Abstract

This fourth part deals with the family of Boletaceae as currently delimited, with the exclusion of the frankly lamellate groups.The commonly accepted typification of Boletus Fr.by B. edulis Bull, ex Fr. is not that which would be arrived at by strict adherence to the recommendations for the selection of types.It is, however, desirable to find a way of accepting B.edvlis as the type species of Boletus.The correct name for the genus generally called Gyrodon Opat. seems to be Uloporus Quel.

(Begoniaceae), Begonia semongkatensis Girm., is described from Sumbawa Island, Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia. The species belongs to Begonia section Reichenheimia. An illustration, identification key and distribution maps are provided.

Abstract

We studied the floristic composition and structure of the logged-over peat swamp forest in the  PT National Sago Prima of PT Sampoerna Agro Tbk. group for future management of the conservation area that has been  set aside by the company.  In January - February 2012, 25 quadrats of 20 m x 20 m were laid out systematically along a transect,  thus covering a sampled area of 1-ha.  The results showed that the study site was a regenerating and developing secondary peat swamp forests having high plant species richness.  The total number of species recorded was 73 species of 38 families, consisting of 49 species (30 families) of trees (DBH? 10 cm ), 42 species (24 families) of saplings (H > 1.5 m and DBH < 10 cm), and 41 species (27 families) of seedlings and undergrowth.  Tree density was 550 individuals/ha, and total tree basal area was 18.32 m2. The Shannon-Wiener’s Diversity Index for trees was high  (3.05)  Two tree species with the highest Importance Values (IV) were Pandanus atrocarpus (IV= 45.86 %) and Blumeodendron subrotundifolium (22.46  %).  The tree families with the highest IV were Pandanaceae (45.86), Myrtaceae (40.37), and Dipterocarpaceae (39.20). Forest structure dominated by trees with a diameter below 20 cm amounting to 408 trees/ha (74.05%). and  D and E strata with height of less than 20 m, and density of 431 trees/ha (78.36%). Jaccard Similarity index among species, showed  strong association between Pandanus atrocarpus and Blumeodendron subrotundifolium  and based on this association combined  with high IVs, the two parameters of species  characterized the forest, hence the forest could be designated as the Pandanus atrocarpus--Blumeodendron subrotundifolium association. Primary forest species with high economic values were still present in the forest. Eleven species can be included in the IUCN Red List, of which Shorea rugosa is in the category of Critically Endangered), Shorea tesymanniana Endangered and  Gonystylus bancanus vulnerable, hence they should  be protected.

Abstract

The monotypic genus Cullenia was established by Wight (Icones PI. Ind. or. 5 (1) : pi. 1761-62 & text, 1851), who differentiated it from Durio Adans. mainly by the lack of a corolla and the position and shape of the anthers.The only species, originally described as Durio ceylanicus by Gardner, was cited by Wight as Cullenia excelsa Wight. K. Schumann corrected the specific epithet rather casually and atributed it (wrongly)to Wight. Bentham (in Benth. & Hook.,Gen. pi. 1: 212. 1867); Baillon (Hist. pi. 4: 159. 1872), Masters (in Hook, f., Fl. Br. Ind. 1: 350. 1874) and Beccari (Malesia 3: 219. 1889) accepted the genus.Bakhuizen van den Brink (in Bull. Jard. bot. Buitenzorg III, 6: 228.1924) incorporated the genus in Durio.In my opinion Cullenia represents a "good" genus by its lack of corolla.Alston, although accepting Bakhuizens reduction, informed me personally, that he, too, is inclined to consider Cullenia different from Durio.The pollen were described as being naked and pedicellate by Gardner; this wrong statement was corrected by Wight; the anthers are pedicellate and one-celled.In this paper a new Cullenia species is described, which strengthens the position of the genus; both species are restricted to the rain forest region of Ceylon and the Southern Indian Peninsula.

1) Eight species are described: N. altissima, synandra, glabra, koster-mansiana, malayana, parpurascens, piluliflora and strigosa.2) N. kostermansiana is a species new to science.3) N. glabra and synandra, formerly included in N. altissima are reinstated as distinct species.4) The area of distribution of the genus covers Lower Siam, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java and Borneo, with Borneo as centre.

Abstract

This paper contains miscellaneous notes on grasses from Malaysia.One genus,21 species, and 26 varieties are described as new.Many reductions to synonyms are made.Eight specific names are recombined under other generic names and 18 names of varieties, too,are recombined without change of rank.One subspecies and 2 varieties are raised to the rank of species, while 15 species are reduced to the rank of varieties.
