Abstract

The new species Cymbidium intermedium from India is described, and critical morphological and nomentlatural notes on the Asiatic  Cirrho-petabtm putidmn as well as the American Hoff-mannseggella crispilabia and Encyclia fragrana are presented.

Abstract

The author concludes that the generic names for agarics first introduced by Staude (1857) have been validly published.When I drew attention to Staude's forgotten "Die Schwamme Mittel deutschlands" (1857), I felt obliged to conclude that the new generic names for agarics appearing in that work were validly published (Donk, 1949: 319-320), and I still am fully convinced that this conclusion must be upheld. Rogers (1950: 22) submitted that Staude, although referring to Collybia and other genera as G [attungen], did not definitely accept them as genera, since he continued to refer species under them to Agaricus, thereby implying that they were only subgenera or sections; and that Staude, therefore, dit not validly publish these generic names. Rogers's conclusion is untenable for several reasons. If his argument became generally accepted, quite a lot of generic names might be murdered by it: the number of generic names established without simultaneously published new combinations with the new generic name, like those without any mention of species, is considerable. Such an attitude would not only be undesirable from a practical point of view, but would also disregard the declared object of the Code to promote stability of nomenclature. The Code has deliberately and carefully avoided the stipulation that a new generic name requires simultaneously published new combinations; it has even refused to rule that new generic names ought to be associated with binomials, as was stipulated by the former American code! Certainly this was not done solely to accomodate such special cases as, for example, Tournefortian generic names published after 1753 as an overflow from the pre-binomial period: the decision was for general application. Staude emphatically marked the names in question as generic ones; not only in the introductory pages, but also throughout his more detailed treatment of the agarics he preceded these generic names with "G[attung]" and added generic descriptions.He supplied the information that, "the genera to follow are all according to Fries. Abstract

 DE WILDE, W.J.J.O; DUYFEES, B.E.E. & VAN DER HAM, R.W.J.M. 2006. Anangia, a new monotypic genus of Cucurbitaceae from East Moluccas. Reinwardtia 12(3): 219 – 222.– A new monotypic genus of Cucurbitaceae from Morotai (Indonesia) is described. The genus is defined by unique characters, including large sepals, much longer than the petals, and it has distinctly cucurbitoid pollen features. The only species is Anangia macrosepala W.J. de Wilde & Duyfjes.

Abstract

The scope of the monotypic genus Sara.wa.kus is enlarged to enable it to accommodate the newly described species Sarawakus sucoisus Rifai. A complete taxonomic revision of the genus is presented, in which it is shown that Sarawakus belongs to the Hypocreaceae and not to the Xylariaceae as some authors have suggested. Hypocrea gelaiinosa (Tode ex Fr.) Fr. subsp. oligotheea Penz. & Sacc. is accorded specific status as Hypocrea oligotheea (Penz. & Sacc.) Rifai and Phaeocreopsis pezizaeformis Boedijn is transferred to Hypocreopsis.

Abstract

SADILI, A. & KARTAWINATA, K. 2016. A study of the undergrowth vegetation of Sempu Island, East Java, Indonesia. Reinwardtia 15(1): 1 - 9. — A study of forest floor vegetation in coastal forest (site 1) and inland lowland forest (site 2) was carried out at the Sempu Island Nature Reserve, Malang Regency, East Java. The objective of the study is to obtain data on plant species diversity, species composition and structure of the forest floor vegetation. In each site the vegetation was sampled with a plot of 1 m × 50 m, which was divided into 50 subplots of 1 m × 1 m each. Overall from the two plots we recorded 59 species, 57 genera and 39 families. Shannon-Wienner diversity indices (H’) were relatively high. i.e., 4.47 in Plot 1 and 3.2 in Plot 2, with a mean of 3.84. The number of the seedlings of shrubs and trees was greater than that of the herbaceous species. The families having the highest number of species were Euphorbiaceae (6 species) and Fabaceae (5 species). Based on dominant species the vegetation in Plot 1 was designated as Scleria lithosperma-Asystasia nemorum community type, while in Plot 2 Pterospermum javanicum-Knema sp. community type. The similarity index between these community types was only 18%. Only P. javanicum  showed a good regeneration and the regeneration of other species in the two community types was poor, indicating unclear floristic changes in the forest of the Sempu Island.

Abstract

Using the Braun-Blanquet and ordination techniques, nine dry-grass community types were recognized on Oahu,seven of which were dominated by exotic grasses and two by native grasses, Hctcrnpogna eontortus and Erarjrostis variabilis.These community types occured in summer-drought, summer-dry and humid climates.The distribution of certain community types could be correlated directly with rainfall and soil pH. In the summer-drought climate the occurrence of the community types was related to topography,wind exposure, rockiness of the land surface and stoniness of the soil.The nine community types were not related to the established soil series, organic matter content and watsr retaining' capacity of the surface soils.Three distinct soil-water regimes were recognized in five community types: drought, dry and wet types.Seasonal variations in soil-water content were correlated closely with the rainfall pattern.The introduction and spread of exotic species resulted in a gradual disappearance of the native grass communities in the summer-drought zone. In the summer-dry zone, Grevillea robiista. trees and Meliiiis minutiflora grass mats were invading the Rhynchelytrum repens community. Artdropogon virginiciis, introduced in 1932, formed a wide spread herbaceous community in the humid zone. In some places, this community was invaded by Dicranopteris linearis fern mats and trees of Acacia, koa or Metrosideros collina. Fire in both the summer-dry and humid zones maintained and extended the grass communities.

Abstract

Illustrated descriptions of three new Malesian species (Racemobambos ceramica S. Dransfield, Nastus schmutzii S. Dransfield and Cymbopogon minutiflorus S. Dransfield) are presented.R. ceramica is compared with R. schultzei (Pilger) Holttum, and N.schmutzii with N. reholttumianus S. Soenarko. N. reholttumianus, so far found only in the island of Sumba,is recorded also as occurring in Flores. C. minutiflorus is the first representative of the genus in Sulawesi.
