are monophyletic or not was equivocal. In this study we analyzed cuticle characters of 95 collections belonging to the Asian members except for Apollonias. We anticipated two possible outcomes. If the genera were not monophyletic, we expected that the groups based on cuticle characters would consist of species belonging to different genera. If the genera were monophyletic, we expected that the groups based on cuticle characters would consist of species belonging to the same genus. We found 16 groups based on cuticles. Of these, 12 consisted of species of a single genus (one group included a single species and thus a single genus).  The four mixed groups included mostly species of one genus with 1 or 2 species of a different genus. Our results support the recognition of Alseodaphne, Dehaasia, Machilus, Nothaphoebe and Phoebe as distinct genera.

Abstract

THE OLDEST SCIENTIFIC NAME FOR THE CINNAMON TREE Cinnamomum zeylanicum BL, 1826, has been currently considered to be the proper name for the common cinnamon tree.This name was already in use during the pre-Linnean period (cf. Kostermans, Bibliogr. Laur. 364.1964).The oldest valid name, however, is Cinnamomum verum J.S. Presl,1825, This is not a pharmaceutical name, as is evident from the references cited by Presl and by the treatment of other species. For complete references cf. Kostermans, Bibl. Laur. 360, 1964.

Abstract

SUNARNO, BAMBANG & OHASHI, HIROSHI. 2002. A new species of Dalbergia (Leguminosae) from Malay Peninsula. Reinwardtia 12(1): 117–119. ? A new species, Dalbergia johoriensis from the Malay Peninsula is described. It is close to D. rostrata and D. havilandii but readily distinguished by the grooved midrib beneath, flowers with narrower standard and wings and style hairy in the lower part.

Abstract

Current generic concepts in Myrtaceae suggest that nearly all Old World taxa originally described in Eugenia L. and Jambosa Adans. should be accommodated within Syzygium P. Br. ex Gaertn. Six new combinations and a new name in Syzygium are proposed. Complete synonymy and typifications are given.

Abstract

The name Machilus was created by Rumphius (Herb. Amboin. 3: 70, 1743). The first post-Linnean description is of Desrousseaux in Lamarck, Encycl. 3:668. 1791, who, however, failed to indicate a type species (a Rumphian species) and as Machilus Rumphius consists of 4 different species belonging to 3 different genera, Machilus Desrousseauxis not acceptable as it is confusing.

Abstract

Seven species are found to occur in Malaysia,only Ae.aspera presumably being native there.Key,synonymy, descriptions,and particulars are given, besides indexes to collections and names.Some twenty or more species of Aeschynomene have been attributed to Malaysia, or "Ind. Or." When the specimens are examined,however, and the synonymy recognized, it appears that the number should be reduced to seven. One species, Ae. aspera, presumably is native to the area; Ae.elaphroxylon and Ae. uniflora are African species; Ae. americana, Ae. elegans, Ae. indica, and Ae. villosa are all believed to be natives of America.The writer is grateful to the curators of the following herbaria for making available the material for this study. The abbreviations of herbarium names used below and in the citation of specimens are those of Lanjouw and Stafleu (Index Herbariorum, 1, ed. 2. 1954).

Abstract

1. Afzelia,Intsia,Pahudia,and Afrafzelia are very close to each other andnot well defined genera. 2. Intsia is a good genus, but the three,other ones are congeneric with eachother. 3. Afzelia Smith is a nomen conservandum and,therefore, must be maintained against Pahudia, generally used in Asiatic and Malaysian floras. 4. An enumeration of all species of Afzelia is given.In this connection some new combinations are made.

Abstract

Description of the pod of the type tree of Ormosia incerta Koord. (reduced to 0. psnangensis Ridl.) from Java. Reduction of the genus Trifidacanthus Merr. (Legum.) to Desmodium; one new combination necessary. The genus Platyspermation Guillaumin described from New Caledonia in Myrtaeeae, suggested to belong to Saxifragaceae-Escallonioidsae. Juncus bufonius L. recorded as introduced on Mt Kinabalu. Two Fimbristylis species recorded new for the Northern Territory, Australia; Oreobolus kukenthalii Steen. recorded from Mt Muln, Sarawak.
